How I train loose-leash walking in 15-minutes 🦮🚶‍♂️⬇️

This is how I train ALL dogs to loose-leash walk in 15-20 minutes. This is my exact process, and I have never had a dog who this did not work on. I hope this helps you guys out.
Theory:
Loose-leash walking is the first thing we train all dogs because it allows us to change their mindset. If your dog is pulling you on the leash, they are ignoring you on the most fundamental level.
Prerequisites:
Whether you’re using a prong collar or a slip lead, make sure the dog is properly conditioned to the tool you are using. (I have dedicated videos on how to do this.)
Phase 1: U-Turns
Walk back and forth in a straight line. If the dog doesn’t pay attention and misses the turn, they smack the end of the leash. If they do catch the turn, mark and reward with food, or simply pet and praise. This phase begins to change the mindset. Move on once your dog catches every turn without issue.
Phase 2: Sporadic Walking
Walk unpredictably by changing your pace and direction abruptly. It’s your dog’s job to follow you. If they don’t pay attention, there’s a consequence, if they do pay attention, there’s a consequence. This phase builds engagement. Move on once the dog is glued to you.
Phase 3: Punish the Pulling
Walk as you normally would and don’t give the dog any commands. If they get to the end of the leash, feel the pressure, then give into it, great. If they feel the pressure and brace into it, they are ignoring you, and we are going to punish that decision. Create slack on the leash, and pop. The level of pop depends on the sensitivity level of the dog.
Most common mistake:
The most common mistake people make is not actually punishing the pulling. They half-ass it because their emotions get wrapped up in the training.
Action plan:
Go out for 15-30 minutes and practice all 3 phases with your dog. Once you are on phase 3, you remain on phase 3. If your dog is unresponsive on a flat collar, use a slip lead or a prong collar.

I understand the importance of these tools, but I can’t stand people who don’t know how to use them. Misuse of a prong collar or an e collar can make the dogs “aggression” 10x worse. I’m just advocating for everybody to be informed.

Probably because pulling it’s rewarding to him, try positive reinforcement.I’d start off with the lightest corrections first and sparingly move to harder ones. Definitely go watch lots of tutorials! But reward every slight engagement your dog gives you.

The ONLY reason it doesn't work is because we have taught that pulling is rewarding to the dog. We need to be CONSISTENT with the SAME training when it has become an issue! Do not switch and try different methods. It takes time and ALL your patience for a week, but it's better than spending 10 years with a pulling dog! 😄 Basics: 🚫Dog pulls - you walk forward. You are rewarding the pulling. This is a Positive Reinforcement. ✅Dog pull - you stop. You don't walk forward until the leash is loose. This is a Negative Punishment in itself. 1️⃣. Be stern and say NO exactly when the leash becomes tense and STOP. Your dog needs to know verbally when and what's the problem for future taught commands. No need to yank. You can pull back with the same result. 2️⃣. You can lure the dog or call the dog to come to you at first if the dog is just standing. You need to teach your dog what you WANT him to do. 3️⃣. Praise/reward/play everytime and often at first, when the leash becomes/is loose! 👇MORE ELABORATE TIPS to those who care to read and learn: ❇️Give your dog something to do during walks. ALL dogs are working breeds! Teach them to jump up on a stone. To put their paws on a tree, go around a bench, do tricks! Give them commands for each (and reward/praise/play). Dogs WANT to work and DO THINGS! ***Your dog will naturally start to look at you for tasks to do, making pulling easier to work with!*** ✴️Reward exactly when the leash becomes even slightly loose at first. Then with progress, ask for looser and looser before you reward. ✴️Reward heavily and praise calmly, and OFTEN in the beginning - all the time the leash is loose. ✴️Reward when the dog looks back at you. Stop and sit dog at their level and scratch/pet/give treats, or take out a toy and play. ****Make yourself more interesting than the environment. ***** ✴️Use high value rewards at first. Whatever your dog loves the most. Toys, sausage, praise, play. ✴️ Always use your voice - train in commands. Have a "go on" command where the dog is free to walk and sniff by their own with loose leash. "Go on" is also a great reward! Boring walks is a great way for the dog to just do whatever IT wants (which in actuality is just spending fun time with you- if you offer it). Look at how dogs are with each other. They play and spend time with themsleves during walks and in the dog park/yard. Be one with your dog, be fun, be UNPREDICTABLE. At random times, take out a toy or start running. (You may need to train your dog not to pull you arm off when running, firstly 😅 - This is not the same training as loose leash walking, so the dog won't combine running with tense leash VS walking with loose leash. At least if the dog already has learned to not pull) If you do it correctly you'll have a dog who doesn't choke within a day(if you take at least 3-5 short walks a day that is), or week tops. Getting perfect loose leash may take more time but the worst pulling/choking will stop during the first or second day, and the rest for perfect loose leash may take more time with more stubborn breeds. Also, pulling towards a dog or something else is whole other separate training!

What are you supposed to do when your dog does not even look at you during a walk because it is so focused on the outside world/ reactivity? I could be holding a very high value treat in front of my dog and it will not care for it on a walk, meanwhile indoors the treat catches all her attention. Hard to reward good behaviour if the dog cant even focus on you or care for the treat to calm down in the first place.

Exactly. This is how you do it. Take more time than 15 mins. Do it every day until it’s great. The uturn phase is everything. This technique works for me. Just takes longer than 15 mins. It takes 15 min sessions. But it’s so fun.

Correcting pulling doesn't have to take the form of pain. I prefer stopping and standing still so the dog is unable to get to the thing they are pulling toward. Once the dog creates slack and gives attention to the handler.

Eh I like my dogs trachea uncollapsed. You can train loose leash walking on a harness just as easily as on a leash. And it's a hell of a lot more reliable when the dog loves to find heel position. My dog will litetally run to get into heel because he has such a strong reinforcement history. Combine that with pulling = not moving and i hage a dog that yas never in his life been collar popped and still walks calmly on leash in heel position (when requested) and LIKES doing it.

@@NoThankUBeQuiet not every dog can be trained positive only. some dogs can, even in more ‘crazy’ breeds like huskies, rotts, and pits, BUT IT WILL NOT WORK FOR A LOT OF DOGS. we also cannot train mine in a harness because we have encouraged her to pull against harness pressure for carting, tracking, sledding, etc. even before that, this 45 lbs dog is a powerful little thing. she happily walks on a loose leash because she gets treats when she does and gets a pop when she doesn’t. her trachea isn’t collapsed, and i don’t have to worry about her seeing something and dragging me to it. i’d like to see you try and train my grandmas reactive 90 lbs rottie on a harness instead of a prong collar. the only thing that stopped her from running across the street and ripping a dog apart was a hard pop and redirecting her to focus o. my face rather than the other dog, and receive a treat. the dogs i’ll continue to own in my life? pitbulls bred from working lines, and other working dogs? also will not be trained with a harness. i don’t know what breed you have but by your attitude towards dog training my guess is it’s a lab, a golden retriever. a pit that was submissive since it was a pup, or a show line gsd. the only time i’d use a harness is if i got a rescue dog that has throat issues. any other dog i get? they’re getting trained on a flat martingale, or a prong if they still don’t act right, combined with a good amount of treats when they do act right. some dogs may react to a harness better than a collar, but not every dog. i own a working dog who would run all day until she collapses if we let her, and then do it again the next day. don’t come in like you know the fuck you’re talking about.

Use a front lead harness. When you use a back lead harness they get all the torque. A front lead harness fixes this, or even better a gentle leader/head harness.

@@samuelcousins7229 neither work for this. as i said, we do not have the same dog. a front clip harness just has her run in circles, and a gentle leader was only useful for teaching her “left” and “right” for sledding. a prong collar does not collapse the trachea when used right and has her walk beautifully on a leash. i can hold the prong collar out and she’ll put her head right through and wait for me to clip it so we can walk. the only time she’s ever yelped with it is when my uncle (who has no business training dogs, but somehow owns a business despite him using choke collars. choke collars are unethical.) yanked her too hard, when she was startled by a sudden but slight pop, and when she was still getting used to the collar and tried to charge after a squirrel. my uncle is no longer allowed to hold her leash, and she now knows that chasing a squirrel while she’s on a collar of any sort isn’t going to do anything. i have a high energy, high prey drive dog that is an absolute freight train when she wants to be. i will have more dogs like her. i love labradors, golden retrievers, etc, but i much prefer rottweilers, pitbulls, and working line german shepards. they’re sweet enough to be kind to approved people but protective and strong enough to bite the hell out of an intruder. dogs like these are gonna be hell to train positive only. sure it can be done sometimes, but imo it’s just ineffective.

It’s classical conditioning. Basically create a positive association with the leash and collar. How? Every time you show the dog the leash and collar, give them a high value reward. Teach the dog that “leash and collar” = “good things coming”

I have never needed to punish the pulling. I used force free methods to train my Irish wolfhound. When she pulled on the leash I just stop and stand still. If she pulls we don’t move. I NEVER yanked on the lease to punish. She learned that when she pulled, we stopped. She had to walk with a loose leash if she wanted to keep going. I would always reward the behaviour I wanted but I would never use force of any kind. She walks wonderfully now! In front, behind, and she gets to sniff as much as she wants. But she no longer pulls on the leash.

If the pulling decreased you punished it. Punishment is literally adding or removing a stimulus that decreases the future probability of a behavior occurring. The method of stopping when a dog pulls is fine if it works for your dog. But please know that you absolutely are using punishment. Likely both negative and positive punishment. Negative because you removed access to the walking until the behavior changed and positive because regardless of what type of leash/collar/harness you have, the dog is feeling the additional pressure by you stopping and not allowing the pull to continue. It isn’t wrong to do this, it just isn’t positive only/force free/whatever other pretty words make people feel good about what they’re doing.

@@_amberwade Yes, it's technically 'punishment' if you want to play semantics. But the definition of punishment they use when referring to positive only/force free isn't preventing the reward, but doing something to actively harm the dog when they don't act the way you want them to - like what this video is advocating. It would be like smacking your dog if they didn't do the desired trick rather than just not rewarding them. If you wanted your children to walk nicely with you and not run away, would you take away the reward (like going to the park) if they ran off, or would you actively hurt them each time they disobeyed you? Which one is healthy consequences and which one is child abuse to you? They're both punishment after all.

Loose leash walking is not a skill you develop in minutes. It takes much longer to reliably build the skill telling people otherwise is insane to me. Sorry people your dog is gonna actually take effort you cant just flip a switch and make them behave. Heel is literally one of my dogs top 4 favorite tricks to do. When he was younger hed literally leap and do a 180 to find it when asked. People just need some patience and to be more consistent. Using tricks like this will work but id rathet my dog be happy than constantly having to do collar pops (I have trained both ways, I know what response I like better)

I couldn’t be that nice with the pull, when I got more aggressive (not slinging pooch to the other side of the state before peta hits me) he started seeing I meant business. It didn’t work when he was on harness so I put on a collar for the training and left his harness on so I can transition back to harness walking.

@@rustyshackleford9154 not fully true I was dog sitting a husky that would pull on his collar whenever he felt or wanted something he was an escape artist and had a bad pray drive I put him on my dogs ruffwear harness and he didn't pull after a few corrections he even did heel with me when he wouldn't do that for his owners ever. My blue heeler was the same pulled on everything from a prong to a flat and even slip leads ended up with a damaged throat from the prong because of how much he didn't care and we had a trainer and a vet working with us, I switched to a harness and had a lot better behaviour and engagement from him no more running to see people no more running to see every dog loose leash and even had engagement off leash as long as he had the harness on. I have had the same thing with many other dogs I have worked with that don't listen on a flat or even prong but will on a harness because they have more contact with the equipment. My Samoyed on the other hand responds best to a flat collar then a harness as she thinks it's time to play on a harness because that's what we take her hiking and adventures in the car with so she gets buckled in on the trip. It depends on the dog and what they respond best with.

I have found the u-turn method just pisses dogs off and makes them impatient, and then they won't listen at all. Maybe if the dog was already completely zoomed and walked off and pleasantly exhaused already it wouldn't hurt. This is the challenge with high energy dogs. Sometimes you need to zoom them first. Treats only work when you give treats which doesn't teach them anything, so treats do not work. It disturbed me that you said "punish pulling" which is what people do that really screws up dogs, and I have seen really good dogs really screwed up from bad leash training. NEVER punish, but TEACH the dog what you want him to do and be really patient and firm. Try to create an understanding and a communication with your dog. Use all the verbal and physical cues you can think of to communicate this to your dog with compassion. Stay centered and calm yourself. Have patience. Dogs like silence, too, and it is hard for you to focus if you are yacking too much, so don't get over-verbal, rather visualize, try being a dog psychic to get your intentions through to your dog. Try hard not to hurt your dog. (This is easy w/puppies, not so much with dogs that have already gone very wrong and are in the Dog Daddy or red zone.) The slack leash reward combined with your happiness with the dog is much more effective than either punishment or treats, once you get the dog where you want him to be. So, work towards a slack leash: focus on slack leash.

Depends on the dog my blue heeler pulled on everything but a harness he even damaged his throat pulling so hard on the prong as a young dog we switched him to a harness when he was older and had loose leash walking no problems he listened better and looked to us more and even was better off leash. My Samoyed thinks it's play time with a harness on because we use it to strap her in the car so she thinks we are going to a fun place she walks well on a normal flat collar it's all about dog preference.

What about using a retractable leash? We live in an apartment and have to walk our dog for his bathroom time. It’s not about me needing to get steps so how do I let him sniff and pee and poop as needed on a short leash? Also, there are times I need him to heel on my left AND right, so how do you teach the dog to differentiate which side they need to be on, when they need to be close, and when they need to return to my side?

You can ask the dog to seat and then use a release word like "ok" so the dog knows he can go around and do their business, once you want them back, you can call them back and treat for the recall. I used luring to teach left and right once the dog moves easily from your left to your right you can add the word and say "left/right" and immediately reward with a treat once the dog moved to your left/right (doing this all while walking or standing still), it worked for me.

@moonmoon there’s a reason they are not useful in the long run and a R+ foundation should be established as it trickles to all other aspects of training where they retain knowledge in the long run and not use tools that cause pain. I’m all for science based training and not short term outdated methods where they aren’t actually learning but being inhibited

@@valerieeno3799 Using all 4 quadrants of operant conditioning is sciences based training…. These methods are scientifically proven to work, an no one argues that. But I assume you are referring to “The Science” touted by many R+ only trainers to “prove” that using a balanced methodology is bad…. I’ve read many of those papers, and sorry, almost all are just crappy surveys or random dog walkers, non- professionals, or so full of uncontrolled variables to make them worthless. If this is truly “Science based” can you point to a well written paper that clearly stated that the proper use of a prong collar CAUSES bad behavior? Some of these surveys say there is a correlation, but then also state the obvious, that they can NOT demonstrate cause

Fathers dog is 18lbs and 14 inches high. He pulls and has already made me sprain my ankle. He’s fast and gets underfoot. Father doesn’t want him on neck collar so he’s on a harness. The dog doesnt care about correction with a body harness. I’m at a loss to stop the pulling, barking, just doing what’ve the wants on a leash.

@@zachsheffield1325That’s not a good analogy because paddling hurts and has been proven to be ineffective. The snap back on the leash however is a method to get the dog to pay attention like a push on the shoulder when you’re spaced out.

You don't need punishment you need to be consistent and teach your dog that he comes nowhere if there is leash pressure! Then you need to do this everyday for months.

“Teaching” = using reinforcement and punishment to increase or decrease current behaviors or to shape new ones. “Going nowhere if there is leash pressure” is negative punishment. Remove access to walk to decrease pulling.

Prong collars do work in the moment, but it only prevents pulling due to discomfort; it doesn’t teach the dog the proper desired behavior you want. The same with e-collars. The moment either collar comes off, the dog will almost always revert to the default undesirable behavior. These are tools that manage but do not solve the issue!

What if you have a freak on a leash who won’t stop pulling and was found in the wild before you adopted him so now he’s used to doing what he wants but since he can’t anymore he gets mad at you and will do good if you have a prong collar but as soon as you give him a bit of slack he goes right back into scurry mode even though you reward his good behaviour and punish the bad and what if I’m going crazy I love my dog so much but he can be so draining and please help lol

From what it sounds like the issue is your dog doesn’t fully understand leash pressure and needs more engagement with you. If your dog doesn’t know that pressure means to give in and go a certain way then it won’t work. Also make sure you start in low distraction environments. Don’t try to do this on a normal walk you will fail. Instead practice in your yard or driveway first then slowly move further away when your dog masters that environment.

@MoonMoon thanks for the response. I really appreciate it. When I walk him in the house, he doesn't ever pull. He walks behind me and allowes me to lead and knows he should leave things. When we're in the yard, he's okay too. He doesn't really pull and engages when I get his attention. But as soon as we're in a new place, his engagement is completely gone. He'll listen for a bit, then just pulls and tugs. It's like his prey drive just takes over and there's no stopping that drive.

​@@tuszajnojneeg0052 my young dog is much the same in new environments I normally have to plant my feet let her pull for a bit and when she realizes she's not going anywhere with that behaviour she calms down and looks around and starts to act better and look at me when it comes to why we are not moving. Then I will start to move forward if the behaviour starts again we stop all over again she has started to realise it gets her no where she's 8 months now and a Samoyed they are notoriously hard to leash train because of their breeds original purpose which is herding, sled dogs as well as all round guardians in harsh climates so very stubborn.

Not true at all. Food aggression can be caused by not teaching the dog boundaries not by giving them a reward. Food aggression can be taught out by rewarding the dog with more food instead of taking it away.

Mate, the amount of force he used there was miniscule to say the least. It's a brief, short negative reinforcement technique so the dog knows that behaviour won't be rewarded. You see how he's mostly using positive reinforcement via giving the dog treats? This is the most efficient way to train your dog. Now if he was just tugging on his dogs collar and not rewarding the dog when the dog does what he wants, than you'd have a case. It's more dangerous to have an untrained dog on a lead.

Imagine a dog on a "gentle" leader running off and reaching the end of the line? Imagine that neck snapping. Dogs hate gentle leaders, I as a trainer hate them too. Torture devices. Imagine that same dog doing the same thing on a flat collar? Snap says trachea. You want something that teaches dogs the meaning of leash pressure without damaging the dog. A prong or slip lead sits above the trachea and right behind the ears, and is therefore much safer even though the prong looks like a medieval torture device. Press against you neck with a 10 fingers right below the chin all the way back untol youve completed a circel, and then grab your trachea and pull it backwards. You're going to prefer option 1.

He was right up until he uses a leash pop for punishment. There is never a need to use positive punishment, instead use negative punishment.
