Thanks so much for the interviews. I really appreciate getting to learn more about the boat from a very thoughtful owner. Like all Chris White designs, the Hammerhead 54 seems excellent. 7:31 The dual preventer system is similar to the dual mainsheet system Balance Catamarans is using, and I think they borrowed it from a French design. (It's different from German dual mainsheets.) With it, it's possible to adjust angle of attack, twist and sail shape in general in great detail. I think it's an excellent way to control a mainsail, and arguably better than a single mainsheet and traveller. It also has an inherent preventer function to keep the boom under positive control at all times.

The reason you have great crew (especially green crew) is because you are a good skipper and a good teacher!

🤔 What were the considerations with not utilizing a wind vane, to supplement the autopilot? I imagine that with this yacht’s high speed that hydro-generation could be practical in addition to the usual wind or solar solutions. Sailing Jupiter channel built an aluminum performance catamaran in the Philippines 🇵🇭 which seems “bulletproof”. The thought of hitting anything at >20 kts (especially at night) presents significant risk of personal injury as well as damage but it must be thrilling to sail at those speeds (I’d probably sleep with my feet towards the bow 🤣). I’ve never been attracted to cats because of their poor upwind performance, but can see how the trimaran fixes that issue. The tendency for the windward ama to hover seems to offer great sailing advantages while also providing ready buoyancy during the unexpected. Thanks for an very experienced and informative talk. 👍😎

I do Boat Electrics for a living. I only work with the owner's and explain what I am doing and the reasons for it. If at all possible I let them do the work. People that plan to do extensive cruising really appreciate the lessons.

10:40 Rule #1 of Boats: "Stay in the boat." Upside down and on it still counts. It's a HECK of a lot easier for search and rescue to find a 50x30 swamped trimaran from the air than a little life raft. (Rule #2: "Keep the water outside", and Rule #3: "Never let the boat touch anything else" will get more elucidation as conversation merits.)

John, wherever you might be, thank you for the idea of running the lifeline below the wings... I have been a multihull fan for years and hope to retire to a trimaran. I see Avalanche is for sale, but she is 100-150k out of my limited budget.

I keep my little yacht in Pwllheli, North Wales. We have one of these yachts in the marina, owned by Kirk, from Bermuda. I bet John knows him. Very impressive vessel I've yet to see inside. There are only three of these 54's in existence. Kirk is trying to sell his for about £300k, quite a bargain! If you Google Earth Pwllheli, you will see Kirk's tri on the mud.

When he talks about learning the boat, and he is asked about getting another boat... It is like you asked him if he would dump his wife for a brand new, prettier, sexier, wife... and he just looks around with love in his eyes, and he plays it off. Flaws and all - Not even a consideration... it never crossed his mind.

Would a wind vane work on this boat?
@markthomasson5077
@markthomasson5077 4 ай бұрын
Multihulls go too fast, so sailing to apparent wind, so wind vanes don’t work to well. …unless you slow right down. What does work is connecting the autopilot to a servo paddle (bottom part of the self steering mechanism)

I have seen where and what condition this boat ended up in not more that 4 year later. The new owner estimated that the boat hadn't seen proper maintenance for over 10 years (cut off wires, electrical shorts etc...) , so I am taking everything this skipper says with a MASSIVE grain of salt.
