i get what you're saying, but I think this video only makes sense BECAUSE of those history classes you had. You have the general framework of what was going on already in your mind because of history class. This video would be super confusing without it

I like what you both said (Laughing and Just). I think I would have learned a lot more if my history teachers had included the facts with the story of history. The line of history would be filled with sidebars and asides as we learned when events occurred and what the terms meant. But the main focus should always be on the story and what can we learn from it.

@@justsomebody-1665 Most people don't like history because the way it's taught. It's dry, impersonal, distant. It doesn't usually put you in the minds of the people at the time, the reasons why people did what they did, both the good and the bad. What words mean, usually gets taught in English classes. History is about how we got to where we are. History in school was the teacher just making sure they checked the appropriate boxes for what was on the lesson plan, who cares if we actually learn something that matters. We'll just see if the students sponged up enough material to spew back out the right answers for that test. Few teachers I had didn't care of we learned or not, it was apparent to me as a student when one did and I respected those teachers, sadly none of those teachers that cared were history teachers.

@@LaughingMan_d8D Yeah, like i said before i get what you're saying. I don't disagree with you. I just think you also have to remember that all those dry boring facts are the foundation you need to understand the context in the cooler stories you want. And they probably don't have time in a 45 min class or whatever to fit all the facts and also a bunch of cool stories. But I agree more cool stories helps students pay attention and helps them be interested a LOT. I had a history teacher in college that taught that way and it was one of my favorite classes. I'm just saying I wouldnt have known wtf he was talking about if I hadn't had high school history first.

I totally agree with your post @@LaughingMan_d8D History classes were horrible, boring, memory tests for dates, place names, people names with almost zero connection to the people involved and what motivated them. "My boy" in that context, in that time, would have been an appropriate and affectionate term between men in that situation and a high compliment, especially coming from a respected older man, and surely a father-figure to Hamilton, of such distinction as Washington. America USED to be comparable in many ways to America, and while it did make some improvements as time went on, it set steps back, such as with Lincoln centralizing government further, Woodrow Wilson, FDR and Nixon making the American economy less free, and everything Obama did. America is undoubtably the biggest and greatest nation in the world, but quantity != quality, and while it might be pretty up there in terms of quality, certainly ahead of our neighbors (France, England and Germany), it still is no rival to the degree of freedoms and people we have in Switzerland. Complete overstatement. He was part of a group of geniuses who nursed the U.S. into existence. All of them played key roles. Paine fired the idea of independence. Adams and Franklin provided wisdom, motivational force, and got international support for the fight. Jefferson gave us the words that justified the cause. Washington and Hamilton kept the army going long enough for the British to get sick of the war. After independence was achieved, Washington lead with a firm but not overbearing hand, and then stepped down, setting an example that is wondered at by anyone who has studied other leaders. And Madison gave initial form to the constitution using principles taken from philosophers who were respected by the founders. The constitution was debated in a convention of brilliant men and ratified. Hamilton pushed for a much more powerful federal government than the constitution allows, but his idea of a federal government is there.

It's my understanding, the evidence is mixed on firing in the air. On the one hand, some say he announced his intention to do so before the duel. Others say he did no such thing, suffered a hair-trigger discharge whilst leveling the pistol, & only later did some make up the aforementioned claim to cover for his honor. Historians will probably never know the truth. But, in any event, his was, sadly, a pointless death.
@meganthomas47685 жыл бұрын
Soldierboy54b I don’t think that it is really debatable whether he announced his intention before the duel, the document he wrote and the letters to his wife all in his hand say he was intending to reserve his fire - That’s not to say Burr knew that (though I don’t think it justified what he did.) in fact burr probably didn’t know. You are right though, it was a pointless death. Even if he did throw it away instead of reserve completely, it landed in a tree far above Burr’s head, which may have meant it went off while early while he was aiming to the sky. I think you either have to believe one of the first two, or call Hamilton a liar. I think in recent years many have gone for the latter option to restore some of Burr’s honour.

Actually, Burr has NEVER been more sympathetic than he is now, and that's a direct result of the musical. The most popular song from that musical is Burr's. He's probably the only Broadway character that people eagerly audition for specifically. If any historical figure's reputation was damaged by the musical, it was Jefferson's. And that mainly because they changed his personality a LOT in order to fit the narrative. But Jefferson of the musical isn't the Jefferson we see through history's eyes; he's the Jefferson we see through Hamilton's eyes. And while Hamilton used to be friends with both Burr and Madison, he held nothing but contempt for Jefferson. The only time they ever agreed on anything was when Islamic terrorists threatened American properties abroad (you read that right). Jefferson took a strong stance on the defense of America against terrorism, while Burr rode the fence about it. That's the only reason Hamilton endorsed Jefferson for president over Burr. So in a musical told from Hamilton's perspective, no love would be lost on T-Jeff. But I'll tell you what, Jefferson's love of macaroni and cheese has become downright memetic, thanks to the inspiration of the musical.

While not to diminish Hamilton's accomplishments and influence on the productive and successful parts he did contribute to, he also committed resources just as much to corrupting the system alongside members like Franklin and Washington, who whether entirely intentional or not, put in backdoor systems that weakened the populace and left it to become a tyrannical government which could devour the souls of many a man for their greed and power. Their advocation for the union in the manner they did relegating morals and ethics to a side job without seeking for answers or truth poisoned every endeavor and left a stain on the heart and soul of the mutant of a nation they made. And it was characters like Jackson and Lincoln that took such advantages they left in the systems they built that harmed the nation with internal scars few truly care to see. The American experiment wasn't free enough, wasn't noble enough, nor righteousness, and it left those goals by the wayside for a long time. And with the advent of the downfall, the Roman collapse is enshrined and willing to repeat itself because men have lost their way, women have been put to the grind and told to open themselves up to the pleasures, the states have been relegated to honorific bullcrap to which no single man of the state will stand up for, and for which every federal man has been given his honorary badge of the modern mob, theft, and murder that draws its roots all the way back to the early 1800s. We need to decide soon whether a man born of God's will has deserved the rights bestowed inherently and grant them with or without a formal explicit government. And thus we should ask why even make a system that no regular man can understand unambiguously.

The title of this video is ridiculous, the idea of what America was and could be was hardly his first or alone; at best you could say "Hamilton; the Man who Strengthened and Empowered the Federal Government". Tartakovsky says at 4:55 "Hamilton lived in a time when the great danger to the national project was a government that was too weak, we live in a time when many believe that the great danger to the nation is from a national government grown too strong. The ideal, Hamilton would have told us, is somewhere in between." I don't know that Hamilton would think our government is too strong; Hamilton's drive for a stronger federation was not all bad, but it is a big part of why our federal government is out of control now: he was an authoritarian who needed the tempering of the other Founding Father's. Most importantly and glaringly Mr. Tartakovsky, in your fanboying over Hamilton you left out why he and Burr were such intense rivals: Burr hated the idea of a Central Bank as he knew it was a way for the very rich to exploit not just the poor but the entire nation, by manipulating the government itself. And Burr was right, Hamilton's dreams of a Central Bank were later realized by a cabal of the rich and powerful, giving us the secretive, economy controlling, Federal Reserve which created the housing bubble and bust that caused the Great Recession which we are still recovering from. That too is what we have Hamilton to thank for. History is complex because humans are complicated and imperfect, it does us all harm when either demonize and ignore the good motives and deeds of great leaders of the past, or whitewash their sins and failures to idolize them.

It would be a huge exaggeration to say he invented America. Hamilton was the man who wanted to destroy America with socialism. Thanks to Jefferson, he was not able to completely do it. The past economic crisis is the inevitable consequence from Hamilton's curse. Hamilton was a compulsive statist who wanted to bring the corrupt British mercantilist system - the very system the American Revolution was fought to escape from - to America. He fought fiercely for his program of corporate welfare, protectionist tariffs, public debt, pervasive taxation, and a central bank run by politicians and their appointees out of the nation’s capital.Hamilton and his political compatriots, the Federalists, understood that a mercantilist empire is a very bad thing if you are on the paying end, as the colonists were. But if you are on the receiving end, that’s altogether different. Hamilton was neither the inventor of capitalism in America nor "the prophet of the capitalist revolution in America," as biographer Ron Chernow ludicrously asserts. He was the instigator of "crony capitalism," or government primarily for the benefit of the well-connected business class. Far from advocating capitalism, Hamilton was "befogged in the mists of mercantilism" according to the great late nineteenth century sociologist William Graham Sumner. We can only be thankful to Burr for killing him before he could try to do any more harm. We had another Hamilton in Obama and look at all the destruction that happened. Thankfully, we now have another Jefferson with Trump to fix all the mistakes of our past.
@TheGeorgeD136 жыл бұрын
To say Obama was another Hamilton is just stupid no matter how you slice it. There has been no destruction under Obama and Trump hasn't done much of anything to fix the mistakes of our past. Well, this video took a bizarre turn right at the end. It was just totally normal Hamilton stuff, all about his efforts for a more centralized government, and then, totally unsupported, it is claimed that Hamilton would have supported a less centralized federal government than the one we have right now. Let's be clear: I have no idea what Hamilton would have said about our modern political system. But to just toss that out, right at the end, when nothing in the video pointed that way, well, it's silly. This could have been a bog standard video about a cool dude, but the PragerU political message must be shoehorned in at every turn, even when everything points the exact opposite direction. Jefferson is literally sitting right there supporting a weaker federal government. There's no need to co-opt Hamilton. The citation list has yet to be added, so it's vaguely feasible that the argument will be supported, but, first, given the history of PragerU citations, I'm not holding my breath, and, second, this is really the sort of thing you need to give arguments for in the video.
