It's worth checking those open circuit smd resistors out of circuit under a microscope with a multimeter sometimes it just the solder that does not stick properly on the top ends of the resistor because the pads get missed somehow

The black thing marked 102 is a 1 mH inductor there as an EMI countermeasure. There is no need for a thermistor because there is no bulk capacitor after the rectifier to charge hence no issue with high transient current.

Great video Richard, nice testing the board with through hole components. At first I thought you may leave them, but at the end you stated replacing them with proper smd components. Nice! Customer should be happy. Paul, USA!!!

Yeah and this is from the building company that make homes for millionaires. It's good to keep them happy and they will pay a decent price for the repair too. This is the client if anyone interested to see what they do : domusrenova.com/

excellent Richard! Hello from Tenerife today. I can see your island but it's a long swim... :-)

It' a funny thing that. You can always see Gran Canaria from Tenerife but you can only sometimes see Tenerife from Gran Canaria. What I have noticed though is the ferry from Agaete sails even when Tenerife is not there 😵‍💫

Very good job Richard. Only extra thing might be worth doing is having a look for any unusual hot-spots with your IR camera. I do it out of habit these days especially if there may have been collateral damage (that said you were very thorough so unlikely to spot anything). Keep up the great work 😀👍

Using hot tweezers is easier than using a soldering iron, then struggles to solder the smd mosfet which then doesn't look properly soldered! I'm confused.

What topics would you suggest someone study to get a theoretical foundation to learn circuit repair? To get in to repair work, do you normally do an apprenticeship?

I could not tell if there is room on the top of the PCB, but if you have a small drill, you could drill holes next to the pads of the SMD and use the TH resistors poked through from the top, in a vertical orientation (one leg folded down the side). Just a thought if a quick repair is needed?
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair Ай бұрын
As I don't have the adapter that fits between the PCB and the lamp I have no idea unfortunately but yeah that could work if needed
@Tims_Projects
@Tims_Projects Ай бұрын
@@LearnElectronicsRepair haha, sorry I was not clear, I meant if there was nothing obstructing the other side of the PCB, (like other TH components) drilling holes would allow you to mount the Trough Hole Resistors the way TH Resistors are normally fitted? if the hole was next to the pad, as the wire poked through, a good blob of solder would fix it in position. Having the resistors on the top side of the PCB would mean the PCB would sit down into the plastic case you have?

Do you have any theories about what the initial fault was that caused this damage?

Question: I try to find a video were the amplifier consisted out of a large module with 15 or so pins from a couple of weeks ago. What was the name of that video? I remember that you used the datasheet extensively. Cheers!

Richard reviewed them in an earlier video:- kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYGUkJmNma50pMU Richard's discount code didn't work for me, but AliExpess are doing their own Black Friday discount codes. I got £10 off my order using one. I'm in UK.

Sorry but that proves nothing, you can't just flick the switch wait for a second and switch it off FFS ! Get the parts and put it back together test for excessive current draw and temperature etc. Seriously it looked weird, you flicked it on and looked bloody relieved to switch it off less than a second later ! " 123 and it works"
@LearnElectronicsRepair

I was testing it with bodged on PTH resistors. I just wanted to know if it actually worked as I need to order the correct SMD ones. I think the test was perfectly valid to be honest Andy
@andymouse
@andymouse Ай бұрын
@@LearnElectronicsRepair I guess so but flicking it on then straight off again isn't a good look, but I am sure that when the correct components are fitted you will soak it for half an hour or so ! and if it should fail then you will revisit it for us. It reminded me of an old boss off mine would say "does it work?" before I could reply he said "Fuck it ship it !"

It was a proof of function not a repair 😉 I think this was a perfectly valid decision but hey ho we all have our own methods and that's perfectly OK as long as it works for us.

Umm, yeah. He should have ordered the SMD parts, waited, installed them and then found out it still didn't work. lol Nothing wrong with substituting parts to prove it out BEFORE wasting time ordering the correctly sized (SMD) components, exactly like he did here. Now you know it works, order the parts, install and good to go.
