I started painting with gouache and watercolor a few years ago. Before then I painted acrylic on canvas. My inspiration for trying was Alex Ross. He’s very realistic with his approach. He paints the gray tones in then the colors afterwards. Soo I’ve tried that with some success. I don’t always do that though. What I’ve discovered though is that while gouache can’t get detail and realism, you can also be expressive and painterly. Which I also enjoy from time to time.

I'm an oil painter dipping my brush into gouache for the first time and your wonderful videos have been both a guide and an inspiration. In this one, you had both astonishing colours and some very lovely music! It is a great idea to have a _test patch_ to be able to figure out if you made the right mixture, but one thing I'm struggling with is... If I lay down paint on the test patch, and then wait for it to dry... Then by the time it is dry, so is the paint on my palette. Assuming it is good, do I just have to try to make the same mixture again? Or is there some way to keep the palette paint wet and workable?

I've tried using watercolour paint for the first few layers. The end result has been okay, but I seem to cover lots of work done in watercolour. Can't decide if this is worth the effort; maybe I should go straight in with thin gouache.

I get that your still getting some lift of colors placed earlier in the work. Was always warned to restrict the number of layers while working in gouache so the painting doesn't get oversaturated with pigment. The paper only has so much ability to absorb water or color due to sizing that is present in the makers process of manufacture. Not sure if you just need to think more about the mood of the painting beforehand, keying your color selrctions, while letting the cool and warm hues play off one another, or suggest you pursue a more fresco type of converse color strategies that permit the glow from below creep into the final distribution of layers at the end. There are as many ways to approach these things as there are subjects to represent. You did complete a beautiful rendering which is precisely the reason for your all your efforts, and that may be the entire point as far as your concerned. Have a great day.
