You can get mobile equivalent power out of an HT if you have a good beam antenna. Check out the Arrow antennas made here in Cheyenne, Wyoming There is also the Elk antenna or make a tape measure antenna.... I used my 4 element 2m arrow antenna up in the Sierra once from down below a ridge to get into a repeater well down in the Sacramento Valley. The positive about a beam is not only do you get the gain on transmit, but you'll also get it on receive making it better than just a mobile with power. From a high ridge in the eastern foothills I used the 5 element 70cm beam to get into bay area repeaters like I was local with just an HT all the way across the Sacramento Valley (used to live in NorCal before relocating to Wyoming).

@@jturning It seems like a pain to operate a beam antenna while hiking, but I have never tried. An omni(ish) antenna with higher power would allow operating while on the move, no need to deploy and aim an antenna. A beam may be nice when I am at a campsite and not trying to get somewhere.

Just a few of the comments you made here helped me program mine. I know this isn't a programming video..but just some freeze-frames gave me clues about some of the information in the screens enough to figure this out more. I think I have APRS working now too..still new to the world of DMR however so that's kind of still a programming mystery.

The promiscuous mode can be set from the CPS to one of the keys as an ON/OFF toggle. APRS via DMR works fine. I don't think I'm close to an Igate/APRS repeater to get APRS working. This is the same radio as the Retevis RT73 as far as I can tell - Jason please perform a quick test and press the keypad (DTMF) keys. Do you hear DTMF tones? My guess is no. So, there is no way to issue repeater controls with this rig (I.e link/unlink, some messaging, Echolink, IRLP, etc are not going to work) Even switching some DMR enabled repeaters will fail if connecting to them in analog mode and then trying to go into DMR. I liked the RT73 but been waiting too long for Rertevis to fix DTMF - now prefer the Anytone AT-D878UVII plus HT as my "mobile" in the car and HT outside.

Hi Jason, KYD CDR300UV does have APRS and GPS and 300k contact, same thing for R73, and this DB-25-D is just the same radio with their own branded name on it. By the way KYD is the Manufacturer for CDR300, RT-73 and DB-25-D, they all come out the same mold. They all have same features. On my CDR300 i had the 300k contact update in late April along with basic dAPRS. I did my first dAPRS testing in mid April thru a BM repeater. So no mather from which company you buy it it will to all the same thing. And Firmware are interchangeable so far. I have tested all Retevis FW on my Kyd and i soon as i see one from Radioddity i will try.
@HamRadio2
@HamRadio2 3 жыл бұрын
Radioddity is the one who updated all of those features and now the other 2 have copied them. And like I have said before, getting support from KYD and Retevis is challenging while Radioddity provides excellent support. Also dAPRS I don't really care about, any DMR radio with GPS can do that. I was more interested in the analog side so that the radio could communicate with iGates.

Retevis and Radioddity have just relabled the Kydera CDR-300UV as their own (Kydera manufactures the radio). Like Jefferey Fritz. I've had the Retevis RT73 version of this radio since January 2021, there is also the Kydera CDR-300 version to.. The RT73 has had a lot of teething issues since released. A firmware update had APRS on DMR added back around March from memory, the latest firmware update last month included APRS on Analog and upped the DMR Contacts from 200,000 to 300,000 contacts. Will be interesting to see how this Radio compares to the RT73 and Kydera CDR-300.

@@HamRadio2 Yep, many have parted ownership with both radios due to the bugs and the CPS. I will admit, I think I've been lucky. I've had minimal issues with my RT73, and have only updated the firmware once since purchasing. APRS isn't supported on our VKDMR Network, and I've never had the facilities or need to use APRS to date. The RT73 was a good little DMR Radio under AUS$300 to get into Mobile DMR, but its the only Mobile DMR Radio I've owned, so I am considering purchasing a Alinco DR-MD500T to see the comparisons.

Thanks for the review Jason! What's your impression on the front panel controls particularly the scroll wheel - does that work well? I had 2 Baofeng / B-Tech mobiles where if you turned the wheel even at a medium speed it would either go the wrong way or stutter back and forth without progressing. That made it almost impossible to turn the scroll wheel to change presets. It would frequently go the reverse direction 1 or 2 slots instead of forward.

Sure it can be hooked up to a battery. Any radio can. Their website doesn't list voltage requirements, but typically radios are designed for 13.8V, +/- 15%. This radio is small, and nice and light too (just 2lbs), so paired with a lightweight LiFePO4 battery it would be good for backpacking. When they make it back to the d74 from the digipeater it decodes it. however it just won't decode it directly. I think maybe the modulation is off because the d74 has worked with everything I have tried it with. I reached out to retevis to see if they can fix it. they had me do some things but it still doesn't work right. I wonder if you have tried the aprs beacon on this radioddity one to see how it decodes with other radios like the d74

I really think this radio is JUNK, I have been programming radios for both Commercial and Ham Radio services since 2003. Mainly the Commercial radios and Repeater system and networking. But when I just got this radio today, I could not get the radio to talk to my computer on Windows 11, the Prolific 2303 was no longer going to work with windows. So, I had to force a fix in windows for it to work, once working it read the radio fine and yes, I got right to the programing the DMR. Wow this radio is a nightmare to program, had a hard time getting DMR to work and the group list set right. The Analogue part of the radio work much quickly than DMR as it had different Technetics in the way the program is set up. Al my last gripe about the little Radio is that it come with DTMF, but the DTMF will not work at all. I tried everything to command my repeater and it would not at all send DTMF tones and that is a deal breaker for me, I'm sending it back to Amazon.

Not sure, it has been made for several companies. The first release was the Kydera model, which had lots of bugs in the firmware. When Radioddity got ahold of it, they made lots of changes and updates to it, which Retevis has now copied to their model that has been out for 8-9 months.

Just seems like such an oddball form factor. Too big to serve as an HT, and no internal battery makes it less than ideal for hiking. It isn't powerful enough to compete with standard mobile radios, and it's too big to go where you'd install just a faceplate. I see it more as a novelty radio.
@HamRadio2
@HamRadio2 3 жыл бұрын
Not real sure why you would want to take a radio like this hiking anyway. When I go hiking, I don't want to use DMR or FM only, I was SSB, even if it is only on 2M. This would be great for a g-box or a motorcycle. In my area there are lots of DMR repeaters and 20w is plenty to hit them all. Or lots of people just use hotspots, so you don't need lots of power to talk into those.

You are both right and wrong. NO it is not a re-brand, it is a FIXED model that removes the bugs that Kydera and Retevis didn't fix.
