I really like the sound on my 7300. I do wish the speakers were facing forward instead of being on the top of the radio especially since to he speakers are tilted away from you when the radio is on it's stand. Try putting your hand behind one of the speakers reflecting the sound back towards you and you will see what I mean. Thanks for sharing.

I've used a two dollar white plastic PVC elbow. Plop it down on the speaker and angle it any which way you desire.

Just putting my hand behind one of the speakers made a huge difference. You have a great idea.

I own the 7300 and although I didn't own any other HF-set, I have to say I love it. The filtering options are great. Only filtering function that I don't understand so far is the NB (noise blanker), whatever the settings are, I can't seem to hear a difference - not even with some nice headphones. It also might be that I can't figure out the best settings, which was my reason to check out this video. And it's a pity the speaker is on top rather than on the front, but as I listen mainly using headphones that's not a big deal in my case. 73 de PC4AD

The NB (noise blanker) is for blocking static from automobile ignition systems if mobile, household appliances etc. as opposed to general RF static. So unless you have these types of static nearby the NB will have no noticeable difference. I love my IC-7300 too!

Good video Tom! Keep in mind you have audio bass and treble EQ settings available under "Settings/Tone Control" that can be individually assigned to SSB, AM, FM, CW, RTTY for both RX and TX. I backed my RX bass down to -2 and raised my treble to +1 and am pleased. I got my IC-7300 a couple of months ago and absolutely love it! This is my first SDR and like you said, there are better models available but at a MUCH higher cost. I have been a HAM 25 years, have owned many radios and I find the IC-7300 to be perfect for my needs, desk space and budget.

@ Ron C - Take the plunge and treat yourself to the IC-7300. Like Tom said, they are now selling for under $1000! I had been considering one for months and just couldn't resist the lower price and bought one. I am glad I did. It is a straight forward, easy-to-navigate SDR that is a joy to operate!

I own the IC-7300 for 1 year already. Most of listening/monitoring is with IEMs/earphones. If we set Filter1's bandwidth to 3600 *for SSB), then you able to hear deeper bass/low frequency., and work best for listening to ESSB QSOs. The built-in speaker is just good enough for normal typical SSB QSO, but, to enjoy the full audio spectrum, just get ap pair of headphones, earphones or IEMs. or use external speaker.. If you connect the IC-7300 to PC, try to record the audio stream.. and we also can TX recorded sound or any audio files on air.. Very convinient. and useful. To improve listening, use RF gain (RFG), and typically I set around 9-9:30 o'clock. The S meter reading will be reduced, but, if you can hear clearly, it is most probably 59+. Then use twin PBT , to focus the audio signal The another trick is to use, Fast AGC. Usually I use slow when listening to broadcast station, and fast Fast AGC for SSB. Thank you, and looking forward for your next videos.. Yours, Bahathir 9W2GNU, 73.

Great comment. I knew there was a way to record inside the radio, but I wanted a real-world listening experience for people that open up the radio and start listening. I will look into recording from the 7300.

@@hamradiocq Iam using Raspberry Pi 3 B+ (RPi) and Raspberian Linux. It does not limited to RPi only. I also use GNU/LInux Slackware on my Thinkpad T61 laptop. I think the concept is similar with other operating system. Make sure, all needed drivers are installed. Connect the IC-7300 to your PC/Laptop .. or smarphones! .. :) Start recordng apps, and select the 'capture" device assigned to the IC-7300. In my GNU/Linux environment, I am using ffmpeg, commandline program. As the default, IC-7300's USB output mod level is at 50%, and it is quite low. I changed it to 90%., to get better audio signal level. YOu may use the audio recording's level to set proper signal level. Then start recording... :) Enjouy.. To play back to IC-7300: Select the playback device to IC-7300's assigned device. You may enable the IC-7300's monitoring., to make sure the sound is going out, from PC/Laptop to the rig. Start playback ... and push PTT to transmit the audio.. :) or push/toggle the 'Transmit' button on the rig.. For TX the playback audio, I am using bash shell script, which will trigger the PTT using rigctl tool from hamlib, and toggle back the TX after the playback is finished. Hope this is useful. Any corrections and comments are welcomed. Thank you. Yours, Bahathir 9W2GNU, 73.

Im debating this radio and the kenwood 590sg, lots of comparison between the two...some say the 590sg has slightly less problems with noise interference , I like the layout of the 590s with all the buttons on front ....however the scope on the icom looks nice but wondering if it's too small to be useful, I like to operate in the dark so may go with computer rig control with either...hard choice

Connect a Bose SoundLink speaker (3.5mm) jack to the Phones on the Front of the Radio and see what a difference in RX audio you hear. Great range of Low-mid-high's.... for $150 you get the sound you'll want on receive. For Transmit use a Heil ICm Eletret mic which drives the radio just like the great hand mic. Dynamic mics won't drive the radio as nicely and are better suited if you're using outboard PreAmp/EQ/Processing. The Heil Headsets provide for great audio and better still a much cheaper Yamaha CM500 is a fabulous alternate choice. I've owned a 7300 for 4.5yrs and have done a ton of testing. Enjoy!

When i 1st got my 7300 the 1st thing i noticed was the HISS of the received compared to my 590SG and 891. The yaesu is way better DSP and NR. The WMR CLRDSP really improved the RX listening of my 7300, just remember to turn off the NR before you play with the CLRDSP, it way better than the 590SG and far less watery effect.

I just bought this radio and can not wait to hook my g5rv to it I am sure that i will most likly need to mod the G5RV to a 4/1 Bulan on the end because of the high swr on it I have heard of people putting as high as 9/1 I love the Antenna tunner kind of disappointed you have to be 3/1 or lower for it to work unless you use emergency mode then you can make it work 10/1 but like i said i am going to put my g5rv up about a quarter wave 32 feet I could put it as high as 50 but I live in Arkansas Tornado ALLY and lightning strong winds and huge hail stones .. I already know i need to put a balun on it or the swr will be threw the roof also it cant be on the ground or that to will give you high swr Well ill let you know sooner or later how my adventures go until then my friend 73 KG5CUO Ps a good co wax will go a long ways at least 75 foot they say can help it so i will prob use both to bring down the swr The antenna tunner is nice to will get one sooner or later but for now I have to go with what i got and it only helps it at the radio you lose a lot of output if you do not fix it where the antenna uses it mine is 110 foot or 55 on each side it may be less then that if i can get better use with a blan its a plus if i need to i will add a higher one i will go 4/1 then prob 8/1 if i still have issues this should let the antenna use the power it is given equal i hope on both sides and i will still need a tunner i think because it is cut for 160
