Hello Derek! Very cool calculator! I'm trying to put up some hammock anchors in my living room for the winter time and it is rectangular. And I need to place it on the diagonal in the room and on one side of the room I need to put up the anchor high up since it can't ben in the way of anything else. It would be a very interesting addition to the the calculator work when you have uneven rope lengths and uneven anchor points when one side is known, to know where to hang the second one to get a flat hammock! :D

If you used 5/6 (83.333%) for the rideline length, the results would be much nicer, and easier to remember: 10' hammoch => 100 in. ridgeline 11' hammock => 110 in. ridgeline 12' hammock => 120 in. ridgeline
@DerekHansen3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback, but you may have missed that I _did_ use the 83% ridgeline length in the calculator, in fact, there is a mini calc that I mention in this video as well -- did you skip that part? Anyway, I'm just trying to understand your question if I'm missing something on my end. Of course, the nice thing about this new calculator is that you can put any length you want into the ridgeline so you can make it as easy to remember as you want.
@Waldlaeufer703 жыл бұрын
@@DerekHansen Sorry, I really missed the option to change the percentage for the length of the ridgeline. I just wondered about the 109.6" of your 11' hammock. 83% is a bit smaller than 5/6th (83.333%). The beauty of the second number is that it corresponds the length of the hammock beautifully. However, since the number can be changed by the user, forget my comment.
@DerekHansen3 жыл бұрын
@@Waldlaeufer70 No problem. I've updated the calc for 83.333, but yes, you can enter any length you want in the field to accommodate your preferred ridgeline. The "mini calc", 83% button is just a fun convenience, but I expect most will enter what their ridgeline already is or what they want it to be.

I have one more feature suggestion: Your default values make sense in imperial measurements. As soon as I switch to metric, the numbers stay the same and don't make *any* sense anymore. Would be extremely nice if it would convert automatically to the new unit system when changed, or just detect that the default values have not been changed and then put in metric default values.

Hi Derek, thank you for your calculator. I used the old version a lot. I found some bugs in the metric version: 1. the unit for the input of the preferred sit height is still in "in" 2. the calculation of the ridgeline, the head room and the suspension in cm is false 3. the calculation of the hang height in m is false my inputs are: distance 5m hammock lenght 3.5 m preffered sit height 50 cm weight in hammock 85 kg hang angle 30 degrees output hang height 6.4 m (false) rigdgeline 30.3 cm (false) suspension 11.4 cm (false) headroom 8.8 cm (false)

Question - when selecting "Bridge" and inputting the hammock length, should we include the length of the hammock AND the associated dog bones? Per Warbonnet, "The ridger runner with the dogbones attachment is 163"(tight and flat) no suspension." In this scenario, I would select "Bridge" and input 13.58' as the Hammock Length, correct? Thanks!
@DerekHansen3 жыл бұрын
Yes. For bridge hammocks, you need to include the full length, which would include the "triangle" suspension at each end. They are long :)

If I have a spreader bar hammock what "hang angle" would you recommend and what "preferred sit height"?
@cougarmeat88033 жыл бұрын
Thank you Derek. One issue that was a little confusing was dealing with the WB RidgeRunner. Or I imagine any bridge hammock because the hammock body length is less than the ridgeline length. WB suggests 13 ft between apex points so I’m guessing that would be the RidgeLine. But a hammock length is a required field. So I just put something in Hammock length, checked the ridgeline length box, and put in 156 in (13 ft). I don’t use the Calculate RidgeLine button. Just want to be clear - if it is correct - that for a bridge, you use the distance were the side lines come together (like the 13 ft for the Ridge Runner) and you put that in the ridgeline length and it doesn’t matter what you have (within reason) in the hammock length?
@DerekHansen3 жыл бұрын
Yes. But please check this with me. Let's make sure it makes sense. Thanks for your help.
@cougarmeat88033 жыл бұрын
@@DerekHansen Derek, I got rid of my duplicate post and tried what I described above and it didn’t work - in the sense that the numbers were different from results using 13ft for hammock length and no ridgeline. I guess The resulting ridgeline number threw me off when I initially did it that way. Revising what I said above - I’d just use the hammock length (13 ft for a RidgeRunner), NOT use any ridgeline calculation and I can ignore the ridgeline length reported back. At 7:45 minutes you mention sort of an internal (calculation) adjustment for the bridge Type that has something to do with a 30 degree hang angle. But with the bridge, I want an angle closer to 25 degrees. So do I put that in and NOT mark the type as Bridge? Wasn’t sure what you were getting at there. Please know that your calculator is great and I tell people about it all the time. If I was dealing with a Gathered End hammock it is Easy Street - no questions at all. With the bridge, I use the apex distance as the hammock length and’ I imagine that once you get those starting numbers, setting the foot end up a bit higher, not by moving to point on the tree, but by lengthening the head end suspension and shorting the foot end suspension - is for version 1.3 :) Seems changing the connecting points on the tree, to raise the foot end, would change the hang angle.

Just ordered your book on kindle. I hope this will educate me on how to hang a hammock in my 1982 mobile home and in my future road home(s), still in the planning research stage. Do you suppose I could hang a hammock in a Ram Promaster City cargo van? Thank you!
@DerekHansen3 жыл бұрын
I hung a 10 foot hammock easily inside a Dodge Grand Caravan (van) and it worked great. Just had to lay the seats down. I have an illustration in my book that may help you. Just hang diagonal across the inside of the van. I'm not as familiar with the Promaster cargo van, but it sounds spacious enough for a hammock. You may not be able to hang a big 13 foot Mayan hammock, but a camping hammock or an open hammock like a Grand Trunk USA might be just fine.

Will there be an update for Android to calculate the ridgeline length like there is on the web version please ?
@DerekHansen Жыл бұрын
No, not in the foreseeable future. The problem is that there are so many Android variants (and iOS updates) that as soon as I update it to work on one, it breaks for someone else. I'm not a developer, so I have to pay for every update, and to be frank, the app doesn't pay for itself. The web version (free!) is the best I can do by myself to give back to the community. I wish I could build the app that I have designed on paper! It's awesome! But until I win the lottery or my book somehow gets featured on the Tonight Show, this is mostly a labor of love.

Hah! Well, I can see your point. However, I don't think folks are using the calculator to just throw a hammock up between two trees, or any other pedestrian usage. The calc is really handy when you are putting in permanent anchors or checking distances or for tricky situations like hanging from rafters. It's also helpful as a load calculator as well, showing the estimated forces at play that help you adjust your suspension or hang variables for a safer hang. I hope this helps!
