Earnie Shavers was without question the hardest puncher in heavyweight history according to litterally everyone he ever laid a hand on. In the golden era of heavyweight boxing Earnie Shavers power was talked about as something a bit beyond human.

Ali was gifted a decision against earnie in 1977 because shavers won in most observer's view - earnie wasn't as successful against holmes first time as he had been with Ali but was so unlucky being a punch away from taking the title from holmes 2nd fight and against a lesser champion would surely have won - shows how skilled Larry was when he had to be to pull himself back from the brink of defeat - shavers will never be forgotten for what he almost achieved twice and he's one of the very best heavyweights that came within an ace of lifting the title but ultimately fell a tiny bit short - sadly earnie checked out recently but nobody should forget what he tried to do - a real honest boxer with the hammer of thor in both hands who was real painful trouble for any opponent in any era !!

I knew Earnie Shavers from the gyms in the Akron Canton area. I had an opportunity to spar with him once just before he left for training camp in New York for the Ali fight. Earnie was just fooling around hitting us with an open glove and pretty much arm punching because I was only a welterweight then. Still when Earnie hit you you got that sinking feeling and you could feel it in your toes. Earnie was a great guy everyone liked him. RIP

Puncher of The Century Earnie Shavers is known for being the hardest puncher in Heavyweight boxing history. He scored 69 knockout wins, including 23 in the first round. So powerful, both Joe Frazier and George Foreman told boxing writer Jerry Eisenberg they would never fight Shavers. Real fighters knew enough to avoid him. His incredible one punch power made him more than dangerous. George Foreman told him personally when Earnie lobbied for a fight, "hell no." Joe Frazier told Shavers bluntly when Shavers asked him for a shot, "No way, Earnie.” Hall of Fame and all time greats Ali and Holmes both said Shavers power, especially his one punch power, was simply unrivaled. But they, and others, also said a lot more.. Angelo Dundee, the great trainer, said "Earnie wasn't really a good boxer, but God, his power was amazing." Muhammad Ali said after his match with Shavers, "Earnie hit me so hard, he shook my kinfolk back in Africa" And when fighters had to meet him, they left in awe. Tex Cobb said "Earnie could punch you in the neck with his right hand and break your ankle." He also said, "if a man hit any harder than Earnie I'd shoot him." Ron Lyle: "Hey man, that's the hardest I've ever been hit in my life. And George Foreman could punch, but none of them could hit like Earnie Shavers did. When he hit you, the lights went out. I can laugh about it now, but at the time it wasn't funny." Larry Holmes, comparing Shavers to Tyson, said "Earnie hit me harder than any other fighter, including Mike Tyson. He hit me and I was face down on the canvas hearing saxophonist Jimmy Tillis." Jimmy Young, who was knocked cold by Shavers in his first fight, but survived the second, said "I was not gonna get tagged by him again, no sir!" Nor were fighters and trainers the only ones who saw and marveled at Shavers sheer overwhelming power. Hall of Fame sports journalist Jerry Izenberg said of Shavers, "rarely did Earnie hit anyone below the neck; he was a headhunter and a good one. For me, Shavers was the greatest one-punch hitter I have ever seen." "However, while Shavers struck serious fear into his opponents, such freakishly big hitting power had its drawbacks for the man himself," said Kenny Rainford. “Being such a big puncher actually hurt my career,” says Shavers. “I relied on my power too much. I wish I’d had trainers that could have taught me more about combination punches." “I used to gas out in five or six rounds because I put that much effort into my punches and it was impossible to punch for an entire fight without tiring out." In the years that followed, Rainford met Ali and asked him about the famous fight with Shavers. “I can not remember the last round of our fight,” Ali admitted. “He hit me so hard that for fourteenth round, I was on autopilot. I can’t remember a thing. When I’ve watched the fight back, and see the way I rallied in the fifteenth round, I was doing that off memory.” Shavers reigned down on Ali with 266 punches that night. Afterwards, Rainford claims, the New York commission stated Ali would never fight in New York again after doctors discovered tears on his brain. Eig's study, conducted by Arizona State speech scientists Visar Berisha and Julie Liss found that Ali's speech slowed by 16 percent after a 15-round bout with Ernie Shavers in 1977. Shavers, a brawler, landed 266 punches throughout the fight. If one fight had to be picked, Ernie Shavers inflicted the most damage. Shavers is directly responsibly for the early retirements of Ron Asher, Frank Smith, Bunky Akins, Bill McMurray, Harold Carter, Eddie Parotte and Larry Sims, all of whom he knocked out and never fought again. How many losses did the Best Heavyweight Champions of all time have: Ali 5,, Foreman 5,, Holmes 6,, Lewis 2,, Louis 3,, Tyson 6,, Frazier 4,, Holyfield 10,, Vitali 2,, Wladimir 5,, Liston 4,, Bowe 1,, Norton 7,, Tunney 1,, Dempsey 6,, SHOW ME A HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION WITHOUT A LOSS AND I'LL SHOW YOU A FIGHTER THAT FOUGHT A LOT OF NOBODIES -- Lennox Lewis

My favorite Ernie Shavers story is that while working on Rocky III, Stallone asked him to give him a proper shot ... in the version I heard Stallone had his guard up and Ernie punched him on his elbow driving it into his ribs dropping him. In another version Ernie gives him a liver shot, which I don't buy, Ernie is smart enough to know not to put the guy paying the cheques into hospital. Punching his arm was the smart way to demonstrate his power without risking damage to the star. Respect to all.

About 3 weeks later in the mail came a postcard from Earnie with him on the front that said? To Frankie, from the next Champ. I became and still am a Shavers fan. I still cant believe Holmes got up from that punch. That punch would kill a average man. Literally Kill them. Today? Earnie would own the Heavyweight Division. He had an exceptional ability to recover from being hurt really quickly, and it seemed like accumulated damage didn’t happen to him. If he got hurt, he recovered like 15 seconds later and was back in the fight as if nothing happened. Even as an old man. Only time it failed him was Tyson. Tyson Fury is the modern day version of this ability.

He was devastating against B and C fighters, but Deontay only beat 1 world champion and that dude was a paper champion. He collected a vacated title after Vitali Klitscho retired. Tyson Fury has only beaten 2 world champions and has 2 title defenses in a 15-year career. Shit even Deontay had 10 title defenses and AJ had 9. Tyson Fury is only taking the fight with AJ now that he's weak.

This is an extraordinary work , perhaps the best on this artist. The power of nature over nurture, a story of man with a heart who find himself in jail . Where he kept his discipline and mind intact . This example plus making work the extraordinary gifts is very inspiring tale for all those who have some kind of misfortune or disadvantage. Real strength of the mind is indeed transforming your negatives into positive. Thoroughly enjoyed all the fellow comments. A lot to learn from sports enthusiasts.

The secret to Muhammad Ali's success was the body he was born with, and his chin. For some reason Muhammad Ali was extremely hard to knock out. Even the most powerful punches in boxing didn't knock him out. Earnie tore holes in Ali's brain, and Ail didn't fall. So his secret to success was absorbing punishment, tiring his opponents out and then using his Wayne Gretzky equivalent boxing skills to win points. That's not the strategy my heroes take. Earnie is my hero because he's a lion, if it wasn't for the point system Ernie won that fight because he beat the living f*** out of Muhammad Ali

Earnie Shavers indeed was a VERY dangerous big man who had KO power in both his fists. And it is with right reasons many top heavyweights was concerned to fight him. Both Larry Holmes & Mohammad Ali who both had the plan how to out-box Shavers still could not escape from getting hits that took them both down for count. But...Shavers was skill-wise very limited and had serious stamina issues in later rounds. Also Shavers had a great heart, but not a physical chin that matched it! Sad we never got "Big" George Foreman vs. Earnie Shavers, but Foreman have openly said that; "If I had been forced to fight him when I was the champion, I would have had no other option but to fight him, but I'm glad I never had to fight him. The man could truly hurt you and I'm glad I did not have to taste that as Ron Lyle & Gerry Cooney did land hurting bombs. Lule's punches was like a horse-kick and I have a ranch so i know how bad a horse-kick is". Considering Shavers was KO'd in 3rd round against Lyle and Foreman bested Lyle, I have no reason to believe Shavers would have defeated Foreman, but non the less he would have landed some hurting bombs before going down. In a brutal war, Foreman was just to big, to strong and to hard hitting to go down as Foreman had a matching mentality that he would rather die in the ring then let himself get knocked-out or muscled-out by his opponent. Foreman was no fool though and prefered not to go into slugging wars and rather have a distance to hi sopponent and use his giant arms to position his opponents - something he rarley gets credit for is his classic defensive skills.

@@geraldfriend256 Amen!!! In a pute power contest where both each-other goes to-to-toe, that is a given victory for Foreman as he would tank you down. Foreman had many tools, but to defeat him you really had to "box" him, use difficult angles and use the ring size to your advantage with smooth movement and move in & out very fast. I tall boxer with reach who had all this was a nightmare for Foreman to take on as Foreman would struggle to get a lock-on.

@geraldfriend256 Жыл бұрын
@@WarioSaysSo Foreman had great guard manipulation and would simply shove em back if they got in on him. Frazier s nightmare matchup. Makes me believe prime George outdogs prime Tyson. He would also punch to the chest and arms like Marciano did, and if those guys are hitting you in the arms, it is just like leg kicks in mma.Wears you out.Also parallels Rocky in that he was not a great pugilist in any orthodox way, but had a definite method to it and worked.

What an interesting video because its subject is so interesting. I could see the tremendous power of his (Ernie Shavers) punches in that video , and the narrator summed this up in very good words towards the end of it with his opinion about what power punchers were in themselves : no amount of push ups will make you a power puncher , a power puncher is born , not made .

Shavers was a lethal hitter. The scary thing about Foreman though was how slow he would hit you. Shavers' hands weren't as fast as Tyson's but he did have fast shots. Big George just had unreal power. You even look at when old George would fight in the 90's, he just looked like he was fly swatting at times. But if one of those swats caught you it was lights out!
@Eric..Cartman

Earnie had the hardest one punch, that's his right hand. Foreman had lethal power in both hands. Foreman was one of a kind athlete. Granite chin, clumsy hands but scary power and built like a bull. He still shows no sign of slurry speech.
@SonnyK248
@SonnyK248 Жыл бұрын
@@Eric..Cartman He was built like a bull but he was also deceptively not that big. You just look at the tale of the tape for the Rumble in the Jungle when he faced Ali who was never known as a monster by any stretch. Height both 6'3. Weight, George was 220 Ali was 212. Ali had a 2 inch reach advantage. Ali had 15 inch biceps to George's 16 inch. Both had 43 inch chests. George had a 14 inch forearm to Ali's 13.5. Ali's thighs were an inch bigger, Ali's fists were half an inch bigger and their calf's were the same size. So we're talking about two guys who are basically the same size. I just think George's presence and his destructive power made him look like a god damn dragon in the ring!
@Eric..Cartman
@Eric..Cartman Жыл бұрын
@@SonnyK248 exactly. I wasn't talking about his size. It was about his toughness, power and presence. Anthony Joshua is BIG compared to Foreman but if both faced in ring, Joshua would look like a journeyman in the presence of Foreman.

@Kyle-tt9gj Norton vs earn ken took mutiple shots in 1st just standing there in the corner Larry the 2nd toughest person earn fought 1st round,earn catches him with a right they even say it was the same shot that caught ali,earn was hurt not in danger then earn catches him 2 times after 1 was clean then the next grazed,Larry shock it off easy,earn keeps hitting him with weak shots hoping to land his best punch his right,the weak shots don't seem to do much damage 2nd right not long after it start earn catches him with his cross clearly clean yes hard,Larry wasn't in trouble at all,then Larry gets caught agian clean wasnt very hurt,these are only examples I can name many more from mutiple matches As I said it's no match where the average or big name person even when bruno wasn't fully loaded where he just was throwing weak shots even,where a person didn't feel those,it isn't any match where the average person just brawled with him face to face and tanked his shots,it's no match where earn fought a man as tough as oliv who tanked brunos legendary jab loaded, So no earn didn't hit close to as hard you're going off of some myth created years ago by people who were lhw and who wasnt that tough and who wasn't used to people who were heavy and with good tech, I dont like bruno style never have and I don't like earn but I can clearly see bruno shots as I explained were very higher than overrated earn it's very easy to see what I said isn't madeup as I have no reason to make it up Earn power just wasn't the same not when I gave you even him just throwing weak shots wasn't the same as weak shots thrown by bruno Also giving you how the average person didn't even brawl with bruno but they could with earn, very obviously the person wasnt willing to go toe to toe face to face cause they know they would be koed You can't go off of some record or quotes,you have to go off of actually reaction to punches as I do,and earn doesn't crack top 20 hardest hitters Mutiple people leave out how Larry took mutiple shots from earn loaded and weak shots they always talk about that shot that dropped him,what about all the others?,no way would Larry be able to tank bruno I know this for a fact,not when oliv who was real tough who was used to being hit by people with way better tech and who was heavier on average couldn't

Why you people still hype that drop is odd,you're so slow what about the mutiple shots Larry took before that?,earn power is way overrated,could Larry had tanked bruno/mercer not only where these guys way more tech but heavier and hit way harder on average,it's no match where people took as many clean shots from those guys or others in the same era as the average earn opponent,those 2 didn't even get brawled with on average cause they hit so hard It's even stats I read that shows earn ko ratio vs people above 215lbs is like 46% whereas wlad is almost 90% even wlad in his top 10 pro matches is way more impressive with his fluidity and angles used and power that nobody in 70s showed
