It has a bunch of sweet features, missing on a lot of similarly priced budget 10 meter radios, plus a hidden secret or two.

I recently installed one of these radios in my truck and I have been very impressed with it. Just using a browning 49 inch whip trimmed down to 45 in for 10m. I have been getting contacts from all over. Got from Oklahoma to Brazil as my first contact. East coast to west coast of the USA no issues. Fun stuff!

FYI - don't forget It's a 12m radio also. :) And try setting the RXNR (DSP Noise Reduction) to 1 or 2 - it works amazingly well! I have a heap of 10m radios and this is by far the most impressive performer of the lot (my test bench agrees too). 73

Great video . These radios are making other manufacturers take notice . Very good sounding radio right out of the box . Very professional looking rig A huge amount of radio for the money . (P.S. ,, when properly tuned and aligned , these things sound amazing and really perform on 11 meter AM and SSB as well) 73’s KK4ISW

My first rig was a 10m rig. A good old radio shack htx 10. Does everything that your one does except ctss and only 25 watts of power. I had it mounted in the car for years using a chopped down cb antenna. Lots of dx contacts during the summer months. It’s totally worth getting a 10m rig, lots of fun mobile and handy in the shack when hooked up to its own antenna.

You mentioned this radio does not have any connections to connect to a computer or laptop to use WSJTX, but you can use a laptop microphone and a headphone. Couple the headphone to the radio mic, and the laptop mic next to the radio speaker. Then enable VOX mode on the radio. PRO: Works great with any radio/no connections or adapters needed. Con: must have a silent environment to prevent unintentional transmissions.

Great radios. I would recommend getting the heat transfer paste re Done on the heatsink and the audio chip heatsink. As the factory blob in the middle is worthless. And that why they get hot especially on fm. Also have the meter calibrated as factory standard they stop at 9 and don't read above 9. And finally have the squelch properly set up. As from factory set up it blocks low signals with the noise. Properly set it allows signal to come through but stops the noise level breaking through. Then a great radio becomes an amazing radio. Cheers 73s

I have a quad 6. It works really well, it's currently hooked up to an old Itron 27MHz multi stage aerial which works great right across 10 & 11m. I have had great audio reports come back to me. It isn't without its quirks but once you're aware of how it works it's easy enough to set up how you want. I also don't have CTCSS so accessing some of the repeaters is problematic. The user manual is somewhat useless though. Anyways great video as per usual Hayden and I'll keep an ear out for you in VK3. Cheers

I have the Version 1 of this radio, Ver 1 & 2 are also sold under the French CRC brand. Ver1early units - generally did not have the CTCSS/DCS circuit board, simply sourced one from a UK CB shop & plugged it in, presto - it works perfectly! RF Power on the Version 1 series is factory lower compared to Version 2. The radio you buy today will be a Ver 2. You can program via computer, different frequency channel allotments and set them for one of the designated 'bands' @ 40 max channels per band, for example, I've programmed UK CB channels on one band, Aussie and PNG 27Mhz Marine channels on another, kept one of the bands for the FCC/AUS/EU 40ch allotment, and another set for the New Zealand 26Mhz CBRS. One band I've kept at 26.000Mhz for stuff about purpose, study. Per this video, CB users will also appreciate the CTCSS/DCS function vis reason - whilst squelch and ASQ are all fine and dandy, some CB users might appreciate that ability to program a HOME channel, that won't be disturbed by other radio users breaking through squelch and waking the family and farm at 3am:-) You achieve that quite home life - by activating CTCSS/DCS, (works on FM mode only, by design) - choose one of those CTCSS/DCS Codes and set same for both TX and RX (transmit & receive) on ALL radios your family network will use. Choose then - an UNALLOCATED CB channel:- this means *NOT* Channel 09 (Emergency), Channel 11 (AM/FM Call Ch - Pacific), Channel 19 (US Road Channel), Channel 35 (SSB/LSB Call Channel Earth), nor Channel 38 (US/Nth America SSB/LSB Call Channel). So do avoid sitting on SSB used channels, [and of course, stay off all ham bands, unless you've gained that license]. Outcome; even with the squelch OFF, on your chosen CTCSS/DCS channel of choice, the radios will stay dead silent on that channel alone, no matter how strong a passing signal might be on it, or regardless the received modes of that transmission, *unless* it receives that exact Code you've chosen, only then - will it open up for you to hear the inbound transmission! Increasing numbers of CB's with FM mode will have CTCSS/DCS - even FCC approved items, but do check, as this function is worth having for family life. Note that others not using CTCSS/DCS - will always hear your transmission, as CTCSS/DCS is not radio encryption, CTCSS/DCS simply cuts them out for you. Therefore, keep sensitive personal information off air.

Wow! After the white wire adjustment and pin 2 and 3 was changed from 1 and 2, this radio put out nice with no tinkering with power or software or firmware or anything. Nothing needs to he done, but use. I don't like the mic that comes with it, because of the build or the keys to change channels. It's just in the way. Have a 4 pin conversion cable on the way and I'll use my trusty old Astatic. You can use your ranger or those new Cobra mics are pretty nice

Mower Junkie just reviewed the Radioddity version of this. The biggest problem is that you'll need an adapter for converting to the RJ-style mike plug. Don't know if anyone makes them. Snipping the white wire and moving the jumper enables 11 meters, receive only, just like the old Siltronix 1011(wink, wink). Very handy to check propagation and 25 MHz WWV.

An amateur radio operator brought a Yaesu FT-710aess to me March 2023. He wanted me to check it out for him. He was not getting it to transmit, according to him. I, not being an amateur radio operator, tested the radio on a dummy load. I found nothing wrong with it. However, the owner has never returned for it. The telephone number is disconnected, the email goes unanswered. I have been thinking of taking it out of the box and playing with it. I just feel guilty because it is not mine. There is no rule against listening to it.

That data port is actually just a standard serial port configured into a miniUSB jack. It is used for some mild changing of perimeters. It is not a data communications port. You can put in your callsign on the display, which is fun, if you have one. Though, I am not an amateur radio operator, with a 259 centimetre, vertical whip antenna, (102 inches for Texans and American😁) on the back of an old Jeep, I was able to communicate with Uruguay. Of course, this was on 35 USB. I can not use 10 metres, legally. I am not an amateur radio operator.

Think about it. In the 80s, 90s a dual band uhf/VHF radio was 350.00 A 222, VHF, uhf was 500.00 The parts to make those radios cost 10 dollars All the rest was greed And I thought, now that Baeofeng is in the market these companies will cut their prices. Nope Now that says a lot I would rather not sell a radio I would rather go out of business than to sell at a reasonable amount of money The 900 Uniden scanner costs 30 dollars to make And they pay .48 cents an hour to their workers, no extra for overtime WHY ??!! Because they can And they are greedy If they said we want to make sure we pay every employee 50.00 an hour, so the radio has to cost 900, I WOULD BUY ONE JUST TO SUPPORT THAT TYPE OF CARING but they are the opposite Thank you Baeofeng I look forward to your All band digital phase 2 scanner the BF-2D Retailing for 69.99 That does NXDN, DMR, and phase 2 simulcast digital I will but 10 of them

Hams DO scoff at CB. IF you're wondering WHY, I guess you haven't listened to much CB nonsense lately. Hams actually talk about THINGS. When do CB'ers ever talk about anything of value?

@@RollerCam well….to be honest….all I have ever heard with hammies is “yes signal strength is 5 5 I’m from oakefanokie and my name is Jerry” other guy dittos same info. Then they whiskey xray tango everything and end the conversation with 73 73. I’m not being sarcastic but it’s all I hear. Now there’s ft8. Don’t even HAVE to talk. So if bubba is talking to Billy Joe about his wife’s apple pie……I dunno…..is that trash talking really or just good old folks chatting it up Just my 2 shekels. God bless

Most hams don't scoff at CB, because most were CB'ers for years before they got their ham licenses. Many were, or are and have been CB'ers back since the 1980's or earlier. A large amount of hams still own and operate CB radios. The average 2 meter radio that usually utilizes repeaters will easily match most CB radios in coverage even without repeaters when on 146.520 or other simplex frequencies. They're not scoffing at CB radios, but they do scoff and some operators and operating practices, just as they also criticize some of their own operators on nightime 80 meters.

Almost £400 in the UK on Amazon. For this region, the ft891 is surely a better choice, more power and full HF coverage. That's not to say I don't think this radio is any good, thanks for the detailed review as always!
