HamRadio / Hobby Radio WHY Bother ?

I am 35, born in 1989 so brought up in the 90s and mobile phones became the norm in my teenage years but I decided to to get into Amateur radio in 2021 because I love learning and fell in love with the science of radio waves. There's a big gap in tech people use everyday and what they understand about it from mobile phones, radio waves, cars, tools and so much more. I love learning how things work.

I had a handheld CB and I would sit on a hill and talk to people at the local docks.On the big rig I'd get out 20+ miles.Lots of fun.

I loved my cb in the 80's, but love hand held radios more. Just getting into ham and everything about the tech and things to learn, keeping me alert and sane. Suffer from ptsd etc but this is great to have something to study and learn.

Andreas, I worked in IT as a Technical lead sysadmin for 25 years, I have spent thousands on computers, drones, RC helicopters, VR headsets. Because my brain is a sponge for technology and techical hobbies. Many of my peers don't have a clue what I'm talking about. But I never had a football season ticket, or a golf club membership. Long live us geeks. I'll know Im getting old, when I loose my curiosity for how things work......

If the grid went down. We would be reliant on cb/ham radio. It’s also a very essential rescue tool. Such as raynet. Which is run by volunteers.

I absolutely agree with you! It all started for me listening to a old valve radio; on SW I could hear stations from around the world, I remember there was a two pin mains plug with holes connected to the radio just big enough for my finger; didn't do that again! M7FDJ 73s

I’ve been involved in radio since 1978. Am cb radio with a dipole outside my flat window where I lived then It was a midland and I loved the modulation on it Then cb became legal 1981 I was a rig doctor fixing rigs for people I am now a foundation ham and love it I’ve made a good few contacts And I’m on qrz My call sign is M7HIH I have yeasu 450d Mobiles and icom 275 2 meter all mode I have always read practical wireless magazine. But KZbin is a plethora of information about this great hobby 73s

I think it's our memories. We remember fondly the times without internet, we were the modern ones, we decoded RTTY, SlowScan, Weatherfax, Packet and whatnot via the airwaves and printed it out, it was tomorrows news - today. We had CB radios in our cars, drove around the city and met up with others we communicated with, it was a lot more social than behind the keyboards today for sure. So we remember that. Along with that came natural tinkering with electronics. It was a time were you could walk into the nearest electronics store and purchase a handful of components. People do tinker with things today as well, like Arduinos, Raspberry pi's and what have you not. But radio is very niché today. Sure it's in every device, wifi as you mentioned, 2,3,4 and 5G - is just all radio with an entire ecosystem built in, radio, transmitter, modem, cameras, computer etc. All in one handy gadget - people don't give it a second thought that we did in fact pioneer the things they take for granted today. If it wasn't for our tinkering, they would not even have it.

My wife says I'm turning into an old man by wanting to listen to the airways, she said I'll be train spotting next😂 As you said it's something that's interesting it's not just talking to someone over the airways which I can't do due to not having a Ham License, but some of the appeal is the gadgets that you can get now, things like Hackrf that allows you to experiment within the guidelines of course.

Remember the Summerset Wallies. Mike the pipe layer etc. I'm a ham MW0HRD. I still have my Hy-Gain V from my youth and yes it works great showing its age but I will never sell this radio it started my fascination years ago

I have had some of the best Radios and sold them at a loss. But its a hobby. I could go out every weekend and drink 6 pints. Its what you choose to spend your money on, if you get enjoyment from it then ots never a bad thing.

I'm only starting been a few times to my local club and a now mate was telling me he did foundation then went straight into intimate then straight on to full and he was getting stressed with studying then he said he had to tell himself it's a hobby if I fail so what I can always redo it

The internet is great, but only when it works. Lately it has been disconnecting on me. Radio, you switch it on & it does not need to be online for it to work.
