The Foster Journey

Күн бұрын

Yes it's a sailboat, but the Yanmar 40hp diesel engine is an important piece of our auxiliary power, and this marine diesel engine lesson was critical to us as cruisers! Blake Aslin is a diesel engine professional who helped us out in a 4 hour class, and now we're sharing a small piece of what we learned!
If you're interested in learning about a sailboat diesel engine - the oil change, fuel system, fuel filters, coolant systems, and any problem or question about diesel engines, Blake offers an amazing class!

Who Are We?
We're the Fosters, and we just sold our hourse and purchased a sailboat, Cadence, a Catalina 387. We're on a journey to minimize our life, learn to live on a sailboat, and sail away.
In 2019, Matt quit his public education career of 15 years, and went full-time building his own business. Olivia is ready to explore the world, and so am I...but first, we have to save up, learn about sailing, and figure out a way to leave land.
We're sharing this journey with you in hopes that it'll bring you a smile, provide something helpful, and maybe give a bit of inspiration to live life on your terms - to explore your world.
Join us as we take this journey into the unknown, and share some laughs along the way.

You need to have Tools! You need to have a spare starter and alternator and water pump and impeller. You should also have a spare fresh water pump. And depending on what type of head you have have a replacement kit or mersarater. Get some liquid electrical tape. Wd 40 .ooo and some electrical wire for when you have to rewire something. Remember with the spare parts that I liked is so when it goes out [And It Well Go Out] you have the WRIGHT PART and you don't have to wait on the part to get to you. Witch it can take Weeks to get to you. It will Save you $ and headaches later. Have a LOTS of fuel filters. Get a baha fuil filter so you can fill your tank up though it. Those are some of the things I can think of for now. I wish I had known those things when i first went out. Would have saved us a hole 🕳 lot of headaches. But Good luck have fun and keep making video's. Aloha fron the Big Island of Hawaii. Ooo and if you can tell everyone in Pearland Texas We said Hi!

@@TheFosterJourney you can find thim at west marine. And yes I was born in Pearland A long time ago. It has grown so big now. Ooo and I forgot you should have a few extra belts for the engine and for the generator. If you have one.

Yeah Nancy I'm impressed! Thanks for another great video and for Blake reminding us that if you don't have clean fuel you're going to have issues. We're deep into our boat projects too. June is right around the corner, looking forward to hearing which plan you decided on.

Use the tapered end of a plastic tie wrap instead of a sharp metal pick. If the pick scraps the o-ring groove you can have sealing issues. Stick the metal pick into the o-ring if you have to use it. Nice video. Bleeding my Yanmar 3GM30FV with the micro lift pump. Mind numbingly slow.

I'd love to hear what Blake thinks of the diesel top section rebuild of the Bums on the Boat engine. I learned a lot from that, what would he add ? I'd put a youtube link to the 3 or 4 episodes on the rebuild but I think KZbin frowns on that. Maybe he saw it ? WOW, that engine was easy to get to. That can't be the engine compartment is it ?

great episode and love that engine access. Wish my Catalina 470 was like that! The engine sure did seem to have a lot of movement (laterally)... curious how your shaft looks while runnning and state of your engine mounts???
@TheFosterJourney

add a pump and racor filters to do nothing but recirculate the fuel in the diesel tank through the filters, to clean bad fuel and to keep algae and water out of the tank, can use racor filter, i might go with cat truck screw on filters, one fuel fiter and one water separator filter and add a screen filter with clear bowl can usually see if water is in there and supposed to drain it out the bottom, oh and add a pressure gauge to know when the filters are clogging
@TheFosterJourney
@TheFosterJourney 3 жыл бұрын
What type/size pump do you use for this?
@over-there
@over-there 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheFosterJourney I havnt bought one yet, like the Carter P4594 electric side wall mount, same with the filters, look at racor fuel water separators, strainers, filters, check voltage and fitting sizes. I first saw the algae in diesel problem 3 decades ago and turned down buying a boat for this reason, back then I didnt no how to prevent or eliminate it, it extends the life of your engine diesel filter, ask some other people, I am doing a major refit now and will be installing this recirculating filter system, many people also needed it getting fuel in other countries, or letting the fuel sit during winter and such, hope that at least gets you started

Very interesting segment guys. I might have missed it but when the engine stalled after start up did you have to bleed more air out or just run it at higher rpm to let it burp on its own? Thanks again!
@SOLDOZER
@SOLDOZER 3 жыл бұрын
The engine can't compress air. Like he said if there's air in the line, you can crank all day and it wont start. It had to be something else.

We cranked it the second time with higher rpms and it worked itself out.
