Josh - Watching this from "the far flung future." I really appreciate the archived content that still is relevant, like this FTM-400 review. I've waited 3+ years, and recent holiday Black Friday discounts have made purchase a bit easier on the wallet. Truly appreciate learning a lot of new hobby knowledge - APRS and WiresX with your help!

It's almost a year and a half after this video was recorded and Yaesu did do an update of the GPS, but it's still a fantastic radio. Mine is only 2 weeks old and I'm really enjoying it. I have a FT-3 handheld and it was easy to move to the FTM-400, an older radio. I bypassed the FTM-300 because of the small screen size and my very old eyes. What's amazing is everything Josh notes is still world class 16 months later. I am all Mac based here so I use RT-Systems for both the 400 and FT-3 and use an SD card to move the data to both radios. And it took me 2 minutes to move my memory channel list from the FT-3 to the 400 using copy and paste between the two RT-Systems software programs. Thanks Josh for an old, but so current review!

Hi Josh, I bought one of the FTM-400XDR here in New Zealand, I must say I really like it. It has a lot of features that I'll never use, but it does the basics well. I do like the touch-screen, this is the first radio I've ever had that has one. Thanks for the video, 73, ZL3XD.

New subscriber here with notifications on. Another feature I have run into is that you use a aux cord and plug it into an aux jack (car stereo, PC speaker) you get audio from bank A on the left speaker and bank B on the right. Handy for Skywarn and other features eg; Police and Fire/rescue. 73' de WX8SJC.

I hear you on this one, right.... I like the size the screen. Looks like a really cool radio. I like the idea of putting it under the seat. I didn't want to mess up my new Honda lol by screwing in brackets. It does it all. I like that. Price point, ok little higher than the 8900.. yeah i know, i hear ya. But seems worth it for the screen size and all the extras. 👍 on this one!

I love my FTM-400XDR... Haven't played with the WIRES-X function yet. Had difficulties using Yaesu's software, but RT Systems works great, especially when paired with RFinder. The only thing I don't like is not being able to program memories to be digital only -- when you receive an analog signal on a Fusion repeater, it will switch to analog... next time you key up it uses analog instead of digital. Most of the Fusion repeaters around here are in dual analog/digital mode, so whichever mode they rx on the input, is what they tx on the output.

@Hax0rZ1
@Hax0rZ1 5 жыл бұрын
Personally I'm not a fan of d-star. In our area we have a ton of fusion repeaters. Between the hot spots and the fusion repeaters depending on where you are you could be in good shape. There is also DMR. I'm not happy with the proprietary nature of d-star and the major difficulty to transcode from other modes due to it. All other modes dont have this problem. Icom and Kenwood actually pay royalties for that AMBE. To me that flies in the face of open source and keeping ham radio free. See this for the chip i'm referring to www.dvsinc.com/products/a20x0.shtml

I ordered mine the last weekend through GigaParts, who had a 10% Labor Day sale. I went with the 400xdr, FSV Voice card, and extra mounting bracket so I can use in my semi as well. Also got the smb-201 cooling fan for the 8800 that its replacing as I'll be using it in the shack with a j-pole. I didn't realize the 400xdr uses the exact power cable, mic, and mounting bracket as the 8800. I wouldn't have needed the other 2 power cords and extra mounting bracket. Oh well, extra stuff for the go bag! I had the rigs swapped out in under 2 minutes, excited!!!

As usual a fabulous video. I bought the ftm-400xdr a few months before you did Hosh and found the same results. I used the same Lido mount and had the same difficulties. They actually make a lido face mount that specifically fits the 400 but I found out after I already bought the wrong one. To get that one to fit I actually had to buy a large washer so it wouldnt slip off the mount. I did run into a defect on my radio that HRO is gladly swapping me a new one when it comes in. My internal speaker which I dont use much now anyways because I have an external speaker died less then a month after I bought it. My next purchase is a FT-991a. Do you own it and can you review it if you do? :)

Thanks Josh for this great review on the 400. Do you have a review on the FTM 300? I’m a new Ham looking to start my shack and go kit with my emphasis/interest on EmComm, ARES =& RACES. My plan is to have my mobile go kit encompass both my VHF/UHF and HF radios and this would serve as my shack radios as well. Could you recommend a yaesu HF (if I should stay with Yaesu) and can you recommend what antennas I should use for a shack and ARES mobile. Thanks for what you do!

What I don't understand is how hard it would have been for Yaesu to allow squelch and volume to be controlled from the mic. When driving band, volume, squelch is what I change. Not going to be smashing all those buttons menus. My 25 year old FT-8500 has all those controls on the mic very much ahead of its time. I'm trying to get into digital. Guess I'll have to wait a few more years. Good comments Thanks. 73

Love my two FTM 400s but I'll share my personal cons about it, much of which could be improved via firmware but it seems yaesu doesn't listen to the community well to write firmware interface improvements It misses some points. The when APRS is set to band B, the APRS enabled icon shows up on band A. APRS notifications blank out receive audio, so do auto/smart beacon transmits. APRS tones aren't as subtle or adjustable as other radios, and APRS busy area will drive you nuts. Programming doesn't allow mode (fm/DN/etc) to be set with a memory. Channel groups isn't an option for scanning specific channels easily. When lcd display brightness is set to a comfortable low level for night driving, the buttons dim out too far to see, button backlight level is not equal of display. Auto brightness mode would have been killer useful. Cross-band repeat does not support digital modes whatsoever nor did they ever advertise it to, though. Other than that, the radio has been great. I love it otherwise these gripes. My previous Kenwood d710 had far better design and function of what cons I posted here. Disclaimer, I may not have dug deep enough to find solutions to these issues.

Hello that radio I really liked the only thing that I would add is several memories for the operation of APRS via Satellite, for example comparing it with the TM710, it has several "PM" memories or menus that simplify when you are driving on fast roads the programmed PATH change is The only thing I would add, I repeat the radio is very nice but its menu a bit complicated, greetings from XE3ISS 73S

the only thing I dont like about it is it lacks a near feature function . MAKE THAT GPS useful instead of tracking your trail ride. I wouldve of thought by now they'd add the feature but sadly no. I wish I had bought the ICOM 5100.

300 is cheaper, but the 400 is touch screen. It's up to you. The 300 can do digital on both VFO A & B, but as a 400 owner myself, I usually leave VFO B on APRS, and use the VFO A for communications on repeaters. If your area is digitally saturated, maybe this will be valuable to you. Also, the touch screen makes entering names and such much easier, as well as APRS messages, if that's your thing.
