This is my third and final attempt at testing Grundig 750 vs Sangean ATS-909x. Sorry for the RF noise.

Interesting test. The Sangean is evaluated while the Grundig is powered on. However, the Grundig is evaluated only when the Sangean is powered off.

Thanks Tom. I've enjoyed quite a few of your videos during my receiver research. I ordered the Grundig 750 as a result. It will be a while before I see it however, as the seller I ordered from has it back ordered by 4-5 weeks (had some bonus points built up with them!)

Great video Tom. Very useful. Have the 909 and saving for the 750. Actually its the Tecsun 2000 but same radio. Very helpful to compare two radios of similar price to find the good and bad points. I use my Sangean with a long wire and pick up some good signals. I want the 750 for range

Excellent review! I have the Grundig Satellit 750 myself. But a question, what is happening with the shortwave? Even the evangelist radio are not OnAir anymore, just Radio Habana Cuba, International Radio China, Radio Rumania and the Voice of Vietnam. It's a matter of antenna? I live in a apartment at the 5th floor, any suggestion? I just use a wire attached to the radio antenna.

There is a 11 year cycles that the sun goes through. This directly affects shortwave conditions and right now for the next few years the conditions are at the worst except for a few occasions. Here is a link to get you more information. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_cycle

I have the Satellite 750 and the older version Sangean 909. I like them both but the 750 is more sensitive with SW then the 909. At least with my radios. Different production runs may yield slightly different radios. There is a guy at Kiwa.com who does performance upgrades to SW receivers. I had him trick out my 909 with new LEDs, tuner wheel tweeks, and receiver tuning. Adding a Sony speaker by a guy I met at HRO made the 909 sound sweeter than the 750 on AM and FM.

Those portables do much better at certain locations. I noticed that even carrying them down a flight of stairs in the house, that the signal disappears as the whip antenna goes through the floor levels. My best indoor location is right next to the bathroom window facing southeast and the whip gets oriented towards the east-northeast. I have an ext. antenna on my Sangean ats 803A in my workshop, just a 30 ft. piece of speaker wire flung over the roof. Except at 2-4 pm, it has real good reception.

Hi Tom Great videos and keep them coming. You said the Grundig 750 is probably the best for under $500. I have been looking at Palstar R30A the price is almost double the $500 number. Have you had a chance to even touch 1 of the Palstar R30A units and what do you think of it.

Nice video and lovley the New Sangean ATS909X you are rigth about the recepcion with the antena external any radio increases the recepcion its the best way to testing the radio sensibility ,i have tested the sony icf-sw77 and the Tecsun S-2000 same its the Grundig 750 and the sony icf-sw55 an the sony icf sw-1000T I put in the first position the TECSUN S-2000 second the sw77,third the sw55,and 1000T as very good sensibility in all bands for the sides and the sound is a pleasure,gretings.

Hi Tom, After reviewing this video if you had to pick a good bed side radio, which of these two would you say would be better based on your experience of owning both.. Would you prefer the Satellite 750 or Sangean ATS 909x? I listen mainly to shortwave in the evenings. L et me know your opinion. As usual, your videos are always helpful in choosing radios. That is a tough question. If I had to chose one for a bed side radio I think I would pick the 750. It would be easier to tune while laying on the bed on my side. If I was going to sit up in bed I would chose the 909. Secondly, if I could only use the builtin telescopic antenna the 750 does a better job of reception. Lastly, if listening and tuning while laying on my side the 750 dial is easier to read in the dark but not too bright that you could not leave it on all the time. Remember I am no expert and everyone's needs are different.

the 750 is a great radio but sizabley bigger. i love the analog meter and the spread out control knobs. 909's are nice too but more menu based ....great travel radio tho. i too use my 750 bedside. got it on closeout at radio shack for $125...i should have boughtthen ALL!

Really can't help you as there are a lot of differences between the two radios. If I had to decide bases on the 750 I have and the 909x, I have I would choose the 750 for its better reception on the built-in antenna for shortwave. Keep in mind that the quality of these radios can vary from radio to radio.

I have a Radio Shack DX398 which is the same as an earlier version of the 909x. I did the radio labs mod years ago and I’m very happy I did. Just removing the tuning knob detent and the chuffing was a relief.

That is a tough question to ask becuase it depends on what features you are looking for. For a desktop, i would recommend the Grundig 750 but is in high demand right now so the prices have gone up about 40%. For a portable, I like the new Tecsun PL-680. Remember I am no expert.

Hello Tom, hope you doin fine...based on your videos finally did decide to buy tecsun pl 660. I received it 2 days ago. The reception on air band is zero, is there any good way to get better reception for air bad?. One more thing I am not quite satisfied with the external anntena came In the box. True. I also have PL-660, an other radios with air band reception such as a Sony ICF-2010 and ICOM scanners IC-R5 and R20 and they all need to be near an airport. Fortunately, I'm living in a place where planes have to pass as they wait for clearance to land and I can listen to them and also Control and Tower. Whenever I have to go and pick up someone at the airport, I always bring the R5 and monitor the approach and landing of the plane this person is on. Note: I intend to buy a PL-680, that is an upgrade to the PL-660 which has an annoying filter that turns the sound of weaky stations muffled and very low at signals below S2 (readout of PL-660 own S-meter).

Are you asking if there’s a difference between the ATS 909 and ATS 909x? If so yes the x model is a revised model of the original radio with some new features if someone printed atx 909x I believe that is probably just a typo, Ali express has the occasional typo in descriptions.

for me, size and battery power are important so I can sit on living room couch and listen with attached telescoping / internal antenna, Really like the outside / internal tests ! .I am not able to place outside antenna up. After a few months of use, telescoping antenna on my Sony SW 7600GR is getting floppy / loose at bottom joint. Have had a pretty good time with the Sony and have received 5 qsl cards.Mentally, I'm ebating mysekf about worthwhileness of getting either a Grundig 750 or a Sangean 909

Probably the noise that you hear on the radio sangean comes from the power supply of the grundig 750

Back in 2014 the Grundig 750 was a decent radio. Since then it has increased 75% and hasn't gotten any better... Better off with a Tecsun PL880. Same manufacturer but a more modern design that out performs the 750. Also over $200 cheaper!

Sadly the 909X can't be considered a portable since the thing is truly insensitive on HF without the external antenna. I had one and it was a doorstop on the internal one. It's pretty, I'll give it that, but with the deafness and annoying detent on the front facing tuning knob, I really didn't find it a very appealing radio. Had to return it.

Yes, it does. But it is not of much use with radios that are deaf when using their own whip antenna. The thing is to connect an external antenna to its jack, even a small one, and its reception improves greatly. I use a hula loop antenna.

Hi. I read some many critical reviews about both the S2000 and the ATS-909x, but if I had to choose I would go for the ATS-909x provided I always used an external antenna. Sangean radios are known to be almost def as standalone shortwave receivers (using only their whip antennas). I have a Realistic DX-440 (Sangean ATS-803) with this shortcomming. But conected to external antenna, the DX-440 is very sensitive> It is my favorite radio to listen to program and music because of its great audio. One day, you commented that your first radio was a Halicrafters S-38. Since then, I always looked for one at a good price and I guess I found it. If I get it, I'll make a video about it. 73!

I know someone asked you to do this test but what is the point? No one would by a radio that small and thin and expect the internal antenna to be very good. We all know that the antenna makes or breaks a receiver and even more so a transceiver. Their only so much copper one can fit inside a thin small radio. Volume wise you could fit 4-6 Sangean ATS-909x's inside that Grundig. The Sangean is perfect to pack in a carry on bag for international travel the Grundig is not. I would be more interested in how they work with an external antenna and what the price difference and availability difference is between them. In fact the Sangean will fit in most cars adn SUV glove boxs and center consoles. Do not get me wrong I would rather have the Grundig but that is because I spent 12 years living in Germany and feel more comfortable with that Brand name. On the other hand if I was going to be flying back and forth between the USA, Europe, Mexico, Asia I would rather pack the Sangean on carry on and keep it with me with my laptop so I know it is not being bounced around by the airline stay like a basket ball with my checked luggage. You can get pretty compact shortwave external antenna's designed for us guys that travel and want to take a radio with us. I understand you need to pander to your youtube faithful to keep viewership up but this is just a bad comparison all the way around. I bet the Grundig weights 4X as much or more as well which would be explained by a ferrite rod with tones of enameled wire wrapped around it inside for the internal antenna! Did the Hammerlunds come with internal antenna's? Maybe we should compare the Sangean to a Hammerlund! LOL

Sorry but, this is a flawed test. The Grundig has an internal power supply which creates noise in the immediate area near it. You should not only switch 'off' the big radio, but also unplug it all together or, use it with batteries only. The Sangean is a very sensitive receiver and, any noise from nearfield equipment affects its performance. I have both radios myself and my findings are totally different to yours. I keep them well apart though when testing. It's a well known fact, switching power supplies generate a lot of noise around them. So, for a fair evaluation, they have to be kept well apart to get a valuable conclusion.

Why would you connect an external antenna on one radio when comparing reception on another radio to determine which is better?!? Your radio reviews are always majorly skewed. Also you miss key features that make the radio drastically different like your review of the 750, you skip over things like the 50 ohm AM external antenna input. There was only one of many videos you actually quickly brought it up. When shortwave is dying, people look to AM for doing fun. And i echo what others say about not turning off the radio.

You are only listening to commercial broadcast stations on AM. My only reason for owning a shortwave radio is for listening to low power SSB transmissions, mostly amateur. I have an Icom IC-R75, a high dollar radio, and even it has problems pulling in these weak signals with a long wire antenna (I cannot use anything else)
