Struggled for _days_ to master the two manuals. Put your video on repeat and cycled it three or four times and got the hang the rig in about 30 minutes! Got 90% of the necessary functions into my head enough so I can deal with the sublties. Thank you very much!

This was great. I'm back after 30 yrs into Ham and just picked up a new 891. I looked at the manual yesterday and it was just not clicking for me, but your video was very good as an introduction and to give an idea of the capabilities without having to decipher the language in the manual. I'll probably watch this several times...LOL Kudos!

I have had mine for not quite 3 years. You covered some stuff that I had no idea it would do. Had to send mine back to Yaesu. Acted like the T/R switch went bad. Would be fine right after turning it on but in a few minutes it was just like you unhooked the antenna. Still under warranty though (but just barely!) so all good. It's a great radio. I'm like you...I think the DNR is my favorite feature. Yaesu has really got the DNR figured out. 73

Since we’re talking the FT-891 I thought I’d chime in as I own this radio as well as its competition in radios. Same mechanical carcass as the ft-857d with a larger screen(a plus). Inner workings are completely new minus a 2m/440 radio section. Nice sensitive receiver, good full 100w output and TX audio EQ and DSP leveraged from other recent Yaesu radios. It has nice filter adjust-ability like the Yaesu’s big brother radios. No filters needed. Includes a stable TCXO that’s adjustable from the menu to set spot on with WWV. You can make your own remote cable out of six wire cable and six pin RJ connectors for pennies (convenient). That’s about it. Now for the bad and clunky. If you don’t like menus……stay away from this radio! Clunky and non-intuitive. Have you ever heard of a ham radio where you want to adjust the mic gain or set the processor levels and not have access to the meter while doing so? Well here it is. You’re in the menu staring at adjustments and have to adjust in the blind….really bad so you’re in and out of the menus to get things set. Also, changing bands or modes and many of the basic settings are wiped clean for you to reset upon return. You will want an external speaker. Like the FT-857d its stock speaker is a tin can. The noise blanker while adjustable is feeble and does not work all that well for auto electrical noise. This is a big deal for a mobile radio. I’ve run my IC-7300 and IC-7000 as well as a couple Uniden CB radios that have much better NB’s than the 891 in same said vehicle. But then again…it’s under 600 bucks and if your a finite deep menu tweaker you'll be happy. Honestly, and from experience, if you can find a nice IC-7000 with the remote cable kit (it also has removable face) you’d have a much better rig with 2m/440 operation…..and I am a Yaesu fan. Used IC-7000’s are almost in the same price range at the time this was written as a new 891. My two cents….73’s

Got my 891 set up and running well. I only have it hooked up to a 20m Hamstick on a tripod and counterpoise. This will change to an MFJ multi-band screwdriver. My biggest complaint is the constant S5/S7 noise level. I don't know the source of this noise but it makes listening almost impossible. if the screwdriver is no better, I'll have move it to an outside location. I'd move it temporarily into my Jeep but the oppressive AZ heat right now wouldn't make it enjoyable.

I just got a Kenwood TM-D710GA for my mobile only because I also got the TH-D74A, when I first got my license couple years back, I got the icom ID-51A but never really used it, after 2 years hiatus, got the itch to ham again and some time to spare and trying to learn all I have not done yet so, I like this radio too after watching this video, by the way, me being new ham you clarified lots of stuff by just explaining the menu, so I will hold you responsible if I end up getting one, :) right now Ham City has them for $650.00. I think it makes a real nice entrance radio to play with Fusion but then I am confuse which one to install in my van; I am about to install the TM-D70GA and the extra power cable I am using is good to power a Yaesu Radio. The power cable and rack under seat for Radio are the only permanent installs so i think i can use both Radios. You got me hooked, sort of!

Hello ! I have a question regarding the radios abilities to retain certain basic settings when saving a frequency to a regular memory channel. This radio does not save settings like receive width, shift or contour when you go from band to band. With each band change these settings are defaulted back to yaesu starting points. I E ; the rx width always goes back to 2.4 KC wide etc... So, I'm wondering if you could try the following experiment. In vfo mode go to 40 meters , say 7.280 lab. Set the RX width to 3khz wide. Set the shift to say, 1180 and set the contour to a mid setting. Write the settings down ... Now save that 40 meter frequency to a regular memory channel. Now go to another band on vfo. Turn radio off. Turn radio back on . Go to that saved memory channel. Then check the values of the settings we saved with that memory channel. Rx width , shift and contour. Did they default to something other than what was saved with that channel ? Or did it save everything you set ? Thanks

Thanks for posting this little tutorial. I purchased this radio a few days ago, and I am starting to get familiar with it. I'm definitely going to read through the parts of the manual I need to look at, but this was an excellent 10,000-foot overview to get started. I did notice that the menu options for output power are a bit confusing. You have "HF Power" and "HF SSB Power". What is the difference?? The only things I don't like about this radio off the bat are that everything, especially more used functions, is buried deep in the settings menu. Also, I like how the "A-B-C" buttons on the FT-857 could be scrolled through to get other functions. Still, I am definitely looking forward to years of faithful service out in the field with this radio. I was going to get an FT-818 instead, but who wants a radio based on 20 y/o technology, no DSP, and very minor tweaks from the FT-817?

pikeymic LSB isn’t used on the 10 Meter band, and the radio defaults to an AUTO sideband. There’s a menu in there to hard-code the BFO for any given node. But we really only need it for certain digital modes that “buck” the normal LSB/USB rules

The Digital Sound Processing (DNR) is really good in high noise situations. For the price, I think this radio is a steal! It is pretty good quality and even easy to MARS CAP mod it! @@hamradiocq That is my complaint with Yaesu. From radio to radio like the FTM100, 400 and FT2DR that I own there is a difference between menu itemsfrom Yaesu radio to Yaesu radio vs. other brand radios and their different models. Speaker on the FT-891 is better than the speaker in the IC-7100. I like the microphone connection on the controller head of the IC-7100 vs the body of the radio on the Yeasu. I also like having 2m and 70cm on the Icom along with Dstar capabilities on all bands. I wish Yaesu had the FT-991a in a mobile package with a remote control head. One negative about the Icom is the noisy fan that must be a piece of crap Chinese computer fan that was spec'd by some bean counter...the same bean counter that left the body mounting bracket out of the box of the IC-7100.

Ham Radio CQ Yes I went on the yaesu website and downloaded the manual. It’s 3.5mm = 1/8. When all else fails read the manual.

It’s green when squelch is broken. You have to first change the RF gain knob to Squelch by going to menu 05-05

Hi. I own a yaesu ft 891 as well. One question. I have a sound that comes from the loudspeaker when from VFO click the key B (SCP) and also key A. This happens with the squelch open. Is this right or there is something wrong. If you have time please let me know. Thank you very much.

Ha! Well, I owned a Yaesu 897 for about 10 years as my first radio so I'm familiar with Yaesu and their menu insanity. The 897 was quite a cinder block but I loved it. This 891 is way easier to use, easier to see much smaller. So far I LOVE this radio. I plan on portable operations this coming weekend on a trip. All I've had time to do is late at night look at the manual and play with the menu no antenna attached. I made this video because it's exactly the video I would WANT to see myself. "Just show me where the basic stuff is!"

When I was looking at this radio at Dayton for the first time (there is a video of it in my Hamvention video) I walked up and the guy hit the lock and I was trying to change the frequency and I didn't even know how to unlock it. I felt stupid like, how the h*** do I change the frequency?

When IPO is toggled ON, the pre-amp on the receiver is turned OFF. So the IPO should actually be on for most HF work.

The 891 has the most jacked up menu system of all time. They hid the power output, the SWR not the PO should be default meter seeing how the radio has no tuner and that’s kind of important. They are too memory heavy and not user adjustable on the buttons. Over 45? Bring glasses! The good, mine puts out a good bit over 100 watts. The squelch/noise cut knob is nice. Picks up a weak signal like a charm. Notch filter is good for cheap radio as is the blanker. Mic works very good. But really the scope is kind of a joke. And if you want a live scope display the sound cuts off. WTH? Can’t multitask? I can see where someone just learning the radio would get lost and screw up the world, that’s why the reset is easily found. But overall for 650, it is tough to beat IMO.
