Perfect breakdown of Hammett’s reality and Chandler’s poetry. 👌🏽

Just found your channel Mr. Lovisi, and I love it. I collect vintage paperbacks; mostly sword & sorcery and weird fiction. Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, H.P. Lovecraft, Lin Carter, L. Sprague De Camp, Poul Anderson, Karl Edward Wagner, Michael Moorcock, Jack Vance, Fritz Leiber, & John Jakes are among my favorite authors. Modern books largely pale in comparison, particularly in the cover art department. Love watching your videos. You're about the same age as my uncle who first introduced me to Conan the Barbarian, Cthulhu, Elric of Melnibone, and the world of Zothique back when I was about 10 or 11 years old. Love all the books, the history, and passion for collecting. Keep cranking them out sir.

Great to see these editions. I'm in the middle of re-reading my copy of Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, as published by Modern Library in 1934.

Great vid gary. Never saw these reprints before by tower and grosset and dunlap. Also Dick powell wasn't in the thin man. It was William powell. Nice entrance with the cigarrette and Hat.

Nice hat, Gary! Solid exposition too, on the comparative differences between Hammet and Chandler. I had a High School English teacher back in the day who tended to vilify anything that was not authored by Bronte, Melville, Austen and the like (think “Silas Marner”, ha!) and reserved a special loathing for science fiction authors-but the one writer from the pulp era that she reserved some modicum of praise for was Raymond Chandler.

Mike, glad you enjoy the videos, thanks for your kind comments. You know, I also collect and have read all the authors you mention, I grew up with them and their work, and of course the cover art! Frank Frazetta, Jeff Jones, so much great stuff to enjoy, all clacks stuff today. I also love Edgar rice Burroughs, Otis Adelbert Kline who are great!

Michael, the hat was my wife’s idea, I think my head is too big for it. Glad you enjoyed the video. I have a long beef with Silas Marner and English lit teachers who praise it so highly. Now, I am not saying it is rubbish, but it sure caused me to swear off books and reading when I was in school, luckily I discovered Edgar rice Burroughs on my own at 12 and never stopped reading after that! Cheers!

Funny! I genuinely laughed out loud at your comment, Gary! I had a similar experience as you did (with the HS teacher I mentioned) who endlessly overanalyzed “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” by James Joyce. I found solace and quietude by steeping myself in the worlds of Arthur C. Clarke. Thanks, Art! I also endured a period (age 14) where I nearly gave up on books when the same teacher 2 years prior made us suffer through “The Scarlet Letter” instead of assigning the class either of two other novels in the omnibus provided (“The Red Badge of Courage” or “The Bridge of San Luis Rey”). Either one just had to be FAR, FAR less painful. 😩

Dick Powell didn’t play in the Thin Man films. That was William Powell.

Hi Gary, your wife asked you if Chandler and Hammett knew each other as friends and if they wrote books at same time , but you told theyr life story but did not answer her actual question. You need to listen to what her question is. I am sure your viewers would like to know also.

They probably did know each other, certainly knew of each other. Hammett was a bit before Chandler but both wrote near the same time.
