I'll never get over how traumatized I am from trying to beat the Prophet of Regret on Legendary. Unlimited honor guards that would just melt you instantly. If there was just one that you missed that was left when you dismounted Regret, you were insta-dead and had to start that whole fight over. *Shudders* I understand why they didn't, but damn. It would've been really interesting to see a time limit on the Tartarus boss fight. (Though, that probably would've been an even further bitch on Legendary. LMAO)

I agree. Idk if bullet(or laser) sponge moments really count as boss battles. In my opinion, a boss battle should be something with a unique combat mechanic that forces the player to engage the enemy in a way that they'd otherwise not be compelled to. Attack timing, weak points, phases, etc. I'd say the scarabs and even perhaps the hunters are Halo's most memorable boss battle. All in all, I love Halo but the 'boss battles' have always been pretty weak.

I also just realized you missed a boss fight too! There is the one at the end of Halo Reach with the Field Marshall right after his Zealot squad kills Emile. I thought the Warden was fine as a bossfight (bad damage feedback is a good point), but the repetitiveness of him killed the fun. I hope to see some sort of forerunner arena pop up in the world that the banished brutes are using as a fighting and hunting spot (seeing as they will normally pit different species to fight to the death) and Escharum is in the arena and is fighting other brutes when you walk in, he looks at you and is like "finally the day has come, fight me!" as all of the other brutes and jackals and grunts gather around the arena and cheer for Escharum. then the halo theme plays as Escharum pulls out the blades on his shoulders and you starts to fight him. once you have killed him you can take the two blades that he had and kill the rest of the brutes, jackals, and grunts and keep the blades as a trophy or weapon to keep on you.

The best and most underrated way of implementing boss fights was actually a thing Halo 3 implemented in its scoring system for the campaign and the way enemies had different ranks. My favorite implementation of it is on the first mission, after fighting through the jackal snipers. The brute chieftain hanging on to the side of a phantom to your right as you come out of the forest flies away, often before you're able to kill him. This scenario was so entertaining and so much fun to play because it made the player feel more involved in the game, feeling they they were going out of their way to remove an important unit of leadership from the covenant military. Experiencing that for the first time you might be forgiven for thinking you're hunting large game for future benefit. Even if that wasn't what a player used to immerse themself in the game, seeing such a high ranking enemy decide to retreat and abandon his men upon your arrival made the player feel like a serious threat immersed in a persistent world with real characters making their own decisions where all parties involved are strategizing somehow; sort of like the Shadow of Mordor games, a game I found unplayable due to design decisions, even though it came long before. You could catch a player saying about the brute chieftain you could shoot off the phantom, "Oh I'll get them later" or "That's the chieftain on the bridge later" even though it was a scripted event. What Halo 3 has feels like a more successful implementation of what Shadow of Mordor was going for (relative to their scope in the respective game meaning to say that Halo 3 not really trying to do that and doing a fantastic job is a better example than Shadow of Mordor investing all of its design to achieve something like that and doing an awful job). If Halo: Infinite can fit some, "Get them before they run so they stop sending waves of things attacking you" in there I think everyone would benefit.

Personally, when it comes to boss fights, and especially those in the Souls series, one of my favorites and one I consider to be a perfect combination of themes and gameplay is the Soul of Cinder. Thematically, it's the culmination of every soul who kindled the flames before you from Gwyn to the former player characters from the other games. You can see it in the gameplay as well in the way the Soul of Cinder switches between all the different playstyles the player is able to choose and the way the music weaves in Gwyn's them in the second phase... Mwah. Chef's kiss. Keep up the awesome videos man.

I honestly don’t understand the distinction between Regret, Guilty Spark, and The Didact. For regret you just jump at him, hit a button, and mash melee. For Guilty Spark, you just point a Spartan laser at him and hold the button waiting for it to charge. For the Didact, you just follow the prompts on screen. They’re all basically interactive cutscenes.

For bosses, my favorite has to be Vergil from Devil May Cry, more so the battles from 3. You have this clearly defined sense of character progression on Dante to the point that you feel OP, bu then comes Vergil and still makes you wish you could be using him instead. I'm not going to go deeper into the character but, just know that beating Vergil 3 also gives you a GREAT feeling of accomplishment.

Agreed on MGS bossfights. They are just something else. Thinking outside the box. I'd like to add "The Sorrow" from MGS 3. Even though it's not a "bossfight", it was really interesting and exciting when I played it through first time. Trying to understand it for hours and then the answer was really simple. One of the best memories from the game. Later when you learn the depth in that part, the ghosts of the people you've just killed and all. Halo and MGS is love.

Slave Knight Gael is such a good boss not only for his mechanics but also the lore, He search through the entire Lothric kingdom until you found either him on the chapel or the painting he left, then helps you taking Down Sister Friede & Father Ariandel to lit the flame of that painted world and also save the painter, Then guides you through the ash city & then helps you along side Patches Against the demon prince boss fight and latter on the ringed city you fight him making such a good character that failed his mission of bringing the dark soul to the painter. It’s basically a fight of two undeads on a ashen desert with such a good memorable soundtrack.
