@Sarah Joy, just want to thank you very much for this information. Very useful. After experimenting, I've found that you can extend this to other nodes of the arm (wrist, elbow and shoulder). It seems that you hurt yourself in this video because need to extend this relaxation technique to those nodes especially (and increase your muscle mass in general). Would recommend that the bigger the node, the longer the hold (maybe increase by increments of 10 seconds). This can also be extended to the feet/leg. For anyone experimenting, I caution you to be very gentle and let go so that the muscle can unravel by itself. Furthermore, if you have the right amount of muscle in these areas, then they will tend not to get so tense. Bone seems to get tense to make up for a lack of muscle.

Hey thanks for this, much appreciated... I get tension in the tendon connected to my pinkie finger, running all the way down my forearm, from wide stretches on piano. Any particular stretches that could prevent this?

my question is unrelated to this video, which was very helpful by the way. I'm wondering do you use anything to condition the fingerboard? I saw a video here where someone put Vaseline on their fingerboard to keep it in good condition but that doesn't seem right.

I have no idea what that will do. If I ever feel like cello maintenance is required, I just take it to a shop. Safer that way.

About the last one, do you think the fact I have nails to play my instrument might be the reason why I am struggling so much with it (even though I understand it is not an easy one)?

Have you ever had sudden onset tendinitis or something similar from over playing? I recently had thus happen to me. It was probably a couple of things at once, but the 4 hour practice session before bed really set it off.
@sarahjoyrecordings
@sarahjoyrecordings 7 жыл бұрын
I have had trouble before, and it's the worst. It came from over-playing. (8 hours in one day is not doable for me, apparently). I have a tutorial that talks about how to properly soak your arms. That's mostly how I overcame that issue.

Sarah Joy , thank you I will try the hand soaking!
@markandrew6407
@markandrew6407 7 жыл бұрын
so is it the tutorial with the hand soaking, or do you actually soak your entire arm? Its healing quickly, but I def over did it. My forearms were so painful that it woke me up in the middle of the night

+Sarah Joy Well, you have to understand that I do them not for music specifically, but just as part of my rehab, but, I can see how they would be very helpful in playing Guitar, Flute, Clarinet, Drums, Bassoon, Piano (keyboard), Cello or whatever instrument whoever may indulge in, since I've done these all my life, just as a regular stretch, and thinking back to when I was playing Guitar, Drums, Keys, etc. ... yeah, I'm pretty sure it helped. What you're demonstrating is closely related to isometric exercises, which I also do occasionally! I'm back with my physical therapist, and learning more about how to stretch my back properly, but I get to do some regular bicep and tricep work, also! Get some of my upper body strength back, ya know, and I'm doing these because of that! It's difficult with the Carpel Tunnel, though, but then again, so are the exercises for my arm work! :-) Do you think these are good for that as well, or are there other stretches that would be better for CT ?
