Hanauma Bay Adventure | Luckiest Day Ever Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is known world wide for the pristine marine ecosystem and the snorkeling opportunities it offers. It was not always this way. At one time Hanauma Bay's reef and marine life were nearly destroyed. Years of over use from millions of visitors lead to the death of much of the reef and the marine life that called it home. That was until 1990 when the City of Honolulu enacted a plan to restore the bay. Today the number of visitors is limited and the bay is only open during certain days and times to help limit the human impact. The City's plan has worked. The bay is now flourishing with life offer amazing snorkeling opportunities to all who visit.
Hanauma Bay is currently taking reservations for all who wish to visit. Please plan ahead and make a reservation. The park entry fee is $25 and the parking fee is $3. You can make your reservation by clicking here. Anyone who visits the park will be required to watch a brief safety/informational video before heading down to the bay.

How quickly does the parking fill up in the mornings? Before 9am?

I did my video on the go pro max when I was there… been 3 times so far but plan to go more… did you put a waterproof case on your go pro or did you use it as is??

yea we did actually, I prefer the dive housings because of the depths that we go to. the hero 7 by itself is only waterproof to about 30ft

Very nice video! As you mentioned about the two channels to get thru the reef line, what if there were rip currents in both channels? How do you get back safely after going beyond the reef line?

Good question; if you're caught out beyond the channels by strong currents your options are limited... Either power through it, wait for it to calm down, or signal for a rescue (none are ideal) my advice to avoid trouble... 1. Stop by and check with the lifeguards. They're out there everyday and know the waters way better than us. Plus, if something does go wrong they are more likely to notice if they know you're out there. 2. Take a waterproof watch with you and time your return for an "incoming tide" (low tide to high tide) as the tides will typically generate the most consistent currents. look out for strong winds too! 3. Stay near the center channel, this will put you closest to the lifeguards

It's an inflatable dive bouy. Scuba divers and freedivers will often use them to mark thier position for boats. I use this one for travel cause it packs down really small. A few different companies sell the exact same bouy so its best to just google 'inflatable dive bouy' and see what comes up. Youll normally have to rig your own tow line, and if you want it to stay upright, youll often have to attach a weight to the bottom

@@gogorental do you think doing sharks cove is a good place to snorkel? Or is haunama bay better?

We mostly prefer sharks cove cause it gets much deeper and is more exposed to the open ocean. If you really like exploring under the water then sharks cove is probly better. If you want some place shallow with a nice beach where you can be in and out of the water, hanauma bay is probly better

I'm scared of sharks, are there sightings of sharks in the area?

Shark sightings are rare. especially in the shallows on the inside of the reef. The lifeguards would have the most accurate info on that but I would not expect to run into sharks at Hanauma Bay
