I have the 5 inch Haloview. Started with the 7 inch but returned it because it was just too large and took up too much dashboard real estate. There is an repeater antenna for the Haloviews that works great for RV's greater than about 30 feet. I have a 40 foot RV and it really helped in solving the stutter and frame rate issues.

Hey y'all! We just bought our first Airstream last week & are so excited to get on the road. It's a 1989 Excella 1000, 29 ft and has been renovated so only a few minor things need to be done. One of the things on our list is a backup camera. This video came in just in time! Thanks! Lori & Scott Cosper, Rome, GA

Good information, thanks for sharing. We installed the Furrion Vision S on our trailer, mostly because it was "plug and play" for our trailer model. We mounted the camera where the middle light in the top back of the trailer, no drilling required! It works well but I don't have an aluminum shell between the truck and camera which has to cut some of the range/performance. We just bought our trailer in April of this year and I had the camera in place in June, it really bothered me not being able to see back there, I can't imagine putting on as many miles as you have without one, but has worked well for you. Thanks for your videos, can't wait to get to Yellowstone in our trailer!!

So glad our Lance came with such, but we ordered it that way. Would NEVER want to tow without a rear view look at traffic and where I am backing into.

We’re fortunate to have a rear window in our trailer, so I was able to mount a wired camera inside to avoid drilling holes in the camper. I ran the wire to the cab of our truck by installing a 1/2” pvc pipe under the trailer wire tied to the propane line that fortunately ran from the tank mounts in front straight back to the rear bumper. Our system is designed to couple around the hitch, so it’s easy to connect when we couple the trailer wiring to the truck. The only exposed area for the wire is where I draped it out the rear window down to the pvc pipe. I use several short pieces to clear packing tape to adhere the cable to the outside back wall. We leave the backup camera on when we travel, because I agree with the premise of your video, but I also agree with some other commenters here that the lag time is a no go for me. With our installation I can see what is behind us and who’s passing in real time. That is really important to me when changing lanes. I want to know that I have room to make a change and any lag time could be hazardous. IMHO, this wireless system fails the reliability test.

I added a two camera system to my rig. To get rid of the delay I installed the antenna extension and magnetic antenna on my camper camera. It worked like a charm. To attach the magnetic antenna base to my rubber roof, I used the rubber roof patching tape. It didn't move in 8,500 miles. I used the power from the center clearance light to power the camera. The other camera is on the truck. The whole system was less expensive than a manufacturer installed system.

We have a 34' travel trailer and it works fine at that distance. The lag depends on the signal quality, but there is always a small delay. I always mute ours while driving. The UI is pretty clunky but you will memorize the buttons you need to press to mute and unmute.

I have a different brand on the back of my 19 ft Airstream. As a solo traveller I love it, both for when I’m backing up and using it as a rear view mirror. I found no convenient spot to mount the suction cup inside my truck. As well, I found that it didn’t hold very well. So, what I did was use Velcro strips to wrap around the monitor on either side and use another to brace the two straps together in the back in order to mount it directly to my rear view mirror. It’s easy to take off when I’m not towing the trailer.

I have the Garmin BC-30 camera mounted INSIDE the rear window, under the cabinet. The GPS is the monitor. The resolution is much the same as yours, sort of clumpy. The lag is relative to speed, so on the highway I'm guessing the camera shows about 4 frames or 15' later. When backing into a spot you're going so slow, a few frames is not noticeable. But the poor resolution makes a shadow look like a rock, or worse, a rock looks like a shadow. I still get out a lot. I'm so pleased you picked this topic because I get to compare mine to others. If you put the monitor close to the camera does the resolution improve?

@jayh.51005 жыл бұрын
What you might want to do, is buy a short coax cable, with the proper connectors. I didn't get a good look but they sort of look like SMA connectors. You can mount the antenna to the rear window of the trailer, which will greatly improve the signal strength, as RF will make it through glass. Be sure to orient the antennas the same way so the signal polarization at both ends is the same (vertical, or horizontal). If they're 90 degrees out of phase, you will decrease the signal strength by 20dB.
@roneddington75645 жыл бұрын
The antennas are recommended to be in the vertical position, not the horizontal position like your monitor antenna. I just bought the long range version that comes with an amplifier and 12 meters of cable. I will be installing it on the back of my enclosed car trailer that I pull behind my 33 foot Class A. The antenna will be installed on the front of the trailer at the height of the motorhome's back window. I am hoping not to have any of the lag that you are experiencing.

Thanks for this info as I am currently looking for a backup/monitor camera for 40ft fifth wheel. I found that if I run a extension wire for the antenna and relocate it to the front of the trailer the reception improves tremendously (skips and lags dissapear). In fact I have the Haloview MC7101 with 4 cameras and all now work perfectly. I used Ellen Tool 5M Antenna WiFi RP-SMA Female to Male Extension (B01CL4T08K) $5.94 along with FPV Antenna Adapter (B071SK74HN) $5.95. PS I have mounted one camera on each side of RV and one on the back. I use the fourth camera as an as needed camera. I am very happy with the purchase.

I'm glad to hear that you have enjoyed your camera! We may add an extension and try to mount the antenna near the front end on the roof. We really don't want to drill a hole in the Airstream aluminum (mainly because of potential leaks), but there may be an existing hole that would work for this purpose. However, in its current set up, it seems to work pretty well with only the occasional lag.
@kristymichael5 жыл бұрын
@DeputyStryker, I think mounting it inside the camper (even near the front) would not work because of the Aluminum skin. We have trouble getting wifi and cell signals inside the camper, so I'm pretty sure the antenna for this camera would have trouble too. I love our Airstream, but it has a few quirks! 😄

I agree, the license mount is problematic with an AirStream aluminum skin, signal-wise. Both antennas should be vertical to optimize signal transmit and receive, however LEO's may have a problem with the antenna obstructing the view of the license number. The camera needs a custom bracket to LOWER the camera slightly (or as much as possible for your license cavity), and push it all the way to the left so the antenna is not obstructing the license number. If it was me, I would try mounting the camera INSIDE, behind the window. Yes, the window is tinted, but your camera may have enough light gathering to compensate. The night time view may suffer a little, but it may be a worthy trade-off to potentially gain more signal (this would have to be tested of course) and to prevent camera theft. Worse case, extend the antenna out the top of the trailer, but only as a last resort. Test that by poking the antenna with a short 3' SMA cable through a roof vent to simulate how the signal strength improves, before drilling a permanent hole for the final install in the rear. Nice camera, and I like the multiple camera option. Thanks for sharing.
@randylay14395 жыл бұрын
Do you have both antennas aligned the same? In other words, either verticle or horizontal? Having them the same will increase communication between them.
@kristymichael5 жыл бұрын
We do! Again, I think it's just the Aluminum skin interfering with the signal. We're going to look for some other antenna mounting options over the winter and see if we can find a roof spot that can be wired without drilling holes. If so, we'll give it a go and report back on how it improves the signal. Fingers crossed! :)

You don't need to relocate the camera. Just get a cable for the antenna and mount the antenna remotely. For really large trailers, many people will move the antenna to a mid-ship point in the trailer to establish a link. You could also run it up to the roof and magnetically attach it to a point up there, perhaps some ferrous metal on the AC unit. That way still no holes required (but a well concealed wire running up the outside of the Airstream). Probably only adds about $20 to the setup.

Also we found watching the rear view on the dash.. while going down the road... is confusing.. and clutters up the driving. probably why most car manufactures turn off the rear view when going forward... HOWEVER, you need to have a TV Ball hook up camera too... here you can back up the TV and right place for the ball under the hitch... so what you did is limited in ability... Here we use a magnetic mount on the tailgate... looking down at about a 45 deg angle... excellent one time backing location every time ... Hey Sean. Just watched the vid. It might be me , but when I saw him going to initially place the camera by the license plate, the plug in was on the right side as you are looking at it, but when it was installed the camera, the plug in was put on the left side. To me that made the camera upside down. I was noticing that when someone went to pass you, it looked like they were passing you on your right side, and when you commented that the camera has that little lag, the people were passing you on the drivers side. It also looked like you were riding in the left lane from the view of the camera. To me because I think he put the camera in upside down, you need to go into your settings and flip the view, so that if someone is passing you on the drivers side it will also reflect that not only with the camera, but with the vehicle coming up your drivers side.

Just remember that you're seeing multiple different shots edited together---sometimes we were in the right lane, and sometimes we were in the left lane. One thing I noticed right off was that you had your camera (transmitter) antenna and display (receiver) antennas oriented wrong which would really degrade the system performance. You had the camera antenna positioned vertical and the display antenna positioned horizontal, like this... I __ They need to be the same for best signal quality, like this... I I or __ __ Also, never point one antenna directly at or away from the other (end on like when aiming a rifle at an object). This would be worst case. Thanx for the review and travel safe.

I have tried several of these cameras on my 25 foot Airstream and sent them back as the lag time was unacceptable.
