Hello there 😊 I like this video and I suppose this is quite exaggerated and on the humour side, but for thoose not knowing about tents, not be confused : This video is comparing a nearly fully equipped hammock set vs a low price tent. If you look at mountaineering tents for example, outer layer goes down to the ground, and there is a tiny tunnel at the entrance usually. This allows you to build your outer layer while exposed to the rain (doesn't matter if the outer layer is wet), and then to build the inner layer (carried in a waterproof bag/container) protected from the rain. Here is a quick summary of (good) tent vs (good) hammock+tarp : Tents: does not need trees, are warmer than hammock, are usable even with super brutal wind Hammocks: usually lighter, allows to put the tarp higher, and thus stand under tarp, does not need a flat ground, you can use them even if the floor is water, more surface under tarp, usually faster to set up So which one is better ? neither. Hammocks are wonderful when there are trees around, tents offer better protection but are heavier and take longer to set up. What too choose depends on your preferences as well as the environment you go through. Have fun traveling 😊
@thomasmorris25685 жыл бұрын
In addition to your already great points. With an under blanket in colder temperatures a hammock setup could way the same as or more than a tent. And don't forget people, if you've got the tarp, that's a shelter on its own. Way up your options people, and know roughly where your staying, and what the terrain is like.
@felixbertoni5 жыл бұрын
@@thomasmorris2568 a tent tend to have a better insulation potential than hammock, since you are lower on the ground and in a "closed air space" of course it depends on the tent and on the hammock set you choose, and anyway, in most situations where the cold will force you toward the choice of a tent over a hammock, there will be no tree around for the hammock... And the tarp can as well been carried with a tent... I would even say that for long long hikes you can carry both tent and hammock, since hammock weight and space occupation is really negligible in regard of a big hiking backpack 😂 Another really nice side of hammock is that you can set it high enough to be protected from most of wildlife during your sleep 🤔

I watched this almost exactly one year ago, and I was absolutely convinced to buy a hammock instead of a tent. Here’s the problem: there are a million different hammocks out there, different configurations for the setup, tarp, and then the whole underquilt vs sleeping pad thing, then a separate mosquito net… LONG STORY SHORT it’s been a year and I still haven’t decided which hammock to buy for myself, since the amount of choice is paralyzing, I hate creating waste or buying stuff I don’t need or won’t use, and so here I am. And I blame you, Fowler. You did me fowl 😂
@arthurjones96446 ай бұрын
Hello If you are still looking for an answer here is my experience in Florida - eno doublewide hammock - eno ember underquilt - eno bug net - Tarp of your liking If above 65 degrees all of the above work fine with a lightweight wool blanket or sleeping bag of your choice on top of you in the hammock If it’s below 65 degrees I add the snugpack banana shaped cocoon sleeping bag, but I still keep the underquilt below me If it’s colder than 55 and down to freezing (36) I add a pair of scuba or kayak neoprene socks. Because the only thing that gets cold is my feet at that point. I have camped this way for years in Florida totally warm and comfortable! I hope this helps you! God bless you and happy trails
@pedro_claro6 ай бұрын
@@arthurjones9644 definitely some good tips in there that I’ll have to start using. As a cycle tourer I already have waterproof socks so yeah I might just get an extra pair for sleeping. I ended up going with the Amok Draumr. Sleeping pad lets me sleep on the floor if I have to, but I tend to avoid it so I don’t get a puncture. It’s also kinda heavy and bulky as a setup so I might just sell it for a lighter version or use it more for motorcycle touring. despite the disadvantages, it’s super comfy. Best thing about Hammock IMO is the that you have a tarp. And if you pack it so that its in an outside pocket or the first thing you have access to, then you can keep all your stuff dry as you set up if you pay attention... Plus its nice in general to have a tarp you can toss up at any point to wait out a passing storm or to work under. I always bring as big of a tarp as I can depending on what my goals are for the outing or camping trip...

@Bush_Tucker5 жыл бұрын
I mean he could of put the tarp over the tent while setting it up to keep the water out like he did with the hammock, 100 percent that hammock would be impossible if he didn't have the tarp while the tent will still keep him warm
@MrDegsy695 жыл бұрын
That Aussie Bloke you have a small point about keeping warm but the risk of getting swamped on the ground is a lot greater in those conditions. If you use top and bottom down quilts on your hammock you can be as warm as toast. The trick is pitching the hammock leeside and taking advantage of surrounding shrubbery in the woodland to reduce body heat convection. The hammock went up a lot faster preserving body heat loss. The ground dweller just appeared to climb in surrounded with all his wet gear. Give me 'the Gods' everytime!
@MrDegsy695 жыл бұрын
@Brenton Lewis especially when you're pissed, soaking wet as you get in and the tent has its own moat! The humidity sauna effect is also wonderfull as all that ground water evaporates trapped underneath the securely pegged to the ground flysheet. Just think garden cloche! The hammock will always score for comfort in these conditions as ambient air temperatures are less critical with cloud cover. 😂😂😂
@Giixxersquid5 жыл бұрын
The best part is the guy in the hammock still has space for a Mylar 5 pack so he can use a single sided wall to trap heat while having a small bomb fire to assist with colder temperatures. Plus all the gear used for the hammock combined weighs as much as just the poles needed for a tent. Realistically speaking the hammock could be a much more viable option depending on where you are. Obviously a desert won’t work but you’re being ignorant by using that example. Not to mention you can hang a tent higher in the air so you don’t have to worry about snakes and other (small)creatures who will be looking for someplace to go in rainy weather.

@@Giixxersquid Why is someone saying a desert is ignorant? I live in a desert. Are people not supposed to backpack here? Lol

0m3n why is it ignorant? Let’s see of the land mass on earth the desert makes up around 30%. It’s a scarce environment without sufficient food and water. Any person with common sense would immediately leave the desert in search of a more life sustaining environment. Is that reason enough?

Just looking at this video as what it is, a funny video, it's still pretty much accurate and for years I've just adopted hammock because it's so practical, fast, light and comfortable when you're only there for one night, there's nothing better. Of course tents have their own best pros like very cold weather, no trees area or some other specific situations. But for a random hike in a forest area, I will always pick the hammock over the tent.

I have both hammock and tent. Vastly prefer the comfort of the hammock for most camping, but you can't always find a hang in some parts of the country. Yeah, can do to ground with a hammock but that is definitely far from best. This video definitely showed why the hammock shines when setting up or striking camp in the rain! Yeah, he exaggerated things a bit, but not too much. I hate sleeping wet. It has NEVER happened with the hammock. I even slept hanging over a tiny stream one rainy trip.

BladeFit Academy good man! It is well worth the small learning curve for the much improved comfort it brings. It will always be more technical that simply throwing up a tent but things like pocket loop webbing straps, caribiners and loop aliens mean you don't even need to learn to tie knots these days. In my ground dwelling days i used to use a goretex bivi sack, down sleeping bag, ridgerest sleeping mat and an ex MOD DPM camo basha. With a little bit of bush craft and some paracord you could rig up a stealthy storm shelter that can take the worse that nature could throw at it if you chose a well drained site with nearby shelter like shrubbery or dry stone walls. Tents really are for girls when you compare them with the sparta of sleeping underneath a starlit sky.

I love seeing the hammock haters because of this video. Let’s be real, with a super fly it’s better than a tent. I use both, but my wife and I paddled the entire 1600 mile Yukon River with a tent. We went through a 10 day stretch with nonstop rain (day and night) and still kept inside of the tent, the top of our pads, and our sleeping bags dry. We would take fly out first and set up the rest underneath.

Haha great video Fowler :) to be honest. I love hammock camping like so many others. I am from Denmark, but I have a sheltowee hammock made in the states. When I got it I was told that I was the first to ever order one here in this country. I do both trips with backpack and with bicycle. On my recent bicycle tour where I travelled with no plan and wild camped random places, the tent was most pratical. My first trip was with hammock and I did struggle to find trees, the next I travelled with a Hilleberg Nallo 2 and then a MSR Hubba Bubba freestanding tent. Sometimes I camped near to a cliff, with view over the ocean. Would not be possible with a hammoch, because there were no trees in those places, but many times I wished I had a hammock when camping in the mountains, because of uneven ground. So there are bennefits to both. If I only could choose one I would go for tent, because I belive it offers more opportunities to camp, even so it's not as comfortable as a hammock. I do have plans to buy a rectangular Tarp at some point. Have seen there are many ways to set them Up when going ground :)
