Absolutely beautiful work, the painting really was something else ❤ My best friend moved down to Hereford from Liverpool decades ago. They lived on a farm and tried to get involved in the country life of their neighbours. My friend was asked to go on a shoot, and, not wanting to appear like a townie he accepted. They had dogs flushing out the birds, and my mate saw a bird go up and thought he’d pretend to shoot it and miss on purpose. He was such a bad shot, with one pull of the trigger he unfortunately killed the poor bird much to his sorrow. The bird, was a Woodcock…………………. He never went on a shoot again.

Many thanks for your comments, great story about your friend , I don.t think I could go out shooting just for sport. maybe its time I made a new one of these as this sold immediately to a man names Woodcock..!! cheers

Lovely Grahame ! Better add a label that warns of loss if dropped in tall, wild grass due to natural camouflaging. Thanks for sharing🙏 Take care. -Mike😷

There was an American Woodcock in my lane this fall. They are rare these days and very interesting to watch. I carve but haven’t tried painting the pieces yet. Thank you for your example.

What a brilliant end result! Did you just use glue (wood glue I’m guessing?) to fix the head to the stick? It looked like the hole you had carved wasn’t super snug (I may be wrong about that), so wanted to check you hadn’t done anything else. I’ve just made my first attempt (also just released a video about it if you’re interested) so I want to learn some more before my next attempt!!

Hi Grahame, That is astonishing. Were the first layers to give depth to the final layer? I'm speechless, and that doesn't happen often. LOL. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw

Hi Huw, Yes and to give shadows to the top layers, I always start dark and work to light, pleased you liked it, this was a difficult one to paint... Cheers take care.
