Yes, I was able to see that at an online Radio Store that carried that specific product (Switch box) . I ordered 3 SMA Female to UHF PL259 Male RF Connectors which are exactly the same as the one that I use to connect directly to my Sat 800 that will connect to the switch box posts and I was able toy find the proper connector for the Sat 750 which is a SMA to BNC Coax Adapter SMA Female to BNC Male Coaxial Connector I also ordered two short wire SMA cables to go from the switch box to the radios and of course the supplied short wire SMA that came with the Loop antenna.

Interesting compare, Tom and thank you. If the Sat 800 is on SLOW AGC -- and yours is in the video -- with wavering signals, usually better reception audio quality results. If in compare, the S750 S-meter winds up "all over the place", it's because the S750 AGC is more or less "more" FAST (as defined by the Sat 800) and "medium fast"...there is no S750 slow AGC. There's no S-meter dampening conducted in the Sat 800. Almost universally, the Sat 800 noise floor -- especially post 2003 or newer serial and build -- is much lower than the S750 and the Sat 800 front-end is far more "sensitive" than the S750. BTW, one doesn't always have to punch in an extra key via the Sat 800 keypad. In the WWV case, 10000 entered on the Sat 800 results in the short delay (in case you change ones mind) and then the Sat tunes to and displays 10000.0 kHz. Ditto with the 3900 kHz...enter 3900 and nothing else and the Sat 800 will tune to and display 3900.0

Hi! ☺️ Do you use an external antenna for both units in this testing? I have the 750 and I’m very disappointed with the internal antenna. Would you recommend a wire dipole antenna? With the internal antenna, I am having a really hard time picking up anything on the ham bands. I live out in farm country and Georgia and I’m surprised at how bad the internal antenna is. Thank you so much.
@hamrad88
@hamrad88 3 жыл бұрын
I assume you mean the telescopic antenna. I almost always use an outside antenna. There is too many other electronics in my house that cause interference. Also, the outside antenna should be brought in with shielded coax cable. My best antenna now for shortwave is a MegaLoop antenna which you can find in my Amazon store (link is www.amazon.com/shop/hamrad88 ) it comes with the needed shielded cables. Lastly, shortwave reception is poor right now and will continue to get better over the coming months and years.

I have both radios. The 750 is more senstive on BC with its rotatable ferrite antenna. The 800 sync detector is useful for resolving interference on BC and SW. Its BC sensitivity can be improved with a good external antenna. The 750 is also more sensitive on FM. On SW they both have their strengths. Resolving SSB is easier with the 800 but for those folks who like to fiddle with controls the 750 can give good SSB because of its variable RF gain, antenna attenuation and BFO functions. Overall, I prefer the 750 for daily use and rotate it with my Panasonic RF2200 as a bedside radio. The 800 BC sensitivity can be improved immensely with an amplified indoor antenna such as the CC Crane Twin coil antenna or for those who can afford it, one of the Welbrook antennas.

As the 750 is now discontinued, if you get this message, please give your take on which of the two...the 750 or the 800...should I be looking to buy. I am in the market for a radio. Are there any portables that compare favorably with these Grundigs? Thanks.

BTW, on the Sat 800, one can for example usually keypad enter "71925", and the Sat 800 will tune to 7192.5, without having to enter the decimal point. In fact, tuning this "way", the Sat 800 eliminates the "time wait" for the frequency change, too.

Hi, Tom. Being that both radios have those front mount handles on them, why not dedicate some lower shelf space for one or both, so you can get them off the desk, and still have the option of sliding them out for maintenance and such like? Kind of a rack system.

Since the title of this video is the reception “differences“ between the two radios, I would’ve liked to of seen more examples of that then to hear about the light that’s beside it and a whole bunch of other things that seem to take you off track. It would be nice to have a video that actually showed differences. It could be done in a much shorter time without all the distractions. You seem like a good guy with s good heart and great passion. Since there are many people like myself wanting to decide which radio to purchase, having more of a comparison would’ve been much more helpful for me at least.… Thank you so much for listening and thanks again for your passion and love for what you do.

Looks like both radios are real close except for size/meters and LCD readouts. I prefer the larger meters and readouts. The AGC on the 800 should be set for "slow" on AM shortwave otherwise if there is any fading the audio will get choppy sounding. I always have to check mine to be sure that it is set that way since I forgot to set it when I programmed the frequency slot. Both rigs are real good receivers and would make a new DXer chaser good rigs. Thanks for your review.

Here's revisionism. The Grundig 800 managed to bankrupt two companies because of horrible, horrible quality control. Circuit City cut the price down to $200 at one point on them to clear them out. Almost all of them had to go back to Drake for repairs/fixing and it ended up basically bankrupting both companies. If you got an 800 that was fixed, you got a fine radio. Today in 2018, everyone believes the 800 were quality radios. It was the opposite.

What a.c. adapter do I buy for the 800?
@hamrad88
@hamrad88 4 жыл бұрын
I wish I knew the answer to this question. When I bought this radio used the adapter which was not the original that came with it was junk. It created so much AC noise that you could not use the radio. I bought two others and had the same problem. Finally someone sent me one and it works great. My conclusion was that since the radio requires a lot of current, that the cheaper adapters could not supply enough current and maintain the voltage. If you watch my other videos on this radio you will see the radio worked fine on a lab supply that could provide plenty of current. So I would suggest that you get an adapter that will give you plenty of current and is voltage regulated so the voltage output does not drop when the radio demands high current. I can't give you a specific adapter to buy but suggest you get one from Amazon which has an easy return policy and keep trying them until you find one that works. I wish I could be more specific.

Buy a Trisonic or Electrix branded 1000ma Universal Adapter found on eBay for $13 and up and on Amazon for $18 on up (also may be available at Walmart & Target). These are real Type 2 Linear Adapters and not switching power supplies that produce RF noise, absolutely stay away from these.

But right out of the box, on my 1st floor using it's own antenna, the reception was 1000 times better than the 750, not to mention operation, quality of functions, sensitivity. So I totally disagree with your evaluation stating that they're both the same, NO WAY!

The phone in this video again? Maybe do the videos without the phone in the room. I’m listening because you have incredible knowledge which I’m interested in learning from… But with the phone ringing and another video it makes it hard because you get distracted as a listener. Set aside time to “do your review” Unplug your phone so it’s not distracting and do your interview so you can share your incredible knowledge with us. I hope you take this as constructive criticism. People are interested in seeing the differences between these two radios… The more time you spend actually doing that the better this video is going to be. Blessings

On the meter dancing that can be a simple matter of buffering. I would rather have a live meter than one heavily buffered or dampened. Most cars do not have gauges that actually read what is going on they go to a predetermined location during normal operations and stay their until something goes out of range then the needle goes full deflection and an idiot light comes on. It seems like it just depends on the engineer that designed that part of the circuit I have no idea why they seem to go overboard damping meters especially on more expensive items seems like the more premium something is the more likely it is to have heavily dampened meters or gauges. Kind of like how you had to pay extra to get a tachometer on a manual transmission car or truck for years but the automatic version of the same vehicle would come stock with a tach even though you did not need it. I imagine the Satellite 800 is easier to use since the layout is bigger and easier to read and easier to get a manly finger on with out hitting another button by accident. The display is so nice and large. It looks like the speaker is much larger too!

I do not know if it is a disconnect from the engineers to the market of if marketing is the reason for this or if it is just something that they learn in school? Just seems strange that you would build a VU meter and build a meter driving board and then cut it's legs off by damping the movement too much. But I am not an engineer. In fact I am going to school to become a world class chef. Last week was my first week of school. Prior to that though I did robotics, programming, networking and cyber security for a year. All of my gear is gear I bought used off ebay or got from my dad. It is all old stuff and I have to say I like the analog controls and large displays. I am not a big fan of menua driven systems with lots of buttons with multiple functions. With out my glasses my vision is 20/400 and I am 6 1 inches tall with big hands. IF most Hamerlunds did not need so much work I would own one just for ease of use! LOL

Before her Saturn my Mom had a Buick LeSaber with the 3.8V6. It had a real oil pressure gauge and because it did my Dad was able to replace the oil pump and backing plate before it got so bad as to cause damage. He replaced the sender first just to make sure. You could see the oil pressure and voltage gauge move with rpm and change with temp. The water temp was the same way darn useful those gauges where. Her Saturn on the other hand those gauges just go to the middle of the gauge movement and stay put no matter what! So they are reallly just idiot lights with a needle attached. My Dad's 2003 Toyota has gauges that actually respond to what the engine is doing real time.

We are now in 2022. How is your Grundig satelitt 800 doing after all those years? I just purchased an Sat 800 from a friend who is a Ham operator and was wondering how your is doing.

@@hamrad88 I Love the Sat 800 for a lot of reasons. I love the large writing on each dial, the large info screen, its size and sturdiness; the tuning dial, its retro look and so much more, especially, as I age. My eyesight and hearing is just not what it use to be and the Grundig Sat 800 certainly helps me in those areas. I own a handful of receivers, yet my go to is always the Grundig Sat 800. I hope she sticks around a while. Be well and once again thank you so much for all of your help. From your Atlantic Canadian neighbor, Merci Beaucoup!

Its me again. I know you also own a Grundig sat 750 receiver based on your various video. I learned more from following your fabulous video than anything I've read in a long time on the subject. I recently purchased an Eton Elite 750 receiver which is basically the same as the Grundig version. I'm trying to figure out what cable connecter I will need to connect a MLA 30+ antenna to the Eton(Grundig)750 receiver. I plan to put the 750 and sat 800 on a switch box. You had also recommended to me a switch box (Daiwa CS-201A 2 Position Coax Switch). Do you know if the actual wire connection from the MLA 30+ to receiver fits the switch box or would I also need to add adapters(connectors on the switch box. Sorry to bother you with this stuff. I'm sure you have much better things to do.

Shortwave radio listening is not an exact science, is it, Tom? Even with today's 21st century digital broadcasting of cable TV, we sometimes see interruptions due to variable causes. BTW - what do you think of the C Crane short wave radio, the one that sells for between $150 to &190, and also, what do you think of the Triple Band 50-144-430 Yaesu VX-8DR B3 Unblocked Version Submersible VHF/UHF Amateur Radio Transceiver?

Ccrane radios in general are not too bad but you can find better radios for the same price (speaking of new radios, not used). I have not tested the new Yaesu radio.
