For someone wanting to try basket weave for the first time I would like to add my experience. I have five different sizes. The first was a big stamp thinking it would be fastest to cover an area. For me it is also the worst at stamping a good consistent line. Even a minor mistake sticks out like a sore thumb and hard to correct. As you know as the pattern starts to grow it becomes a pyramid. I can’t eyeball it to continue the line straight. Instead I take a straight edge and mark the unfinished lines with a a very thin scribe. I may do this several times.

I'm guilty of getting my spacing off somewhat and ending up with slight wave in my basket weave. The more I practice, the better I get. Time and practice is the key,I believe. I really like that last patten you did. I'm going to give it a shot. Thanks

I am a novice at stamping and leather craft, I have a quick and possibly a dumb question. If you are right handed do you hammer with the right or hold the stamp with the right?

I still have trouble keeping the stamp straight once I've left the line, I dont want to draw a line every time. I am using a cheap stamp, I'm hoping the better one I ordered will help.

Hi Joe, every day we exercise following your lessons. We hope to receive the Hermann Oak leather soon to see if we are in the good direction. Next year we will send you our work to see if it's well done. (Honestly I hope before) We can't be there....too far from Switzerland !!

could you do a follow up on keeping stright and in sequence when you have to jump over a design, say you have a flower in the middle and stamping on each side and around it
@joemeling32164 жыл бұрын
Yes, that would make a great video. That can definitely be a bit tricky.
@rocklanderoffroad4 жыл бұрын
@@joemeling3216 yes I seem to have some trouble sometimes getting my stamp to comeback in line, top and bottom when going around something. I try making light impressions across the design but sometimes it can be a big design.

Question for doing cartridge loops - I am using Tandy dye and then resolene sealant. I have found if I leave cartridges in the cartridge loops in a rifle buttstock wrap, where the leather is touching the cartridges turns green - any suggestions for making this not happen?
@joemeling3216 Жыл бұрын
Hmmm sounds like it’s pulling from the metal. Is this putting them in wet and forming or is this after things are all dry?
@jasonherrington2002 Жыл бұрын
@@joemeling3216 this is putting them in once everything is dry - for the wet forming I use snap caps. I did post this a few other places and the consensus seems to be don't leave brass cartridges in long term as the brass will react with the leather. If need to leave in long term get some cartridges with nickel plated brass.
@joemeling3216 Жыл бұрын
@@jasonherrington2002 I’d agree. I think brass and copper will both do that although I don’t have a ton of experience with that in particular. Glad you got it figured out.

How do you maintain, or can you maintain the original size of the pieces you stamp? I cut out several pieces for a wallet but after stamping the outer piece with a weave stamp that piece is now too large to align with the others…
@joemeling32162 жыл бұрын
I tape the back of my leather with clear packing tape prior to wetting and tooling. That will avoid stretch in the leather.
@darkshadowsx5949 Жыл бұрын
careful with double taps. i've accidentally bounced the tool and stamped way crooked hit it twice where i didn't want to..

Joe: I am curious on how you stamp a basket weave into an odd shape. Example: I made a knife sheath. The front is an odd, organic shape. No straight lines. How do you basket stamp to fill it up without damaging the border of the stamping? Stamping with half the stamp? Tilt it. Curious.
@joemeling32163 жыл бұрын
Yes sir you have to tilt it back and/or sideways to not hit the edge. I can try to do a video on that soon
@bbrachman3 жыл бұрын
@@joemeling3216 That would be really helpful. I have found NO videos on basket stamping inside an irregular shape. It would work very well on the front of a knife sheath.
