use a string to set the perimeters of your posts at the bottom -- the post should be at the center of the hole(been used since the building of the peramids) -- at the top of the posts once they are set in concrete put a nail at the height where you want the truss to rest then run a string to the next post with a line level at the middle of the string --when the bubble is in the middle put a mark on your post where your string is then attach the string where that nail is -- then do the same all around the building to each post -- take a square and mark a line on each post -- cut off each post at the mark and they are all perfectly level all the way around -- don't forget the 3,4,5 rule for squaring the building -- it works on anything from a bird house to a skyscraper -- keep it up your doing great

It is immensely helpful to stand a board ( 2x6 x 5ft or similar) in the back of the hole before sliding in the post. This prevents the post from collapsing the hole edge and is much safer than risking the post 'kicking' your helper.

I'm not sure how i missed this project Hank. You must've completed this job about the same time I subscribed to your channel. Anywho I'm glad i found it, as I'm needing a pole barn to store my tractor implements. I hope to get started building this spring. Thanks Hank
@HamiltonvilleFarm4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was fun too build, but if I had to do it over again, I wouldn't have went with the taller roof. We thought we were gonna park a RV under it,but turns out the slide outs would hit the post, so it doesn't work for a camper like we thought. Oh well,such is life.

The hole next to the tree is going to mess with the building forever. Up north you have another factor posts need to be 40” deep frost line.

Nice information and thank you for sharing! I'm currently designing my building, I'm debating if I should do metal building or pole barn building. Question: what type of wood you use and size? Did you consider Column footing? Are you worried rotting wood post?
@HamiltonvilleFarm4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike. 1. We used pressure treated wood for the posts and in treated wood for the stringers. 2. It's hard to get a concrete guy out here for such a small job. We live in the sticks so it would have been super expensive. 3. Not really worried about the wood,but is something we will keep an eye on and if we see it needing repaired we'll fix it. 👍
@danamiller90803 жыл бұрын
use pressure treated wood. correct me if I'm wrong for wood to rot it needs three factors oxygen moisture and temperature...so it rots in the rainy warm summer months if exposed to all 3 elements ...

It's called the Pythagorean theorem so you are correct... I find it easier to use that method as well instead of the equal diagonal measurements method. C*2=A*2+B*2 I noticed that you're pole is awful close to that other building... And with all due respect you should have cut down that tree having that pole that close to the tree it may either kill the tree or the tree is going to grow and the roots are going to disturb your pole and the concrete floor and the building in that corner you never have a tree that close to any building.

Using wood posts, even pressure treated is like starting a timer for destruction. Seems like a lot of work and money for something that will rot and collapse in 10 years maximum. Why not invest in steel posts?
@HamiltonvilleFarm3 жыл бұрын
Because the 100 year old buildings here with wooden posts disagree with your statement.
