I use the clips from Tandy which are not plated steel, but are nickel judging by how easy they are to bend since stainless would be difficult to bend. I simply use an adjustable spot setting chisel and adjust to the staple width. Tandy doesn't sell one, but they're real handy. www.springfieldleather.com/Chisel-Spot-Adjustable
