the M3 has one speaker. The M100 has three speakers. two large ones. and a 10 inch reverb speaker. The L100 you have the reverb it is on the normal 12 inch speakers.

My first hammond was an L-100. Great sound! Used a 122 leslie.

The L's and M's were made at the same time. The L's were budget spinets under 1000 dollars in 1961 when they came out. But the real major difference between the L and the other organs are the output tubes. The L uses EL84s while the Ms used 6V6's and Hammond tone cabinets used more bass heavy tubes because the EL84s are more treble heavy so they sound brighter but really cant growl like the other tubes can.
@dspiffy9 жыл бұрын
JustGirlyThings I would argue the biggest difference is the lack of scanner vibrato.
@justgirlythings54189 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you dont look at every detail the only difference would be the electronic vibrato in the L but there are way more details then just a missing vibrato scanner.
@dspiffy9 жыл бұрын
JustGirlyThings That's the biggest one. The other stuff seems very minute. That said, I dont care for the L overall and probably wont pick up another one.

The M was manufactured from 1948 to 1951. The original L was manufactured from 1961 to 1964. Both can be chopped and modded, and the growl can be easily added to the L. The the Truman-era M weighed a slightly heavier 249 pounds compared to the 215 pound L, and the M was two inches wider and deeper. Retail on the L was $995 to $1,220. Said Keith Emerson, "I took to riding the L100 like a bucking bronco."
@johnkiley55486 жыл бұрын
Actually the biggest difference is the tone generator itself. The L-series was the first Hammond organ to use the self-starting synchronous motor, hence the single ON/OFF Power Switch. The M-100 series was the last series of Hammonds to use the non-self-starting synchronous motor (START and RUN switches). The L-series generator motor runs at 1800rpm, the M-series at 1200rpm. This is one reason for the difference in sound between the two, as well as the saturable-reactor Vibrato/Chorus used in the L-series.

The worst part about the L series is the chorus vibrato and percussion decay. Kon Zissis is a guy who successfully changed those to resemble M-series. You can modify the vibrato scanner to shift the phase of the straight signal to make it sound like the scanner's chorus vibrato. Also the percussion can be easily modified to get a shorter decay of the percussion. I don't know why I'm saying this on a 5 years old video. I used to own a L122 and was very disappointed with the sound. I actually installed a T-series scanner with a custom built recovery amp (thanks Simon!). I've had so much fun with the organ, I miss it a lot.

@@dspiffy Hello Dan. I have a L-111. It is basically in new condition. Seems like it was never played. The tone generators were very noisy until i added oil and after a couple of weeks it is soooo quite!!!! I am reaching out to you for your expertise. Is there anything i can do to make the sound more like a B-3? I currently wired in a Trek 11 and running into a Vent 11 and then out to a Roland KC-600. Is there anything thing i can add? Any ideas? I see there are some dials on the back. I see three of them.

@@richardornelas3995 well the biggest difference is the vent versus a Leslie. running it stereo will help
@richardornelas39953 жыл бұрын
@@dspiffy Thank you Dan. I will try stereo. Since i only have one output on the Trek 11 i will see how it sounds by running two outs from the vent into two roland amps and see if that helps.

It seems, Hammond never tried to cut costs in low budget organs, by offering organs with 6 footages on upper and 3 footages on lower manual, what sometimes was done to make electronic organs affordable.

Does the motor start with a spring- like how mini ceiling fans start?
@mysterivan8 жыл бұрын
A huge capacitor does the job, dunno how... something about electrons chasing their tails, not sure who I'm quoting on that.
@dspiffy8 жыл бұрын
No, it is a PSC motor like regular ceiling fans.
@mysterivan8 жыл бұрын
The permanent split-capacitor (PSC) motor uses only a run capacitor to provide the phase shift required to start the motor. Fig. 1 shows examples of PSC motors, and Fig. 2 shows two diagrams of the PSC motor. In the diagrams note that the run capacitor is connected between the run and start windings and no disconnecting switch or relay is required to dc-energize the start winding from the applied voltage when the motor has started. Also note that the run capacitor is oval shaped. The run capacitor has a metal case, which allows it to dissipate extra heat that is built up in the capacitor since it remains in the circuit at all times. www.industrial-electronics.com/AC-DC-motors/54_Permanent-Split-Capacitor-Motors.html
