The vents are supposed to help prevent a tension pneumothorax from blood and or pressure building up in the chest cavity and preventing the lungs from being able to expand, if I understand correctly.

I am researching what trauma kits to buy and the products to carry in the bag. I'll definitely add some chest seals to my emergency bag. With all the mass shootings going on it would be good for everyone to carry a trauma kit. I've been watching videos on how these work. Chances are that in the event you're in the location of a shooting that someone there could be a nurse or a doctor that could also use the things in your kit to save someone's life. My husband is a retired police lieutenant and has some basic life saving skills. Not that of a paramedic but I do know he has saved people's lives on scenes. Could you do a video of what a lay person could put together to keep in their vehicle just in case they are ever in a mass shooting and need to render assistance while waiting for police and EMS...thank you for your videos.

Another reason to put a vented chest seal on the front of a patient laying down would be the potential for no exit wound on the back. Otherwise there’d be no venting. I still love me some decompression needles though, so I ain’t trippin.

+SkinnyMedic What is your opinion on using a vented chest seal on an entrance wound and an occlusive chest seal on an exit wound because it’s typically larger? Or just your thoughts on the vented/occlusive seals combo in general?

So what's the point of the chest seal if blood pours out the vents? Sorry, I'm very ignorant.
@cullenmayes33705 жыл бұрын
The purpose of a chest seal isn't to keep blood in, it's to keep air out. Check out this Skinny Medic video on pneumothorax: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKq0hXeZibCDmMU
@HockeyGuy_in_STL5 жыл бұрын
During exhalation, air and blood are allowed to escape through the vent which decompresses the thoracic cavity. During inhalation, the device occludes the hole so that a pneumothorax or hemothorax doesn't develop into a tension pneumothorax which could become life-threatening. This is a temporizing measure only!

If you encountered a particularly hairy person (body hair lol) that had a sucking chest wound would it be advisable to attempt to shave around the area before applying the seal, or would that even be an issue?
@mamneo22 жыл бұрын
In the Fire Dept we had Gilletes as part of the regular kit, mainly for EAD use. I think that if the patient is way too hairy and is bleeding the seal may not work properly.

Great video I’m just starting to learn about this and I have a question. Why would you want to put a vented seal on a chest wound? It looks like it just keeps bleeding in bleeding. How come you don’t put a non-vented chess seal so there’s no blood coming out?
@JohnRambo-dr7rd6 ай бұрын
Because you need the air to go out of the lungs while the wound is protected for any infection

@Guccigang-ny4fd5 жыл бұрын
what are the holes for in the vented chest seal?

It's supposed to work like a one way check valve for any air exiting your lung. Allowing it to escape but not allowing the patient to inhale through their new chest hole.

@snafu6735 жыл бұрын
what did you mean by "burped".
@SkinnyMedic5 жыл бұрын
You pull the seal back and let the air / blood release from the chest cavity. Some times vented chest seals can get clogged so you can pull them back off the chest to release pressure.
@snafu6735 жыл бұрын
@@SkinnyMedic I see, so after the vents are no longer venting you burp the seal!
@SkinnyMedic5 жыл бұрын
Your patient may get short of breath and or decreased lung sounds so when you pull the clogged seal off they will get relief. But hopefully the seal doesn't get clogged and you don't have to worry about it.
@Dude177685 жыл бұрын
Why would you want it to vent blood? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of being a seal?
@crunch98764 жыл бұрын
SigBoy 1911 I’ve been looking for the answer to this for a while. He never seems to address it. But u think I figured it out. It’s to let air and blood out to relieve pressure but not back in. When you breathe out it vents. When you breath in it closes I think.
@BmoCareful525 жыл бұрын
I think I remember you saying that emt and ambulances use some sort of gauze packaging as chest seals? Am I remembering that correctly, and if so what was it?
@robertscott22105 жыл бұрын
BmoCareful52 That's the old school way we used to do it before they invented these fancy specific seals. It's Vaseline gauze. It comes wrapped in a foil package. You open the package, throw away the gauze and tape the foil over the wound.
