Your mobile shack is better equipped than my home shack. As usual, educational, inspirational and motivational.

A Yaesu FT991A will do all bands and all modes. And could take you needing 2 radios in the vehicle to just 1 mobile.

This was great Jason, I’ve been wanting to put a screwdriver on the back end of my Jeep Gladiator for some time but I’m not quite ready fo that much of an outlay at the moment. I already have the drivers side hood bracket installed but I haven’t yet mounted the Comet on it yet (still trying to find the best firewall pass through). Thanks, Tom KC3QAC

A great setup Jason!! So far since getting back into ham radio I haven't put anything radio wise into my F-150. I have thought about it, but just haven't done it. Since I have my portable setup in the back pack I figured if I want to do mobile I can do that with the bag. Back in the late 90's, early 2000's I did run HF mobile, had a ICOM 706 in my S-10 and used hamsticks. Thanks for sharing what you have, it really gets me to the point of wanting to put a radio in my truck. Juddie - WD8WV

Outstanding work Jason ! After many years away from the hobby I am currently setting up a 2020 Jeep Gladiator Overland for 2m first then hopefully HF in the future. This video gives me some really great ideas. Thanks, 73 Mike N2MWL

Thanks for showing us around. I run an 857 in my car as well. I use a Diamond HV-7a antenna and it has worked well for me. It covers 2m, 70cm and HF. I usually run 40 and 20 meter coils but you can get others.

Just recently managed to get a combo of a Kenwood V7 , Kam Plus, and Tablet of Laptop running on Win10 with SARtrack running. Its a cool aprs system, and we have places without Cell Data (or Cell anything for that matter) here and I can text a cellphone back in civiliazation while I'm out on the river, or another APRS station can be messaged. .. Very cool. I'd like an easy way to get from JS8 to Cell, or APRS, using a regular Win10 system. So far I can only put my location on APRS.FI from JS8. Still not running RPi.

I use a Icom IC-7100 for AM/FM/SSB/CW modes on HF plus 6m, 2m, and 70cm when I'm mobile. I wish it had APRS and dual watch built in, but since it doesn't I typically use my Kenwood D74 hooked to a second antenna for APRS if I want to do two things at once, otherwise a Mobilinkd TNC paired via BT with my phone can work with the 7100 for APRS.

Great setup. I'm running hamsticks now on 40m and seems to work really well. Agree that the 857 hard to replace when it comes to a mobile radio. It's sad that Yaesu discontinued this rig without a replacement. The only mobile rig, in production right now, that comes close to it is the Icom 7100 but I'm really not a fan of it's form factor. 73 de KF7VUT

Great timing on this video Jason, thanks :-) I’ve just bought a car that I can put some decent antenna mounts on to do a bit more Mobile Ops.

Great video and very nice set up. I have the tarheel 2 also, on a Breedlove stake pocket with the whip fold over on my 16 tundra. I run the 706mkiig for hf. I want to try 2m ssb when you get that going I’d like to see it in action. I’ve also got the 400 great radio.

We have used 2M SSB quite a bit locally. Both with voice and JS8Call. Works great!

Out of curiosity, is there a reason you went with the regular screwdriver as opposed to something like the ATAS-120, which would have given you 2m/70cm also?
@KM4ACK
@KM4ACK 4 жыл бұрын
The ATAS wouldn't give me 80M. It was a trade off.

Regarding that quick disconnect do you remember which model it is? It looks like the Firestik K-1A. This is exactly what i need for my ATAS120! Thanks :)

I can't say for certain what the name brand is or if it is a name brand. I picked it up at a local hamfest several years ago. The best I can tell from the photos online, these seem to be identical amzn.to/3JiwC32 (affiliate link)

@@KM4ACK Roger that! I googled 'quick disconnect antenna' after watching your video. I ordered a couple 'Firestik K-1A' from a cb shop in Illinois that night. I've ran Firestik antenna's with cb's in my trucks and really like the quality. Good stuff!

Hi Jason, I've been learning a lot through you, and all your experiments in hamworld. I'm about ready to buy my initial loadout, and am struggling to figure out which mobiles (like your Yaesu 891) have the CAT connection for a raspberry pi. Looking for an economical, but robust solution that I can put into a portable kit, but when I look up the spec sheets, I rarely see CAT connection listed, even on devices I know have it. Tips for my search? Budget recommendations?
@KM4ACK
@KM4ACK 4 жыл бұрын
Ask any two hams this question and you will likely get three different answers. I love the 891 and find it hard to beat for the money. I don't own one but a lot of guys like the Xiegu G90. Both are capable of CAT control with the pi. K8MRD did a great review of the G90 kzbin.info/www/bejne/nairk42XqK2fm7M

What's a yeasu ft 817 worth these days? I'd like to upgrade to a similar radio with more tx power, or would an amplifier be sufficient, for a mobile station. Already have a pi and touch screen I've yet to install in the pickup. Space isn't an issue as it's an extended cab and I removed the rear seats to make room for tools and radio gear
@KM4ACK
@KM4ACK 4 жыл бұрын
You could go with an amp or move to a radio like the Yaesu 891 for around $650. The 891 doesn't have 2M/440 though. It is an HF only rig
