The advantage to this antenna is that it is resonate on three bands and does not require the use of an antenna tuner. The antenna is also a very compact size for 160 meters. A dipole for 160m would be about 250 ft long. A random length of wire and a tuner works but does not work as well as a resonate dipole or any other antenna made for a specific frequency. Hi Dave, I've been meaning to build this antenna for some time now and eventually got round to doing it. I've made a few alterations due to wire thickness as I couldn't get hold of the elements thickness you used. I had to alter the lengths slightly due to UK freq limits. But apart from that followed your instructions and finished with a nice antenna. Just to say many thanks and very pleased. 73s M0AUW

@SethB (can't find you) I agree, the gray PVC is excellent for coil winding and for base insulators on verticals. I used to use glass "Coke" bottles because they were nearly indestructable but they are getting hard to find. Gray and even CPVC make great coil forms and base insulators. The 1/2" CPVC fits right into 3/4" .049 aluminum tubing.

Dave i built this antenna and love it. i have a small lot and i can have 160 meters now thanks. i built as you describe it and work fantastic. after about1 year my coax went bad (used old coax), so i switch to 400 ohm twin lead and my Dentron JR monitor with 100 watt if i can hear them i can work them. thanks Dave Don KB9QHB

I also live on a small lot. How long is your run (along the ground - anchor to anchor)? How high is your center feed point? My only option is to erect a mast along my fence and have the elements run along that fence line. I may be limited to using the 40/80 configuration through.

If you plan to work higher than 3.700 MHz on 80 meters then this 40/80/160 meter antenna is easier to raise in frequency than the dual band 40/80 meter antenna. The coils on the 40/80 antenna will need to be modified to raise it in frequency. To raise the dual band antenna in frequency remove 3 to 6 turns of wire from each coil and experiment with the length. The 40/80/160 meter antenna should not require any modification to the coils. Dave, enjoy your videos - have you a video on a fan dipole? Wondering if your feedpoint connector could be used for that - and how would you connect all the wires from the various bands to the single wire feedpoint wire?

Besides the recommended length of the wire how much did you add to allow to pass through on the PVC and the wind back. I’ve never made an antenna and I always wondered at which point you measure…..i.e. does the length of the wire that has the end twisting back over it count?

Dave, I have enjoyed watching your videos and have learned quiet a few things along the way. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. I have a question for you; have you ever built a fan dipole hf antenna? Me and a friend want to build one that will cover several bands. I made a good score today! I inquired about buying some wire from a customer of mine today while I was making a delivery to them. He asked what I was going to do with it and I told him I want to build an ham radio antenna and he gave me 2,500 ft. of #12 solid conductor wire that was ordered incorrectly and he had no use for it because of the color of the jacket. Now I have plenty of wire to make just about any type antenna that I can think of! I have watched several videos here on You Tube but I would appreciate your input if you have built one before. Now I need an hf rig and I'm all set. I guess I'm putting the cart before the horse but it will all work it's self out in time.

if you do use white pvc pipe you should paint it with a UV blocking paint. I used some pvc pipe for insulators and one ended up breaking on me due to UV exposure.

I like the antenna design Dave. Not sure it would be practical for 75/80 and 160. That magnet wire is pretty light for even a medium sized amplifier, and summer noise gets pretty rough on the lower bands. Would be great to see a heavy duty coil video as a companion to this one.

@@jimw7ry The gauge of the wire helps with the power handling.. They were two separate observations , so I can see where you put them together.. I really don't want to watch the vid all over again to fish out the area for the latter.. Additionally,, butt end connectors are really not the way to go. make the antenna to formula which is always long in my experience , and fold the wired back instead of trimming.. Patrick KK5VN

you said to add 20" of extra wire to each length mentioned, is that what you have found to be needed for this antenna to be better in tune? you also said to use 10" of wire to connect to the feedpoint connecter and the insulator, is that part of the extra 20" at the very last(160m) section and 10" in the beginning of the first(40m) section? thanks!

I have a question regarding the antenna itself in a dipole: Would it be ok, for instance to have doubled-up 550 Paracord running the entire length of the antenna, along both antenna wires of the dipole, or would that create interference of some kind? I figured that I could make loops along the Paracord support through which the antenna would go, and I could regulate the tension on the antenna wires that way and the support cordage could tolerate over 1000 pounds of horsing around on the part of the trees in the wind. The exchange given indicates how many operators are working at the station, and the operating conditions. 1 indicates the number of operators participating, and the Delta indicates that he's operating at his home. If you look at the ARRL's site, you can read more information about the Class indicators for the exchange in section 4.

As long as your SWR does not exceed 2:1 on the band you should not require an antenna tuner. You can build one of these multi-band antennas and as long as each band is tuned correctly you should be able to get away with not using an antenna tuner. Especially if you aren't running power. You might find the lower band (80m on a 40m/80m antenna) is narrow banded and you may need an antenna tuner to talk on more of that portion of the band. A stand alone 20m antenna should work fine on the entire band as long as you tuned it correctly.

Dave, I built the traps exactly as you described, measurements, diameters, and all. Curious as to what your dip meter say's is resonate for each? I would expect the 160 and 80m traps to be resonate at approximately the band. Mine are not even close.
