When Ron Chernow, who wrote the biography that inspired the play and was the historical consultant for the play, first heard that opening number, he was shocked. He couldn’t believe that Lin-Manuel got the first 40 pages of the book into four minutes of song. Chernow also had a hilarious reaction to an early workshop performance, where he heard “Aaron Burr, Sir” for the first time. He talked to LMM after and said that Hamilton never punched the bursar at Princeton. Lin had to tell him that it was a joke, and also that Steven Sondheim was also at that performance and let out a very loud bark of his distinct laughter at the line, so there was no way in hell he would be taking it out.

Lord, yes. It's truly annoying. I know that there is a lot of information being given in each song...but c'mon...you literally see her introduce them (TWICE) & she gives you THREE reasons why she does. The fact that this is not how it all "really" happened is irrelevant to THIS story. Soooo many people ignore the words in BOTH SONGS & jump straight to "Angelica wants her sister's husband"...🙄

When the show was so popular that ticket prices were through the roof, they had regular ticket drawings where they would have a small number of tickets for just $10-15. People would gather outside the theater for the drawing to see if they got lucky. To entertain the crowd, Lin, the cast, and even other Broadway stars would come out and perform or do a reading. My favorite was when the three men who had played the king lip-synched The Schuyler Sisters. Hilarious!

There are two iconic poses from this play that are in stark contrast to each other. “My Shot” ends with Hamilton posing with his hand in the air. “The Room Where It Happens” ends with Burr posing with his hand pointed down to the ground. Both of those songs are pivotal in explaining how the two get to where they are at the end.

LMM did take artistic license and make a few small changes, but it's wild to me how basically all the major plot points are historically accurate. Stuff that sounds unbelievable, made up just to make the narrative compelling, is actually true. Like Burr and Hamilton working joint defense for the US's first murder trial, AH publishing a public account of his affair in order to clear himself of criminal accusations, Eliza burning their letters, or Phillip and AH both dying in duels with the same set of dueling pistols; all of that actually happened!

Historically, Ham never knew about his son getting into the duel that killed him (I think the pistols were John Church's but I don't remember if it's for this duel or the Ham-Burr one), and he was so grief-stricken that he literally fainted during the funeral. Also, Philip's death didn't just basically ruin Ham. It led to Philip's younger sister, Angelica Hamilton, going insane, with her mind permanently stuck at before Philip died.

Excellent. One of if not the best Broadway musicals ever! “So Hamilton is a person?” Oh yeah, you’re going in blind! Look at the guy on any ten dollar bill in your pocket! And, as the first ever Treasury Secretary- check out the back of the bill and what building is on it. “I hope they [Hamilton & Burr] meet again…” yeah, about that… In the Chernow biography that Lin Manuel Miranda based the musical on, Hamilton and Angelica definitely had a very affectionate, flirtatious relationship as they both had similar intellects. The attraction was obvious to many but he concluded that it was unlikely it went beyond that affectionate friendship. Obviously, the Reynolds affair is a whole different matter. We were so blessed to have so many smart and creative leaders in the Founders generation. For all their internal disagreements they built a wholly new form of government that’s lasted nearly 250 years. Both Jefferson / Madison’s anti-Federalist positions and Hamilton’s Federalist arguments had validity and they each contributed to the many great compromises that built the foundations of our nation. LMM is truly a genius. I’ve read the Cheenow biography and it’s very good but to take that highly researched scholastic work of history and turn it into a sing through rap-heavy musical?!? Where he writes all the lyrics, music, etc. Amazing. And then to star in it. But give some of the best songs to other characters, especially Burt and Angelica. Worth a second watch. Notice how the Helpless scenes at the ball have the same choreography as Satisfied but it’s in the background while Eliza sings. My wife and I had the honor of seeing this on Broadway, on a road show in Portland, and in the West End of London. Eliza is a remarkable figure Who, as noted, lives to a an old age especially for that era and Chernow gives her enormous credit. Between high school history and Covid classes, college history and political science classes and law school, I probably read the Federalist Papers 2 dozen times. The little riff Burr does about Hamilton’s outsized role in them always gives me chills.

If I recall correctly, there was a campaign in the early 2010s to replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10 with Harriet Tubman. This musical saved Hamilton from being replaced. That’s not to say that Tubman doesn’t deserve to be on a bill, but we should replace Jackson’s racist ass from the $20 😅

Thanks so much for posting. When you spoke about your sister, I thought you might like to know that Lin has a sister very much like yours. There is a Disney movie called "Encanto" with songs by Lin. It is primarily about family dynamics. The songs are fantastic and the messages are so powerful. He wrote a song called "Surface Pressure" for which he was inspired by the family responsibility imposed upon his sister. His first musical, In the Heights was made into a movie a few years ago. Anthony Ramos, the guy who played Lorenz, starred in the role Lin originated on Broadway. I think you would enjoy both pieces.

Ahhh, another 1st timer Hamilton reaction, welcome to the Ham-fandom!! Loving that you immediately appreciated everything: the story, the history, the talent, the staging --- you took it all in and were rewarded with the enjoyment of what is probably one of the greatest Broadway shows ever. Since you mentioned that you are willing to take the deep dive into how this all came about, I can assure you there is a long and deep rabbit hole of videos about how this show was made. Start with Lin Manuel's first performance of the opening song (which at that point was the only one he had written after two years working on it) performed at a White House poetry slam (!) 7 years before the show made its way to Broadway. There are also numerous documentaries posted here on KZbin about how the show came about, about how Lin researched the history and joint interviews of him, the (stage) director, musical director and the choreographer where they discuss how they worked together to build the vision you just witnessed. Oh and as someone else commented, definitely catch the performances of the whole cast performing at the White House --- in particular the one where Chris Jackson who plays George Washington sings "Once Last Time" to Obama (and Joe Biden as VP) right at the time that Obama was getting ready to leave office. There is also a wonderful series by Howard Lin who does a deep dissection of the musical motifs, lyrics and rap influences of all the songs. And yes go back and listen to both the complete Hamilton Mixtape you previously caught a piece of as well as Weird Al Yankovic's "Hamilton Polka" and be astounded at what his genius brings to this. To paraphrase King George III at the beginning: thank you and enjoy everything about this show!

You really are working your way through all my favourites, it's ridiculous. Since you enjoyed this I'd love to see reactions to Sweeney Todd and Les Miserables. You enjoyed the whole "callback" motifs thing that's common in musicals and one of the reasons why they're so cool. It's so satisfying to see how cleverly songs can be weaved into each other. I've seen Hamilton live twice. One of the times I was sat in the centre seat of the front row (cause the theatre randomly sold tickets for that seat for only £37!) It was such an insane experience. I always enjoyed listening to Dear Theodosia on the soundtrack but didn't expect it to destroy me like it did when seeing it live - seeing both characters close up and singing about their children with such love in their eyes. And then I obviously sobbed my heart out during (and after) the scene where Hamilton's son dies. Then that's followed up with Jefferson and Madison singing/rapping an upbeat song... and at the end they're stood right at the edge of the stage... and the actors looked at me and saw I was smiling and sobbing at the same time and they both gave me a massive grin and blew kisses. It was adorable.

Franklin, I'm currently following along with your reacts to The Wire (which are FANTASTIC, by the way!), and I was so excited to see that you were reacting to Hamilton! I have to admit that, as an American, I was shocked at first that at first you didn't seem to know who Hamilton was or even if this was a true story. Then I told myself: stop being so small-minded! Franklin's Nigerian - what reason would he have to know about the American Revolution or George Washington or Thomas Jefferson or whatever? The world doesn't revolve around the US. Sometimes our leaders act like it does (and you can expect that to get a LOT worse for the next 4 years), but it doesn't. Oh - someone should have warned you - Act 2 is a cry-fest. "One More Time" is like the warm-up cry, and starting with "Burn," you might as well just break out the tissue box. Thank you for your thoughtful analysis, as always.

Wonderful reaction as always! While it is so cool to have all the closeups and different camera angles, you miss out on some of the incredible light design from seeing it live. They manage to capture some of it, but in close up mode, you're obviously not seeing the whole stage. One of my favorite parts of the show is the lighting in Wait for It 😍

This has to be my favourite Hamilton reaction. I like how you didn’t jump to conclusions with Angelica like most and how you pointed out many details others didn’t get in their first time watching. Definitely subscribing. 🫶🏼

Hamilton is not only a musical.. It is THE musical. I was fortunate enough to win front row seats to one of the San Francisco performances during the tour. Hands down.. the best thing I've ever seen done live on a stage..ANYWHERE.

for my 8th grade U.S history class we had to learn all the songs to take the state required test and it honestly helped us out a lot for the test and we didn’t even get to see the live version be released until years later:’)

I was born in the 1960s. When we took our state-required civics test in 8th grade, part of it included writing the complete Preamble to the Constitution. The tv series of shorts called Schoolhouse Rock was a big part of our Saturday mornings in the ‘70s. In the test room, you could hear a certain song being hummed all over the room-it was the tune for the Schoolhouse Rock song of the Preamble. I still remember that 44 years later because of that tv series!

18:43 heh I could a 100% see Lestat singing You’ll be Back, such a toxic partner song (but to a country!) Edit: btw if you love Helpless it’s based on a Beyoncé song “Countdown”. I think another musical you could really like is Jesus Christ Superstar, but I don’t recommend the movie from the 70s (I know, unpopular opinion) but the 2018 version (it has the actor who played Santiago on IWTV), the voices are not that good but the production is excellent. Edit 2: cat!

the guy who was plays hamilton made this whole play. So Hamilton is a real guy in history and you don’t learn much about individual character characters but in this musical, you’ll learn about each of the characters in a new light through singing. Growing up in the United States and learning history you don’t learn much about Hamilton so watching this i know a few things but I learned even more And most of this is true and the guy made Hamilton did his research and made all the songs about the history and it’s all told through the perspective of his wife Alexander‘s wife and if you can’t tell whenever she is singing time is going slow, but for Alexander Hamilton, it’s all sped up when he sings because he’s running out of time throughout throughout the whole show, I didn’t learn this or pick it up until somebody showed me and pointed it out that when Eliza sings she sing normally but every one else is fast because it’s told though her eyes. And I’m pretty sure the king in here is the king of England at that period of time

It had been a while since I commented on one of your videos. I couldn't let this one pass without letting you know that: 1. You are my favorite First Time Watcher/Reactor/all-around-awesome-appreciator-of-great-media. 2. Hamilton is up there in Top Masterpieces of All Time. 3. The combination of 1 and 2 = automatically hitting PLAY on this video as soon as I saw it.

I just saw the Hamilton tour three times when it came back to North Carolina. The most recent was a week and a half ago. It is a masterpiece of an experience. I haven't made it through a live show without crying at least times, and I've seen it twelve times in total (although only one original Broadway cast member was still performing by the time I got on the bandwagon). People laughing, crying, clapping, sniffling - it's incredible. I also have the biography and it's such an in depth and nerdy ass read for a vacation book lol. Loved loved loved your reaction! You really do catch so much.

Even if it’s just for yourself in your free time you have to watch First Burn (a different version of the Burn song that Eliza sings). It is sang by several different actresses that played Eliza at different times. Also, listen to Congratulation on the mixtape. It is a longer version of Angelica’s part in Hurricane and it is so good.

Hello I watched this play just tonight and have some questions for the knowledgeable Hamilton fans, when Burr says at the end he was young and foolish and made mistakes what did he mean by that? Because when he shot Hamilton I thought they were both well into their 50s. I assume he was talking about him? (or was he talking about something else completely?) or where they younger than 50 or something? I’m sorry if I sound stupid I’m just confused 😅

Angelica as a mistress is murky waters, there is NO solid proof of an affair. Eliza, after Hamilton's death becomes obsessed with his legacy, however, after Angelica death, for a decade, Eliza does NOTHING pertaining to Hamilton's legacy. Angelica's husband, Mr. Church does not bury Angelica with the family, Angelica is buried in the Livingstons' private vault in Trinity Churchyard. Her grave was unmarked for a long time, but she was given a plaque after becoming more popular through the Hamilton musical. Mr. Church promptly sailed back to England, and never returned. This leaves many to speculate that Eliza and Mr. Church did uncover proof of an affair among Angelica's belongings and destroyed them, thus leaving historians only to speculate there was an affair. However, history shows that Eliza burned MANY of Alexander's letters, thus leaving a lot of questions regarding their lives, and controlling the way history sees the family.

For a film told from multiple perspectives, you have to see Kurosawa’s iconic movie Rashomon. It’s the textbook example of that type of story.
