With GREAT hesitancy, I tried this mod. It works great, Thank You! I used a very pointy soldering iron and an Xacto knife and the chip came off in a few moments without issue. There was one "Oh, SITH!" moment when I tried to reimport my freqs from the SD card when I got an ERROR message and could not get my settings back. The fix was very simple. All you need to do is reformat the SD while it is in the radio, move the SD card back to your computer and redownload the settings, put the SD card back in the radio. The SD card was then read by the radio without issue.

Just got done with this mod on my ftm400. Works great. I used a sharp point soldering iron and tweezers. I then programmed the radio manually with 100+memories gmrs, murs, itinerant business band, all seems to work as normal. Yes I do have gmrs, business and ham licenses thanks for asking.

The RX is what it is, and to open the TX beyond that wouldn't be easy. You'll run into trouble with the circuits inside the radio being designed to work within a certain bandwidth. Hope this helps.

have a question on after doing a factory reset, when transmitting on a repeater and unkey, i can not hear the person on the other side of the conversation. but when i switch from main band to sub band i can hear the repeater. repeater requires no tone. no problem on simplex. other functions seem to work.

HI it almost sounds like the ENC/DEC is on. I've seen that happen before but I can't remember exactly what it was. My memory is going to the enc/dec or something to do with that..

I haven't lost the auto offset on mine. I don't use many of the features and functions on this radio, so I have noticed no ill effects at all. But that doesn't mean there isn't something missing that I haven't noticed. But I can say, the auto offset was not affected. Best bet is not to ruin the component that has to be removed, and try to preserve it in case you do have to put it back.

hi , i'm ham. During an alignment of the FTM 400 radio in the TX power alignment parameter of the service manual, started as per procedure from 440.050 Mhz low power and 5.3 watts, I continued up to medium power 20W. By storing the 5.3 watt parameter in the Adj 02 PWR menu with the Adj 02 DVR parameter with 9AH in low power and the medium power parameter Adj 02 PWR with 20W and confirmed with Adj 02 DVR with B0H. When I reached high power (50 watts), while I was rotating the dial to align the 50 watts, the Wattmeter with the built-in laboratory dummy load burned out. Now I don't have a tool to align and verify all 3 parameters, especially the high power one which stopped at E1A when the wattmeter burned out. On VHF I obviously didn't continue to set anything. Can you tell me the alphanumeric codes (e.g. 55H 92H E1a etc which are factory set in the respective power parameters 5 - 20 - 50 watts in UHF in the service menu? I would like to set it with those factory values since I don't have a Watt rf instrument from measure at the moment.

sir on 2m band i know the radio put s 5w out on low power. is there a way or adjustments to reduce it to 1w for an indoor low power application as its to much ? regards

Yes, absolutely. You have to enter alignment mode. The procedure is in the Technical manual under "TX Power Adjustment". I have to caution you that you can ruin your radio if you accidentally adjust any of the other parameters other than the TX power. The manual can be downloaded on mods.dk under FTM-400XD technical supplement.. I hope this helps .. 🙂

I'm not sure you can. This radio was intended to be a ham radio originally. There are repeater tones that you can program in, but I don't think that's the same thing. I could be wrong though.

removed the transistor but nothing changed I've reset to factory defaults thru the menu and reloaded the settings from my SD card nothing changed here, can't TX outside the band. I wonder if there is something to do with the firmware or the region? (I bought 400XDE and not XDR)

@@JLPicard440 yes I did, but... And this the big but, I got 400XDE, the European version. I found out tonight that there is a different resistor to remove, so I had it removed too :D It works now, loaded memory back and all is fine.

Sadly mine is in a diff config, removing this just made mine think it was in Asia, and lost auto repeater functions.. so I put it back. Can't find any info on how to do it for a UK/ EU model. FTM 400 DR/DE Any advise would be welcomed.

Hi, I opened up radio to do this mod, to find already missing the resistor. I did a factory reset and still when key Mike it says “ERROR TX FREQ”. What is the problem please.

I'm not sure on that one.. Did the Error TX frequency error come up before the mod? Does that Error only come up outside the ham band? Or within the ham band too? Are you trying to TX outside the frequency range of the mod? I don't remember the range.. it's like 136-174MHZ or something like that..

It will RX on the aircraft band, but not TX. It will RX on AM in that freq range.

If I remember right there's something in the menu that is for wide or narrow RX. If the narrow RX is selected it won't tune to the aircraft band. I don't remember exactly where it is, but I do remember seeing it.

I was excited for some reason thinking this mod would open 1.25m 😅 silly me. Still can’t figure out why my vx6 is triband but finding a new model mobile/base station with 3 of the more popular tech allowable bands is damn impossible. Oh well.

They didn't build into the radio the matching circuits needed to TX on 1.25. It would have cost more.. it can RX without having to do that... :-)

Me too, that’s the only thing I wanted to unlock. I don’t understand why they couldn’t have built this radio with 220mhz transmit capability. I guess I’m just going to have to keep running a 220 radio in my car as well🤬. I was hoping this would work to unlock 220 I’d like to only need one vhf/uhf radio in the car. It receives quite well on 1.25 meters and simply by including a second antenna port and the correct electronics this could have been a lot better radio. Oh well we can’t have everything we want I guess.

It would have been interesting to see what happened to the power output and the receive sensitivity after this mod, actually after any ham radio mod.

Ive never noticed any ill effects to the receive, but TX will diminish once you leave the frequency range the radio was designed for. That's why I never try to TX with full power once I leave that range. The radio will develop a high internal SWR which could damage the radio.

HI Manuel... I can't answer that for sure. The EU version could be different. If you can google the version and see if anything comes up for it and compare to what I did. It may be a matter of removing extra parts or different parts than I did.

Japan market radios are firmware locked, you can do what ever mod you like and they stay locked, thats on all new radios that have been out for the last 5 years or so..

I did this mod and it worked. I was really nervous but took my time a planned it out. After I finished I plugged my radio back up and I couldn't load channels back into my radio from my PC or a SD card! I read some comments here before I did the mod and I knew there were reports that this effected the radios memory programing. Also, my Lat/Long, gps, and clock page were gone! I was freaking out. After watching a RT systems video it turns out that after modifying the radio you have to upload the radios info to RT systems on your PC then download the memory channels you want. Also, you can set the radios features in the software so the lat/long and other missing features came back without having to be turned on manually. Hope this helps someone.

I really thought I just ruined my radio, and am freaking out a bit. I haven't had time to really trouble shoot it yet, because I'm at work right now. @@JLPicard440 Well it was pretty nerve wracking, because it really seemed like it was malfunctioning, but I figured it out. Here's what happened, so if anyone else has this issue, hopefully they will read this and not go through all the anxiety that I did. So I did the mod, put the radio back together, and... It didn't work right. Wouldn't change freqs, and the volume levels were frozen. OMFG, I just bricked my brand new radio. I did a factory reset. Those malfunctions went away and the radio performed normally as if it were reset, everything blanked out. Tried to reload my memories and settings using the SD card. It just kept saying "ERROR" and wouldn't download anything. Final solution was to format the SD card with the radio again, and then export EVERYTHING to the SD card from the radio. (apparently this is where the important data from the modification would get transferred into the SD card.). Then go to RT systems, and import everything from the SD card to a new, blank, file. Then go to your old file with all your memory channels and copy and paste them into that new file you just made. Save that file, and export it to the SD card. Then go back to the radio, and import ALL from the SD card. (It wouldn't let me do just "memory). Step 9:. Watch in amazement as the radio reboots with all the memories intact, and is not actually ruined. Just editing to say, the important part is, you have to copy all the new radio settings to a blank file in RT systems. Then paste all the channels and stuff into that blank file. If you just keep trying to load that original file you saved before you modded the radio, it will never work. you just have to copy and paste all the info from it into the new blank file you exported from the newly modified radio. It's 2:00 in the morning, I hope I'm making sense. But it works. and if this helps just one person not go through what I just did for the last 2 days, I'll be happy.

Have you found a good antenna that works good on 2m, 70cm, and the gmrs frequencys?

Finding one that works well on the GMRS will be an issue since it's 20MHZ away from it's intended use. I don't think the antenna would be quite that broad banded. I would recommend low power only on that band since you'll likely have an SWR issue to think about...

It's not perfect, but I do pretty well with a dual-band Signal Stick mag mounted to my trunk. Receive is great, tx is slightly noisier than a dedicated gmrs but works pretty well for daily stuff. Maybe keep a second gmrs in the car and swap out if you're really needing that function to work at its cleanest. (Definitely remember the power limits imposed on the gmrs/frs channels too)

OK I did it, was easy but now my radio won't read from the SD card. I had it all backed up. Took the same SD card to another FTM-400 and it works fine. Any ideas?

I am not familiar with that. I have heard this from some, and some had no problems. You might try to reset the radio back to factory default if you don't already have a bunch of stuff programmed into it. I've not had any trouble with mine.

I think some models come with some restrictions on the RX, but I think the US version is already opened up. (don't quote me on that). It depends on which version you have.

It would be a fantastic Transceiver if it was possible to choose the TX setting suitable for legal 446 PMR DPMR , rather than having to modify the rig. I wanted a Transceiver that I could replace my Ham and DPMR in one mobile unit. Instead I have to install a DPMR transceiver too just in case of an emergency . 🤦🏼 I carry a handheld transceiver & often communicate with the passengers sat in the car waiting whilst I’m rece a location. They can’t reply via the FTM 400 because it doesn’t allow TX on any 446 channels.

Great video. Does this radio do DMR type 1&2? What is the info on the air solder tool.

Thanks for the comment... I did a search thru the owners manual,.. I didn't see a listing for DMR.. the solder tool is a vivohome 2 in 1 898D .. I'll post a link to it in the description

No, it does not do DMR. It only does C4FM.

Will not do DMR, P25, or D-Star. But will do C4FM Fusion. It will receive all of the frequencies that DMR operates on, but won't decode that mode of operation.

@@joedidit3233 Do you mean after the mod? I'm not having any problem with mine. I thought D-Star was Icom only and DMR was an EU version of Digital? I could be wrong..

No, I just meant in general, before and after the mod. That the radio doesn't decode DMR even though it receives the signal.

I'm not sure there is a MARS mod for this band. But if there is, then yes, this is the mod.

I did this mod and it worked, but with that bein said I also lost two of the GPS functions on the display list. Alt and gps sat info..

Nice to know. But it is too easy to screw up and accidentally transmit with your call sign. As a new ham I got a Yaesu ft-8100 used. Programmed already by local ham. He set up some memories for monitoring EMS. Since the radio was set with an "a" and "b" sides, Id' listen to EMS on "b" side and sometimes forget to switch back to "a" side when I went to transmit. Thankfully it wouldn't transmit out of ham band. I'd suggest not to do this mod. Not sure the practical reason to do this when weighing the issues with getting recorded in an out of band screw up. You can't take your call-sign back after transmitting it.
