Very nice presentation. There are aplausing opinions about that one. I personally appreciate that 50 Hz step which in fact deminishes even the need for BFO. I my receiver I combine always a bit tuning with BFO to set in maximum signal. I'd expect that it's matched best here.

hamrad88 I have a question that maybe you can help me with. I have the Grundig sitting right over my CB radio in my shack. Does it need to be moved? Im wondering if the CB will damage the Grundig?
@hamrad88
@hamrad88 6 жыл бұрын
That is a tough question. It will depend on a lot of factors. My biggest concern would be when you transmit. It could induce a strong RF signal into the Grundig especially if it is on. My suggestion (I am no expert), is to move it. The other thing you should be careful about it were the two radios antennas are located. If you transmit and the antennas are close together the Grundig could get damaged especially if it is on. Hope this helps.

hamrad88 Thank you hamrad88. I agree with you. I will just move the radio to a different place. I have a workman 3 way antenna swich and i hooked up the grundig through that. I was able to recieve good signal this morning through my IMAX2000. This is so much fun.

Still one of the best radios out there. Apparently, there were some quality issues with earlier production lots - wobbly tuning knobs, display imperfections, etc. that kept the repair people at Drake busy for a time - and which yours doesn't seem to exhibit. Is this a late serial number, or do you happen to know if it was ever repaired by Drake? She truly is a gorgeous big rig.

Yes, it is a late number and not sure if it had been repaired as I bought it second hand. Yes, it is in mint condition. Have a great day.

I'm a ham & I use my Alpha Delta 10-80m dipole outside for both transmit & receive. I have an FT991 in the shack & 2 swl portables in the den (a 750 & a 909) & the 800 in my bedroom. I use antenna switchers to accomplish this. All the other radios work great except for the 800 - receive is so far down as to be useless. When the connection wasn't going thru an antenna tuner the reception was amazing (u really need an external SW antenna for it)!. I'm stymied, & the only reason I can conceive is that the circuitry for the 750 & 909 aren't affected by signal quality coming thru a tuner (which I use w/ my 991). Same antenna, same RG8U coax. I've checked everything in back. Disappointed & perplexed, but I hope to replace it with a laptop soon anyway.

+hamrad88 Tom and all...is there really a need for fine-tuning knob with direct-tune as the Sat 800 enables it. The Sat 800 tuning allows 50Hz either side of a signal, the effect can be seen especially on SSB when tuning either side of dead-on signal changes the pitch by about 50Hz either side, by slightly moving the Tuning knob to either side.
@hamrad88
@hamrad88 8 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Rotello 50 hz? Yes, I would say there is a need for one.
@JROrg2009
@JROrg2009 8 жыл бұрын
+hamrad88 If you are used to fine-tune needs, the Sat 800 to the surprise of many really does not miss it...with the combination of good quality ceramic filters, AM Sync, direct-tune, rock-solid TXCO, etc...many -- even amateur operators -- are surprised that fine-tuning -- better than 50Hz either side -- is not missed for the majority of Sat 800 users and even most amateurs that use Sat 800.. Agreed, it is not an amateur class receiver or part of a transceiver, and was not intended so.

Whenever I spot a garage sale I stop and buy whatever linear transformer (non switching) wall wart adapters they have. You can tell if they are the switching type (that you don't want) by the weight. They've got to be big and heavy. The small light weight ones are the noisy switching ones that you should avoid. You should get them while you can because I don't think they make the quiet transformer type any more. Too much shipping cost due to the weight.

@@hamrad88 got a setup in my bedroom using a little curio table for antenna elevation using a terk am advantage for am, Using a TLA-500 passive loop for shortwave I picked up from bigapple59 on ebay and a terk edge fm for the fm. It does really good on am and sw. Be careful about ac adapters with this one as some I have had will actually cause the radio to go haywire (the one my seller sent with it for instance)

IMO, the fact that this radio has no auto frequency scan function is it's major flaw. it's a fine receiver but I rarely reach for this radio when I want to do some band scanning .. the Grundig 750, for example, has a very handy scan function.

@@hamrad88 Have you tried a wall wart RFI Noise Filter? It's a ferrite ring that you loop the power cord around closest to the radio end of the plug. If I have noise I might give this a shot. Have you tried one? Might be interesting for you to try it on one of those cheap power supplies that didn't work. Palomar Engineers sells them.
