Hey Tom, I just got in a power supply from ebay seller bigapple59. I'm so happy with it my radio has never sounded so good. They are used adapters but mine came in good shape.I paid around 35 bucks for it.But it's worth it to have this 800 working so good, i can even have all my stuff ,tv, phones , lights going and i'm getting stuff on AM, that never used to happen!

I just played with the radio more , Im so happy how this is working now! I also have ac 2 feet away from the radio with the radio working off the internal ferrite bar and im picking up station after station on AM .My radio has never worked this good, it used to pick up anything in the house! Now i'm gonna turn some stuff off and this thing should shine even off just the internal antenna!

Good overall compare and analysis, Tom, and thank you. Soon, you might compare to the "proper or suggested" transformer (linear) based AC adapters. Again, proof positive that almost ANY reasonable switching adapter of proper voltage /. polarity will WORK especially on the Sat 800 and other receivers. HOWEVER, working doesn't equate to proper AC supply...proper supply is low-or-no RFI / EMI as well. Even lab supplies MIGHT generate RFI / EMI depending on their internal construction -- some are switching based, others are transformer (linear), and IF the switching "lab supply" designers realized the potential problems with RFI / EMI. Of note, the Sat 800 doesn't RFI / EMI "filter" incoming power, as it's not needed and once RFI / EMI is "inside" the receiver, such filtering would usually be ineffective, ditto for almost all other receivers and even transceivers.

A lot of cheap and available switching supplies are what I think the main problem is. Or a diode or two and a small filter cap. I am using an older Radio Shack multiple voltage wall wart. It's big! Rated at 800mA at 9VDC. The old RS stock number is 273-1667. I'm almost positive it has a big old transformer in it and a 78xx series or LMxxx series regulator in it. When shopping for a power supply look for similar traits. There are quiet switchers available too but I suspect prices might be higher.

I built a PSU around a 12V lead-acid battery, using a linear regulator for charging. Anything requiring 12-ish Volts can be powered directly; for 9V I'd add a switch, a 78M09 with a heat sink and a couple of filter caps. Similar with 6V and 5V. At the moment I'm working on version 2, built around an 18.5V Li-Ion battery pack.

There are a couple of clues to look for in finding a linear (non-switching) power supply. They are generally more cubic in shape (linear Xfmr uses stacked E-I laminations, dictating size & shape) and considerably more hefty in weight.

Not sure if you found a decent PSU for your Grundig or not, but I wanted to chime in and say that the S800M is perfectly happy running on a 12v linear supply. No problems at all and I've been using it about a year now. What I did was order a 1.5A, 12v transformer, full-wave bridge rectifier, at least a 4700uf @ 16vdc electrolytic filter cap and a LM7812 +12v regulator and built my own supply just for this radio. That said, you can build a 9V supply just as easily by changing the transformer and regulator. I constructed it in a metal project box, with a grounded power cord and shielded cable with the shield connected at the same point as the power cord ground. It hardly even gets warm even with the radio cranked up outside. I also connected the negative supply lead to the AC chassis ground for further grounding of the power supply. I've used the S800M on a automotive lighter-socket adapter before as well. I have also ran it off the trolling motor battery in a fishing boat several times with no problems!

Many of those AC adapters are switching power supplies. The best would be Linear for radios.

yes, the switching ps are always noisy but the second one does have better filtering, your lab supply tho, seriously has maybe 20,000 to 50,000 uf caps giving you the best supply requirements for any hi frequency devices. A wall wart with a power transormer and a big cap hanging on to that would be on my grundig. That is what I did for mine.

Tom, I've also noticed cheap A/C adapters can really ruin radio reception. Is the lab grade PSU you used here a linear model? Would be interesting to see a comparison of HF reception using a quality linear vs. switching power supply. Also, can you comment on how well the Sangean 909x does on the provided power supply vs. batteries? Thanks again!

Hello.. Been watching for a while.. Good show. Anyways, I currently run an Icom R75 and I currently had it running on AC adapter that it came with and I had the same noise I was getting.. I got annoyed which I decided to use a PSU and go DC.. Big, big difference.. My PSU is a Pyramid PS14KX.. Overkill for my radio but that's what I had. Best thing I did so far to reduce my noise floor level.. Went from an S8-9 on AC to S2-3 on DC.. :)

I've done it before, most things are built to some kind of voltage tolerance as you know, I guess you wouldn't want to damage your receiver though, good luck!

Tom: In case you didn't see this post on TRRS #0714 - I Got It. Grundig Monster Radio, this REPLACEMENT 9 VOLT 1AMP AC-AC POWER SUPPLY ADAPTER 9V 1A 1000MA CHARGER PSU found on eBay at the URL found below may be just what you're looking for, with my thanks for all of your great reviews. I've used a Grundig Satellit 800 in my main living area for about a year and love it. I'm in the process of obtaining its little brother, the Satellit 750, to accommodate placement on the bedroom nightstand. Your reviews have led me in the right direction. Keep up the good work and thanks again! +hamrad88 Tom: Please let me know if the 9VDC Power Supply (ref. eBay Item Number 251039163052) did the trick for your S800. For $15.99 & Free Shipping, it's worth a try. I'm going to pick up a couple up for spares for myself once you post the results. BTW, I saw your posts of a similar nature @ Satellit800 on Yahoo Groups. I sure hope this brick works for us S800 user fans. Thanks!

+Kevin Walkowski My guess is that that one will have the same amount of noise as the others. Apparently, the 800 does not have much noise (ripple) filtering on the DC input.

I have run mine on 12v for over a year and it's fine. I think they designed the internal supply circuit to handle accidental connections of 12v adapters. I've ran it on deep-cycle boat batteries as well.

I don't hear much difference. Still very poor S/N ratio. The real difference is probably a much better but spacing occupying antenna.
