Hank, If the circuit for reverse functions and you know which solenoid engages forward, swap the wiring and verify that forward is mechanically functioning. If it will engage and move forward, you’ll know for an absolute fact that it’s electrical. Not to restate the obvious, but the exposed wiring will continue to be a problem, even after the repairs are made. All else fails, call the local dealer and get a service tech to check it out. They have all the equipment to test and verify issues. May be expensive, but time isn’t free, even if it’s your own.They may even have a TC that would talk you through a couple of tests and checks in lieu of sending a field tech. Stay safe and keep up the good work!

Exciting stuff ! You're very close to the solution so don't loose heart or faith ! Keep at it ! Current flowing through the right coils/solenoids should shift the forward valve. Maybe jackup the tractor so just the tires will spin while you try energizing different coils with a power probe or something external.

ok, let me help you out. the solenoid is nothing more then a magnet. when constant power is applied it will pull up a rod that engages the trans. so first you need to insure the solenoid is working. you can do that buy fixing the wire and then pull the cover off and take out the new part. pug it in. then turn the switch on to drive. check the solenoid with a metal object(screw driver). if it holds it then your issue is the rod in the trans. soak the shaft and try using a strong magnet to pull the shaft up and down till it's freed up. if a machine sits for some time moister can cause some rust. once its free just use some oil in the shaft hole to get it lubricated. you might have to soak the rod with penitrating oil for a few days.

G'day Hank, don't know if you have a multimeter or not but you can pick one up fairly cheap. You can measure the resistance of those solenoids without removing them and compare the reading of the suspect one with the others. Also you can measure the voltage on those bare wires when you shift the levers or switches. Cheers from Robbo
@lordmetal38423 жыл бұрын
Check the vent on top of the transmission. You can see it from the left side of the engine compartment looking back towards the transmission (looking over top of the starter). Make sure that is clear. The 3 solenoids on the top left of the transmission are for the MFWD (if used), Diff lock and the Park Brake. The transmission control solenoids are under the top cover of the transmission control valve which is mounted on the top backside of the transmission. Seldom do those solenoids go bad (not to say they don't go bad sometimes). Most likely you have an FNR shifter problem. That was a common problem with those machines. You want to have it tested to be sure, they are expensive. If the shifter is OK then you may need to get your dealer to check amps at the fuse box for the transmission circuit to verify it is doing what it needs to be doing electrically. You would also have to have pressures checked to check mechanical function.

Hey hank I have been following this series, I can't belive this has been in the works now for a yr . Wow You have to correct the wire issue Then you can double check the location of those solenoids. Hank, We had quite a few of the John Deere backhoes and I don’t recall ever seeing your issue with any of the other JD backhoes that was in our fleet. I would try to get a replacement pigtail where you would have a better plug and wiring to work with. I’m kind of curious how the older model JD backhoes were configured compared to the G that you have as far as the forward reverse shift. That machine is definitely worth the money that it would take to get it repaired. Personally I think that the newer equipment has too much electronic garbage to screw up.

Thanks for the heart on my wiring harness comment. Over the years I worked on too many old "junk" tractors backhoes and dozers to remember. On some the harness was dirt cheap. Others were fairly expensive. But having a good harness saved me soooo many hours on trouble shooting: especially on "newer" junk I bought to fix and flip or use. Have also done simple wire replacement to harness's with just a little damage,usually mice or overheated wires.Worse I saw was on a JD 450J dozer at a local JD construction shop. They had the cab off and every pirce of sheetmetal removed. What's up with that I asked. Tech said they had a dead short that killed the dozer.$10,000.00+ parts and labor repair:for mouse damage.

Taking a solenoid out, I would check the resistance (in ohms)of the one removed, and the one put in new. Are they the same? If so, then send the new one back. In the electrical trade we call this a poke and hope strategy, by not getting the manual and just throwing good money to bad. Work the logic. It Biggin has a logic, then as a troubleshooter, there has to be a process of elimination. Swapping solenoids is a great idea if they measure the same in their respective resistances. At least it keeps moving thru a process. Document what you find as you go along. Check each device, chase the wire, insure all cut wires from where they come and go, and document that and see what aligns to the forward operation. Good luck….

Have a friend with the same problem. Checked FNR switch at the column. You can unplug the switch without removing it. The wires are labeled ABCD at the plug from the switch. His contacts were good. Checked it at the plug to the Solenoid it too is lanes. Had 12 volts on both F. And R. Solenoid was rebuilt. Still the same problem. The single solenoid is to pause pulling when button is pushed. Didn’t rebuild that one. Was told the clutches could be messed up or the pump in reversal unit could be bad. No luck here either! Hope you find the problem!

Well you tried, I'd say as a guy that fixes farm equipment for a living. Anything more modern like this get the manual before you start whether it's a paper copy or good quality cd. If a guy brings me a tractor with transmission issues I'm not touching it without reading first. I've read some manuals and walked away, I've got one here for a tractors like a phone book for just the transmission! That parts cannon or diagnostic time lost over something stupid thats in the book in a diagnostic flow chart could pay for the book, against a day and gain nothing or where you are at now. somewhere on that transmission there is going to be test ports for pressures and things if you guess getting the electrics right and it still don't work, you'll need to figure that out as well. Hope you've already fixed it, thanks for sharing the adventure. Take care.

Surely there's got to be some John Deere techs watching. Lol. What about safety switches like a neutral switch that maybe is grounding out preventing it from going forward .❓❓❓ When you shift it into forward, a command is sent from the computer to engage the transmission....something is interfering with that signal. In the old days, these were all mechanical, but in this machine I figure the shift lever is just a switch. I would follow from the shift lever back to the switch that engages the transmission, right before the solenoid that you just replaced.....in other words, what is between the shift lever and the solenoid, because now we know it's not the solenoid obviously. Anyway, that's my advice. 😊 Keep us posted Hank! Good luck!

Hi Hank. I know that you began this journey by replacing the ECU module on the backhoe because the original one was damaged. I also saw in one of the first videos on this machine that you replaced all of the fuses. I’m trying to think what could be causing the tractor to only move backwards but not forwards. Remember when you first got the backhoe to run under its own power, Josey ran a hot wire to the ECU to get the proper voltage to the system but then the backhoe thought that someone was trying to steal it so it wouldn’t move. I also remember that when you found this machine in the woods the fuse panel was exposed to the weather. Do you remember the reasoning why this backhoe was abandoned originally? You said in the 1st video of this series that it just quit and that’s where it sat for all those years until you got in on the trailer and back to your place. Let me know what you think.

I guess only thing you didn't check is that selector on the steering column. When you switch it to back it works, so maybe contacts in it doesn't work or broken for forward or wiring is the problem. Pull that shifter out and check it with multimeter for continuity (a test light would be more helpful too cuz then you can see if signal goes to there or not) and make sure it is working at 1st place. Always start with simple ones first, KISS rule mostly works well smiles. Chase that circuit from column to the selenoids. Backward works cuz selector says "work" to that selenoid, but forward is not so your problem is there somewhere inbetween, obviously hydraulic circuit works fine cuz you are able to ride it backwards. Probably you will solve this puzzle in very short time :)
