Very nice video.. you provide al lot of information! My dog is just like that but I cant let him offleash in the forest. To high prey drive and he wont listen anymore when he sees a deer. Do you have any training tips/exercises to control prey drive? I saw your video when you toss the ball and the dog stays in place. Brownie also stays in place with the 'stay' command. Also with toys. But not when there is deer... I see the deer maybe 3-4 times a year so I can't train with them but thats to much to risk offleash walking. I love trailrunning so it would be awesome if I can make him stay or in heel position when we spot something.

Good in theory but uour try this with a chihuahua. They are stubborn beyond belief and would rather starve than eat something they don't want to eat. Plus they have a high chance of hypoglycemia and because they're so small if they go too long between meals they can have seizures and all sorts of fun complications.

I don’t want my dog leading me so he doesn’t get the entire 6 feet constantly but he can also heel in a loose leash position as well. I always enjoy these videos and have learned a ton. Train your dog to loose leash walk and keep focused on you before walking in this way

I only started your program (although I’ve watched many of your videos) and I immediately realized marking is one of the highest rewards for my dog. He will hold his pee (even though we have a back yard) as long as possible, so he can mark as many spots as he can on our walk (also a minimum of 20 times). He will eventually use the bathroom in the backyard if he has to and not pee in the house, but he absolutely loves marking the neighborhood - only releasing just enough to have more for other spots. I’m keeping that in mind when it comes to our training. (“We don’t decide what is rewarding for our pets”). Thanks for all your knowledge, I thought I knew some basics but you have really helped me get our training to the next level.

Hi Miles, I've been making my way through your fantastic youtube videos and I'm subscribed to your emails and considering buying your online programme. The big question I have is...can I apply the same theory using slightly different tools? Specifically: a sound/vibration collar instead of ecollar, and a martingale collar instead of prong? I know these are softer signals but my partner isn't comfortable with the shock/prong so I'm looking for a decent alternative.

I didn't see any reactivity. You went straight to step six. Where was the lunging and absolute freakout? Another thing about these videos is, the dog already has a lot of training. I think it would be good to point out that before you can address reactivity you have to get the basics down.

When a dog is deeply ingrained in aggressive or hyperactive behavior, it can feel like traditional methods like food or positive reinforcement alone aren’t enough to regain control. In such situations, I think a combination of approaches can help: Management first: Before addressing the behavior itself, it's important to manage the environment to prevent escalation. This means avoiding situations where the dog can rehearse undesirable behaviors. Crate training, safe spaces, or controlled walks with appropriate gear (e.g., a prong collar or a head halter) can be helpful in safely managing out-of-control dogs. Structured routines and boundaries: Clear, consistent boundaries can be grounding for an anxious or aggressive dog. This includes setting up a predictable daily routine for feeding, walks, training, and rest. It helps the dog understand that they don't have to act aggressively to get what they need. Focus on impulse control: Building up impulse control can be key. You might use techniques like "place" training, where the dog learns to settle in a specific area until given the release cue. This can help the dog learn to focus and de-escalate. Counter-conditioning: If the dog has a specific trigger for aggression (e.g., other dogs, strangers), working on desensitizing them to these triggers while pairing the trigger with positive experiences can shift the emotional response over time. It may not involve food immediately, but something else rewarding-like a favorite toy or praise-could help build positive associations. Leash pressure and release techniques: These can be helpful to regain attention, especially with dogs who have a lot of built-up energy or aggression. The goal is to use light pressure to help the dog understand boundaries and stop certain behaviors, followed by release once the dog relaxes. This is not punishment but a way to provide clarity to the dog.

Miles. My dog currently being trained with an E collar, and would react to other dogs. The other day I took him to the dog park. We stayed outside for awhile. Finally I put him on a long leash and we went in. To my amazement there was no reactivity. I let him engage with other dogs. No problem. I took off the leash, he goes freely to other dogs, no problem. I recall him, no problem. He's a lot happier and stress free. All he wanted to do was go play with other dogs. Now we go on walks with a long leash if we're not at the park. Our walks are now a lot more pleasant.

Its interesting because the little yelps when he gets a stim are because hes so aroused. I have a gsd who is literally the same dog. Arousal level and the way he acts and interacts with the world. Can handle a correction until hes really aroused then you get the little yelp.

Is it in a dogs nature to be reactive to other dogs and my definition of reactive is once they see a dog they go in the curious mode w there ears perked and wanting to go and meet the dog not in a agressive. My rott didn’t have other dogs to play w and if he saw a dog he’s make a cry type noise and want to meet them bad

Please stop using a neck collar only, instead of a harness. The risk of throat, trachea (windpipe) collapse, and thyroid gland injuries, to name a few, is high when pulling on a dog collar. Also, muscle strain and vertebrae damage. Plus, would you want to have your own neck tugged at or yanked on? My daughter is an Emergency/Critical Care veterinary doctor, and sees the results of pet owners who don’t use harnesses.

Try changing direction every three steps until the dog doesn't recognize or know that you are going in any direction, and he's just walking, he has stopped predicting and is just following.
