Played like a Hammond pro! Love the sound of your B3! Your’s sounds like one of my 1955 B3’’s. I’m 65, have owned & traveled with several Hammonds and arsenal’s of Leslies over the years. Of all the demos I’ve listened to on KZbin, your Hammond sounds the BEST! I’m also a retired engr, & have completely disassembled & repaired Hammond’s since the 60’s. I know them inside & out. Read some negative comments posted below. Guys, you’re being too picky.

Jim, this video is an excellent tutorial on the function of the drawbars in playing the Hammond Organ. Without this knowledge anyone new to the Hammond Organ can be totally intimidated.

Thanks for the vid. You nailed exactly what I was looking for. As a "Non-Hammond" player that only knows workstations with "Clones", I saw pictures of B3s with all these "Extra" drawbars and was confused. Now I get it!

My god, killer playing and tones. I never knew how difficult it could be to nail down a tone! I see why players back in the day would slam their draw bars in after a set

In a comment below I mentioned that we make our videos spontaneously which is often still true. We have recently started to develop our ability to do some editing which we hope will make our videos easier to follow, more to the point, and perhaps more enjoyable. We are now exploring the possibility of teaming up with some new friends who will comment on video about our restored Hammond organs without the need to come to our store. We know that Zoom may help us to gather comments and opinions much like we now see on the evening news and allow us to connect with a greater number of Hammond enthusiasts........Suggestions for enhanced connectivity will be appreciated

Please read the comment of Mr Muzic where he has made some great suggestions regarding terminology! My thanks! AND it goes to show that we can all learn from each other. I especially appreciate the manner in which he made his comments with the intent to assist, help and enhance the message. Constructive suggestions like his are always welcome and appreciated. Sorry it took so long to reply and notice the comment but now that I have, I will try harder. It should be noted that we make these videos spontaneously and without editing so we know that mistakes may occur. The more comments the better so we can all improve. Again, Thank you for all your comments with the intent to be helpful.

Listen to “Maze” by the band Phish. The beginning of the song is a demonstration of just the percussion being used (he just plays a single note repeatedly).

I've seen a few of your videos and wondered if you could play or just sell. What a pleasant surprise to hear your skill! Also to have questions answered I had since childhood. A neighbor, a Lutheran pastor, had a B3 in his home. I used to marvel at its sound. Now I know some of the controls!

Thank you for your kind words. I have played for most of my life but in business I meet so many great musicians that I would rather have them play than listen to myself. I believe this opinion is shared by many of our viewers! Ha! So....we are always on the look out for great talent to really show off the full potential of the instruments. I still love to play and have learned that there is always someone from whom you can learn and others you can mentor. Clint Eastwood said it best in one of his movies " A man needs to know his limitations" I so appreciate the many talented musicians that visit our store! I also like to teach and encourage beginners. Have a DVD titled "JIm Huss Frozen Finger method" which I put together to help beginners get started. Some tell me it really helps them. More information at www.keyboardexchange.com

I don't really play the organ, but I hopefully I will start this year at my church. When I was playing the organ I was using the Draw Bars, but I also was using the b flat preset for the upper and lower manual. It didn't sound right. I don't know why, and I was using the draw bars for the pedals too. It was difficult for me to use It because It wasn't making the right sounds. Why?
@KeyboardExchange
@KeyboardExchange 8 жыл бұрын
+Alvin McCranie There are many factors that are required for a great sound with a Hammond and Leslie. The most important factor is to have the correct model organ and Leslie and it MUST be properly restored by an expect now that this equipment is about 50 years old and older. I would need more information from you to give you a better reply. Also remember that the B flat preset key only controls one group of drawbars

You need a hammer, you can push the switches and drawbars stronger with it.

I understand your suggestion that we should be more gentle with the instrument. The good news is that these organs are built so well they can handle a more aggressive playing style which is often used in Rock and Roll and Gospel music. I do agree that one can get too aggressive so point taken. Thanks for your comment

Am I correct that percussion only sounds when no other key is pressed? So when you play legato there is no percussion? I have a Nord Electro and that synth behaves in this way, I wonder if a B3 does the same, and why.

why dont you use the bass pedals instead of the left hand bass? a real organist MUST know how to use the bass pedals!
@KeyboardExchange

There is a reason why some do not use pedals for their bass lines which we explain in another video. Here is a link kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYmwf3Wenc2mgNU Please let us know if you have additional input and thank you for comment.

In the future, Hence forth, The Hammond B-3 Organ has two Manuals, (not keyboards) and a 25 key, Pedalboard. Upper Manual, is called, "The SWELL Manual" Lower Manual, is called, "The GREAT Manual" You may want to use the exact technical terminology when explaining; such as "B natural"; "one keyboard=manual;" stops=drawbars; ---"this group of drawbars to the right of the Organ???" You Should Have Stated, "To The Right Of The Pedal Drawbars"!!! Just a brief observation of your terminology of teaching skills... Let's teach it technically correct!!! Many thanks
