The Act Man: In my personal opinion I thought halo 4's story was pretty good. For me, halo 5 destroyed what they set up in 4. I'm honestly disappointed in the story and art style shift so far in halo 5. I liked halo 4 because I finally got to see the chief awake from a long slumber and getting back into the world of being a badass like we all have waited for in the past, around the days of halo reach. In my opinion halo 4 was pretty good to me. keep up the good work tho Act Man.

I popped in this game after finishing Reach again for the first time like 2 years ago. After beating Reach on Heroic, I tried the first level of Halo 4 on normal, used the same playstyle as I did on Reach, and ran out of ammo so quickly and so frequently that I uninstalled 4. Never touched it again since.

I'd say the biggest problem with Halo 4 is that Del Rio didn't give you a Magnum with barely any ammo and say "I don't keep it loaded son, you'll have to find ammo as you go!"

There are very few instances where naval personnel especially high ranking commanders would need to be armed. Their role is not to engage the enemy personally but to lead the attack utilizing their assets, ie the ships weaponry or deploying the marines for ground operations. The bridge is also located far from most entry points and is well defended by UNSC Marine Corps Fire teams.

I just finished Halo 4 there and I have to say I actually enjoyed it. It was a lot more linear but I did still enjoy the combat and storyline, but Halo CE will always be my all time favourite.

I tried so hard to enjoy it and there were some parts that were pretty good, but a lot of the game mechanics ruined my fun just when things were getting good (whenever I found the perfect weapon combo and got into "the zone", I'd run out of ammo and the only thing around would be a Plasma Pistol or Boltshot, which are kinda only good at close range with certain enemies). Glad you were able to enjoy it though.

Hi. Newcomer to PC gaming and Halo franchise here. Are the weapons and ammo capacity as bad as Act Man makes them out to be? I recently bought Halo: Master chief collection for the first time and I wanna know what to expect from this game.

@@orboakin8074 On normal, I ran out of ammo in almost every fight, which has never happened to me in any halo game on normal. It was a problem for me because I like picking my weapons based on the scenario, but if your more lenient and can make do with whatever weapons are lying around you might not have as much of a problem as I did. But if you ask me, I think its best to play Halo 4 on easy, it should make my ammo situation and my issue with the Promethean Knights less severe. As for how the weapons are in this game, some of them are cool but the ammo capacity does make them less useful. I found most of them ended up being useless compared to the good ol assault rifle or the promethean weapons

@Alex Luca That's awesome man. I agree some of the game's moments were pretty awesome and reminded me of some of my favorite moments from Halo 2. My biggest issues were with the game's mechanics and combat, but I like a few elements of the story, the music (sure not the same beauty as Marty's old soundtracks but the more techno feel piqued my interest), and those badass moments that kept me entertained (even if the mechanics ultimately ruined those moments for me). I admire what this game tried to do and I'm at least glad it kept Halo alive

This means the developers either leave or are forced to make bad games with shorter deadlines. Ubisoft is the biggest example. Even the main developers who made cod4 left. Not gonna lie, the last mission for me had some really solid musical scores. The music when you're in the Broadsword and then the following segment where you are blasting through waves of Prometheans to get to the Didact were made even more amazing due to the musical pieces. It actually made me a little emotional during my Solo Legendary run it was soo good. But I agree that a lot of the rest of the musical set pieces were pretty lack luster.

The Forerunner tech is central to the plot and has a level of mystery to it, but it's ultimately just the set piece for the conflict... where you exclusively fight aliens. I mean, the only characterization we got from the Forerunners before Halo 3 (and even then only in terminals), is that Guilty Spark is an egotistical prick.

Captain Rio should have been more like major Silva from the novel Halo: The Flood. He hated the spartan program in general, yet put chief to work anyway, because he was the best soldier available. Rio could have been respectful of cheif, but after chief consistently goes slightly off mission, which he and Cortina do sometimes, he takes chief off the front of every mission.

Looking back, I now realize that Halo 4 wasn’t supposed to be a ‘forced love story’ but it can be easy to see where people get that idea. If you think about it, the Chief in 4 is accurate to how he should be. He is a child soldier, just like the first cutscene said, he was broken at his core. He was like an abused dog, and Cortana was his therapy. It wasn’t romantic love, it was that to Chief, Cortana was what made him whole. The one that could heal the damage done by the Spartan-II program. To show Chief that he wasn’t just a machine. Looking at the story like this..it hits a lot harder, and has more impact to the player. I know this video is old, but I hope you see this comment and can understand what I’m saying. I’ve been watching your videos for a couple years, and I’ve been able to see things more clearly, and appreciate what makes video games good. Keep up the awesome work, Man of Acting. Now let’s wake when we’re needed, wake up a Sith lord, and lament over Cortana straight into this.

Julio Benavides That’s the book.Bungie always put the games first and a video game is the only medium of art where you can immerse the player as the character that’s why Bungie intentionally left so much to mystery and watch interviews-Chief is a”husk” he is not meant to be this deep emotional character in the games! Leave it in the books..do not merge the two so tightly.Joe Staten wrote books and for the games..he is the brains behind campaign dude. He knows better than you or I. Halo tells its story through the setting,the interactions with the world through gameplay and the other characters more than Chief.Do you understand? That’s why they made Halo:Reach-they book lore second and I know some fans got mad,but that’s how it was and it does make the most sense because first and foremost it is a video game...original is so fluid and feels like a cohesive piece because of its limitations and how close gameplay,story and setting are all tied together. Chief is like Link or any other mostly silent protagonist,it makes you apart of the world to make your own story. My sister and I have backstories in CE to our two Spartans,they weren’t Master Chief ,but two Spartans who are the bumbling idiots and it was fun,we told our own stories and wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

It is the effort of a lot of authors and writers that made halo what it is today. Eric Nylund created a lot of essential things that shaped halo for example insurrecion, odst, blue team, reach, mac guns, orbital defense platforms, admiral cole, harvest and much more. It is ignorant to say that halo is just the work of bungie. Bungie with their lack luster care of the halo canon basically created on of the worst reckonnings in videogame history in which they completely changed the battle of reach that is key in the halo timeline. I think that videogames are very immersive. But saying that it is the only media that is immersive is something ignorant. I bet that you never read a book or watched a movie cause it looks like that.

Halo 4 was the first halo I played and I loved it, and then I played the rest in order. Now I definitely like the older ones but I have a soft spot for halo 4 and can’t really explain why, maybe it’s just nostalgia. Side note as a 10 year old the mission where you talk to the librarian went completely over my head and I have no doubt in my mind that I zoned the hell out.

I think the reason that the chief survived the nuke at the end was because during the fight with the didact, Cortana mentions how the shield around him would easily protect him from the nuke, thus why it needed to be disabled. At the end, she has full control over the didact's ship and protects chief by forming a shield around him using the last of the ship's energy. At least that's how I interpreted it.

I did just beat halo 4 for the first time. I will admit, while the didact story was just weird and confusing to me, I actually did take alot of interest in chief and Cortana's story. I thought it felt weird chief talked so much considering he always was sort of silent. But In my opinion the ending between these two was sweet. I actually full on cried when she said goodbye. It felt like a close friend that we've known for a long time was leaving. Like act man mentioned, in previous entries, cheif having limited dialogue and not having much of a personality, which allowed us to feel like we were cheif. And it felt like Cortana was speaking directly to us, which I think helps us connect with Cortana, making us feel like Cortana really is there with us on this adventure. And I think that makes the goodbye here so much more emotional for me. While halo 4 is different and definitely doesn't top previous entries in the series, the moment with Cortana and cheif is one of my favorites.

Master Chief is wearing Mark VI armor in Halo 3 & 4, only the experimental Mark VII armor had nanobots. It's a lazy excuse that is just as inconsistent as the art style change. So I know this video is old but I finished playing Halo 4 recently for the first time and I will share my experience with it here. I really like how the game looks graphically and I was totally ok with the story. What I didn't like are prothean weapons and prothean enemies in general. The weapons are so bad compared to pretty much anything else the game has to offer and the Didact if that's his name isn't and interesting villain. I won't say anything about multiplayer since I didn't play it because I prefer single player. Also bonus points for Cortana getting thiccer and thiccer every game

Imagine the first meeting with the Didact, he stabs Chief, deeply wounding him, and throws him off a chasm. At this point, time is passing as the Chief fades in and out of consciousness, and we as players see the nanobots 343 talked about stitch his wound and repair some of his armor. This would solve both the armor plot-hole, at least for the Chief himself, and make the Didact a bigger threat. Doing this, on the second encounter, the Didact could have said something like "This time, I'll make sure you're dead."

Didact's problem isn't that he's not threatening enough. It's: 1: You don't even understand who he is unless you read some of the books, get all of the terminals, and manage to pay attention to that entire giant exposition dump. So to most of us he's just typical mustache twirling bad guy who has the force for some reason. 2. There's literally no reason why he doesn't just kill chief multiple times over the course of the game other than "because then the rest of the game wouldn't happen." He shows that he easily can multiple times, he just doesn't do it. 3. He dies at the end, so even if you do all of your homework it doesn't even matter because he won't come up again.

I feel like the real reason for the armor change was that they didn't want to go through the trouble of making two different armor sets for Chief and the Spartan IVs. So if they changed the armor partway through the game, they would've had to remake the Mark Vi anyway. Either way, the whole nanobot story just sounds like something they whipped out their ass to explain an obvious continuity error.

It doesn't mean Chief had cortana in his suit before. This is pretty much proven when cortana says his architecture is similar to the Pillar of Autumn. So CE could be the first time Chief had cortana in his suit, but not the first time he worked with her. This is even more plausible when the first level of halo 2 has cortana on the same station as you, but isn't inside the suit until the end cutscene.

The things that made Halo 1-3 great were *BIG* - cathedral-like alien architecture, open maps, political schisms, galaxy-spanning parasites, saving Earth. Everything after 3 was *small* - squad of ODSTs staying alive, squad of Spartans saving 1 planet, Master Chief's personal issues, "the real enemy is *us*" anti-Chief drama, Sangheli insurrectionists. Half of this isn't as exciting as they think it is because it's literally real life (Middle East conflicts, awful domestic politics, toxic workplace) that many of us escape from in the first place. But what else can they do after the big story was "solved" in 2/3? Human-Covenant War? Over. Forerunners? Dead or washed up. Flood? Eradicated or contained. To make Halo 4 as fresh and exciting as its predecessors, they needed either a new enemy faction (think Star Wars NJO Yuuzhan Vong) or a new timeline. That terminal stuff could have been expanded into a whole Forerunner trilogy. You know, play as humans vs Flood, humans/San'Shyuum vs Forerunners, Forerunners vs flood, political conflict (diplomatic_mission vs cleanse_the_planet, Shield_Worlds vs Halos_Go_Brrt).

After recent gameplay of Halo 4, you don’t always have to shoot from range to kill them. Some other weapons, even the suppressor (ONLY if you’re super close to the Knights and manage to miraculously kill them before they one-hit you), excluding the boltshot, are actually really helpful against the Knights. Also, when they teleport, look at the blue orb sucking it towards it. It tells you the direction to where it will teleport to. If the orb is to the right of the Knight, it will teleport to the right, etc. As for that ridiculous charge-teleportation tactic they use after you take out their shields, if you time it right, you can dodge that attack and use your auto-weapon to finish it off before it teleports back to its previous position. However, those are possibly the only tactics you can use and I do agree that it does ruin the gameplay when facing against the Prometheans in the campaign. But at least they’re certainly much easier to tolerate than the ones on Spartan Ops, especially on Legendary. The Knights teleport away from you every single time they are hit! you know, i remember hating halo 4 on release, but having just played through it again to catch up before infinite....I actually found myself really enjoying it. I liked seeing more of their relationship and seeing cheif as more of a human was nice.

I quite enjoyed Halo 4 in its entirety. I'm not saying it was the best game in the series to that point as I still often went to Reach for a good session of PvP. However, as far as gameplay is concerned I could just zone out for a little while and relax while playing this campaign. Also, as far as the ammo issue is concerned I'd usually find enough to keep me going with my favourite weapons like the DMR or SAW when it appeared.

Personally, I'd take the Chief from CE any day. He might not have internal conflict, but he's a soldier trained from birth. He is very well focused on what he's supposed to do. That said... when the stakes are momentarily low he has his quirks. In the Maw, instead of piloting his Banshee with impeccable skill and landing it in the most soldierly way possible, he uses his unmatched skills to perfectly imitate a failing banshee to troll Cortana. In Keyes, once Cortana goes motormouth about how the Forerunner tech works, instead of staying quiet or voicing his disapproval professionally, he bonks his own helmet. 2 and 3 have their moments as well, even if they are less outspoken. The point is, Chief has personality and human traits, but when the stakes are high (which is most of the time) his personality gets filtered through soldier mode, leaving the personality for when nothing is really happening at the moment. You can tell that the Chief in the first 3 games has more going on under the hood, you just don't get to see it.

@@notalive5479 yeah for sure, there's no doubt the first 3 games are better. I just think Halo 4's story is better than i originally gave it credit for. The only one i really dislike is halo 5. not a gigantic fan of infinites either if im being honest but its miles better than 5. My all time favorite will always be halo 2, and the remaster is damn near movie quality it looks so good.

I just started playing through it again and immediately remembered all the reasons I didn't enjoy it on release when I played it on the 360. Many of the reasons mentioned in this video particularly with level design, art design, and the awful weapons sandbox.

I don’t like how they portrayed Spartans in halo 4, Spartan Ops made them feel like teenagers with superpowers cause of their personality. I can understand the Spartan 4s being more human than the others, since they are adult volunteers compared to previous generations being taken as children and indoctrinated. In fact, some Spartan 4s have even gone rogue or turned against the UNSC in the books because of their lack of conditioning.

When Palmer comments on Chief's height it was just meant as a friendly jab. Just as his legend grew i'm sure people would exaggerate his feats or his description. But you also notice that when Chief first meets Palmer he is only barely taller than her but in the final cutscene he just towers over her as he walks past her in the armor bay. That's because he's lived up to the legends and as such, everyone around him sees him as that towering, hulking, mythical being. I do think the story does add a lot of character to Master Chief, and it's much needed. The final line he says fucking destroyed my feels. Seeing just a part of his face shows you how war torn and tired he is, but still has the killer look in his eyes. All in all, i think the story was a great look into Chief. Sure the transition could be better but at least it isn't like Halo 5 where it isn't just poopy doo doo.

Great video! The Act Man one of three content creators I follow, and this video is a good example of why. To contribute my two cents, the biggest problem I had with Halo 4 is in the cut scene with The Librarian. She basically states that the Master Chief's existence and everything he's done was predestined to happen, making the effort the player has put into previous games feel worthless in terms of the story. Also, replayablity is killed with the twist halfway through the game that you've been unknowingly helping the villain.

its ok. i know u said u don't read the books and to be honest, the game halo reach kind've made everyone who did scratch their heads and wonder if bungie retconned their own established canon for that event since at the time, we were not only told that cortana had been with chief for AWHILE, but he and the pillar of Autumn were in SPACE above the planet during the fight for Reach. Stuff external to both the book and the game were used to explain the new addition to the timeline ( i think it was halsey's journal that u only get if u bought the special edition of reach)

Halo 3's amazing plot twist was that humans descended from the Forerunners. Halo 4 retconned the lore, making them different. I never did like that change to the canon.

I didn't really analyze the game while I was playing - very new to Halo in general - but the stuff you're talking about in gameplay prioritization and playstyle is something I just naturally gravitated to. I was always annoyed whenever I didn't have long-range weapons like the LightRifle and I pretty much avoided every shotgun weapon in the game. I did a lot better. I did use some rapid fire weapons that also worked fairly well at longer-ranges. I generally felt like the only difference between the Covenant and the Prometheans was that the bigger enemies were more spongey. I agree with the lack ammo too.

I agree with you on a lot of points. The enemies and weapons you use to defeat them. I remember using a lot more ranged weapons when I played through it. Laskey was one of if not the only NPC I really liked other than Cortana. I've been playing through a modded version of Halo CE and I find myself utilizing more strategic fighting positions and figuring out which weapon is best for the job. I would have preferred if they left that cool ghost run for later but I did really enjoy one of the last couple levels where you fly through the ship. Whenever I talk about Halo 4 I always refer to that as the Death Star Trench run since it made me feel like I was Luke piloting his X-Wing to take down the Death Star. Most of the music I can't really remember except one song that just kept ampping up on one of the last few levels and it made me feel really BA. Overall I did enjoy Halo 4; however, compared to the original trilogy, I prefer Halo 1-3 over this one.

I'm new to the Halo franchise, but I'm really interested in an upcoming game. I decided to finish whole story by playing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and get to the 6 with understanding the plot before. My experience was awesome, first 4 games I played in the MCC and I think 4 wast great too! Yes, it kinda went sideways in a lot of ways but it was still as fun as previous games to play. In some ways its a step back, but there are steps forward in some areas. The graphics are beautiful, weapons feel great to an extent, new enemies are interesting, etc. You can also now run, which I really wanted in previous 3 games. Playing 5 now, I'm a little overwhelmed by additional mechanics like side boost, sprint -> hit, teammates management etc. The game's for sure not what it was used to be for better or worse. And let's be frank, it couldn't stay the way it was after all this time. You gotta appreciate that it's still fun to play. I think 6 will be a bomb. I love open world games, not a lot of good shooters with it. My expectations are definetely high. Can't even imagine how great fans expectations are.

I had a thought for how the chief could get his new armor. The game could start with his old stuff, and as it progresses it becomes damaged and destroyed, so when he gets to the infinity they give him the new suit. Sorta like how you said about the game starting normal then cortana acts up

same. the gameplay feels like reach but with less ammo (act man is exaggerating the hide behind cover and pick off enemies), the level design is actually pretty good, it just has too many linear parts, and it has a great story. only problems are the art style, ammo, and knights. most of the points he brings up can be compared to halo 2, which he still gave an "awesome" rating. knights are also nowhere near as spongy as people say they are (seriously people sleep on the halo 1 red elites, once you see one of those mfs the game turns into a cover shooter)

19:53 Actually, that is chief. Chief met Cortana before the events of Halo. In the old canon, he was given Cortana to infiltrate a covenant ship, then infiltrate high charity, kidnap a prophet, and force a peace treaty that way. However, reach was attacked and the mission was put on hold. On his way back, he lost his teammate James (due to jet-pack explosion) and linda due to plasma bursts. This is still canon with some exceptions. Firstly, the so given to 117 was a fragment, one half went to chief, while the other stayed with Halsey. In halo CEA, there is a Cryotube with Linda-(insert spartan number) on the control panel, meaning that the mission still happened, got interrupted, and Linda was critically wounded. This also means that he had Cortana to help infiltrate the ship. It also lines up because Cortana CHOSE chief, it wasn’t just right place right time where Cortana was on the same ship as chief that was being attacked

99% of Classic Halo fans (myself included obviously) didn't decide to hate Halo 4 because it was made by a new company. We were just as excited as everyone else was to contibue the master chief story. Kill bad guys, listen to a badass soundtrack, save the universe, create fun custom games, enjoy multiplayer, and everything that goes with it. Problem was after playing the campaign, most of us became dissapointed realizing THIS is the direction they want to take Halo. Nothing about Halo 4 felt like the other Halo games. We quickly realized that 343 industries gave up on the bungie fans before even giving them a chance and just decided to replace them with a new audience who would like their kind of storytelling. And their storytelling and gameplay mechanics is an absolute 180° from the rest. Why would I wanna play a game that feels nothing like the rest?
