I feel like she was always a storyteller, she's just become more personal and better at telling her own stories. I remember in 2015 she said that she didn't consider herself a good singer but she had to sing bc she couldn't imagine someone else singing her songs. NOW she's much better and more confident all around. to the point where she's said she'd like to write songs for others. particularly Rihanna. it's been so awesome to see her grow and evolve. and yes, manic is incredible. she bares herself and she makes herself vulnerable but in a confident way. so it shouldn't make anyone ever want to use it against her bc it's just so real and beautiful. (bc unfortunately, in her position, ppl look for ammunition is the only reason I said that last but) x

little but important things to note: - the echo at "eastside", a clip from one of her previous songs, at around 0:30, calls back to how even when she was commercially successful she was still unhappy - the conversational tone at "oh my god theres no way thats me" - in the verse that starts at 1:00 theres one bad statement for every good statement ("i've quit smoking/recently i've tried", "bought another house/never go outside") - again, the conversational tone in the line "i forget half the people who i've gotten in bed" - the desync between the instrumental and the lyrics in the line "hoping my father would finally call me", as if shes rushing to get the words out for such a painful line - the inflection on where she says "love of my life" at 1:36 - when she speaks at the end shes almost mumbling, disappointed and ashamed about something so trivial - the instrumentals drop out, she sings acapella and all that is left on screen is her portrait, one that went from a realistic drawing to a messy outline, symbolizing how much of herself she has lost

-"Lost the love of my life to an ivory powder. But then I realize that I'm no higher power" In AA / NA belief in a higher power is part of recovery. Halsey is humbled by the fact that she couldn't make the woman she describes as the love of her life choose her over cocaine.

Pink hair in detroit was right, when I first heard you, it was when my dad had committed suicide, all I did was replay your music it was the only thing that was even close to the emotions I was feeling, It was the only thing that comforted me when nothing else could, it was the only music that help me feel completely sane when I was completely insane.... It’s crazy how just one song can keep you breathing when you can’t seem to do it yourself. I have always related to your music in some kind of way even if it meant something completely different to others and you. Please keep being genuine and beautiful inside and outside.♥️

I just wanna say that this song absolutely crushed me. This is one of those song where I was sold on the first note. The lyrics are beautifully heartbreaking. Like I can’t stop crying. Jesus I just wanna give her a hug. Also the lyric “Ashley you gotta promise us that you won’t die cause we need you and honestly I think that she lied”really hit fucking hard. Because my name is Ashley and I’ve felt this emotion throughout different moments in my life. That lyric was really personal and it hit me deep. I really admire an artist that’s willing to expose their true selves unabashedly to the world. Halsey is more than just a singer she is an artist in so many forms and I’m thankful for her. I’m thankful for Ashley.

The first drawing-- realist perfection. Flowing hair and features just right. She looks straight out of a magazine. Halsey. She's a dream, only in monochrome. But look closer, no, she actually has hues of color etched on every inch of her skin. Her hair is really not that long, it's chopped and shorter than what attracts mass-appeal. But she looks the same, her eyes look the same. Almost like a puzzle that was put back in its place. That's Ashley. Imperfect, broken and supremely real. We love you.

After I heard the album and especially this song 929, I fall in love with Halsey more. "Manic" is one of the greatest albums I saw, its beautiful how Halsey tells us a story within a song and by that story it educates us that life is very serious and so is love Love you Halsey💛

I'm going through that right now. My acne has never been worse. I cry all of the time. I just want to die, so it's over. Don't think it's the only thing happening to me now. One of my besfriends is a psychopath who actually tried to get me down and basically destroy me😢. I've lost three relatives in 2019. I don't know what to do. If I open up to my family they are just like: "Why are you so weak? I thought you were stronger!". It hurts. I want to end it

As so many other have said, pink-haired girl in Detroit didn’t lie! Your songs resonate with so many at a capacity that they probably couldn’t even imagine before hearing the words and sounds of your music, or your art in general. I found your music and your beautiful personality three years ago when my mother was attacked and we wound up homeless💕even now that my life is so much brighter, and I’ve surpassed that dark time, your music still has that same uplifting impact every time. I’m so grateful for you Halsey! We love you ❤️

🎤 Lyrics: Halsey - 929 [Intro] I really was born at 9:29 AM on 9/29 You think I'm lying but I'm, I'm being dead serious Okay, I'll prove it [Verse] Well, who am I? I'm almost 25 Can't remember half the time that I've been alive 'Cause half was in a cheap apartment And half was on the Eastside (Eastside) They said don't meet your heroes, they're all fuckin' weirdos And God knows that they were right Because nobody loves you, they just try to fuck you Then put you on a feature on the B-Side And who do you call when it's late at night? When the headlines just don't paint the picture right When you look at yourself on a screen and say "Oh my God, there's no way that's me" And I, I quit smoking, well recently, I tried And I bought another house, and I never go outside And I remember this girl with pink hair in Detroit Well, she told me She said, "Ashley, you gotta promise us that you won't die 'Cause we need you," and honestly, I think that she lied And I remember the names of every single kid I've met But I forget half the people who I've gotten in bed And I've stared at the sky in Milwaukee And hoped that my father would finally call me And it's just these things that I'm thinkin' for hours And I'm pickin' my hair out in clumps in the shower Lost the love of my life to an ivory powder But then I realized that I'm no higher power That I wasn't in love then, and I'm still not now And I'm so happy I figured that out I've got a long way to go until self-preservation Think my moral compass is on a vacation And I can't believe I still feed my fucking temptation I'm still looking for my salvation [Chorus] Soft and slow, watch the minutes go Count out loud, so we know you don't keep 'em for yourself Watch the minutes go Count out loud, so we know you don't keep 'em for yourself
