Hammerhead Shark Tows Me Miles Offshore! | Kayak Fishing La Jolla During El Nino 2015

During a kayak fishing trip off La Jolla, I encountered a large hammerhead shark. I hooked the shark and it towed me quite a ways offshore. It was safely released.
I was targeting tuna and dorado on this trip, but the hammerheads were thick back then and very aggressive. The shark stayed and circled my kayak after I unhooked it.

Another AWESOME video, Chris. I just love that feeling when they start towing you. You wind as much line back as possible and the kayak is just putting out a wake going forward as if it had a outboard attached. It's amazing how fast the kayak can get towed. I've had that experience with large Makos and large Threshers. The Hammerhead, I hooked 5 times on the same day. First time was trolling a large Rapala Greenback mac, fought it for 15 minutes, before he broke off my 40 lb fluorocarbon leader and left with my Rapala. a few hours later, he got my flylined greenback and was on for about 3 minutes before breaking off. The next 3 time all within 30 minutes, he had already figured out all he had to do was roll and thrash and the leader would just break off. Those last few time he wasn't on even 30 second. At the point I went in, because I figures it was a lost cause to keep trying to fish. The power of those large sharks is awesome and scary. Thanks for sharing.

Hi nick thanks for watching. I would say yes and no. When they want to run they can really pull hard and there is no stopping them on my yellowtail gear. But often, as with many sharks, once they realize they are hooked they will just swim back at you and start circling the boat.
