In this quick tip episode I'll show you how to get double the use out of one 1200 grit power hone wheel so you can both sharpen your graver and get finely polished heels.

I'm an engineer by trade but my first career of over 20 years was as a professional tattoo artist. I recently have found a wonderful hobby that combines both of the things I'm most passionate about....art and metal. Thank you for this amazing channel! There are many amazing artisans in this community! Is there a flow chart anywhere where I could find a GD&T type of blueprints for different styles of gravers and all of their angles? I recently purchased a huge lot of beautiful antique gravers that I restored and they now work beautifully. I am currently taking measurements of what I do have to make blueprints to recreate these for myself but would love to have more.

I just started engraving and your videos have been very useful to me. Could you please make a video explaining all the different types of gravers and their applications. It seems nobody on youtube has made a video on that subject yet. Thanks!

Kaleb Hale for your first year or so you should stick to one or two gravers only. Something like a 90deg or 105deg. I do 90% of my work with a 105 and a 120. As you learn you’ll know if you need a different shape graver by what you are trying to achieve. For instance, if you want a flat bottomed cut, you’ll need a flat graver. It’s as simple as that. At some point I’ll make a video discussing the topic but suffice to say I can cut 99% of the things I want to do with a single 105deg graver. You should think in terms of the shape of cut you want. A gravers purpose is to cut metal. All the different shapes just make different shaped cuts. They don’t have specific uses for the most part. Graver shape and geometry are some of the most asked about topics from beginners and they really are last on the list and have the least amount of importance in learning to engrave. Best of luck!

😟😳😮 going to tune my 1200 lap like this. I have always used ceramic,3M lap stickers and or diamond spray on a leather strap for bright cuts. I know everything has its time and place. But excited to try this.😬

Ethan Donohoe it definitely handy. It polishes well enough for the majority of bright cuts. If I need more I use a hard rubber diamond wheel on the flex shaft.

Loving these videos Layne! Thank you for the sharpening tips and showing your techniques otherwise. Currently I am attempting to refine my push graver technique and am wondering if a 90 or 120 degree point are prefered, and if a slight heel is needed for the point.

@MasterEngraverTV 5 жыл бұрын
When starting out a 120deg graver is far too hard to control in my opinion as a push graver. I wouldn't go higher than a 105 and I usually recommend 90. And as for heel, a graver will not cut properly without one. The only people who ever use a graver without a heel that I know of are those who cut bulino engraving. And that is done with a very tiny specialized graver.

Thank you sir. I will go back to the 90 with a slight heel, and practice, practice...

Have patience. It takes a few years to gain real proficiency with a push graver.

I have a Lindsay classic collet based handpiece and the apex sharpener. The Lindsay collets are a bit shorter than the GRS ones. Have you any experience with the interchangeability of the two collet systems? It seems like getting the same index on the graver in the collet is almost impossible if removed and that the gravers should just live in the collets once installed. Thank you.

On your last apex video I noticed your rougher grit wheels wobble a bit. Does that affect the angle of your graver at all when doing the rough shape?
@MasterEngraverTV
@MasterEngraverTV 5 жыл бұрын
It can yes. I normally take a bit more time to level things out but since i was just cutting the rough facets I didn't worry about it much. When I do the final shaping on the facets I use the second wheel which sits mostly level. Reality is it's time for a new power hone setup with a quick change wheel.

The pain of balancing a workshop budget. :-P This was a great video by the way. I never thought about turning a wheel into, essentially, a double grit stone.

What is "inking your engraving"? Thanks!
@MasterEngraverTV
@MasterEngraverTV 5 жыл бұрын
On high relief engraving, it's common practice to add various types of black enamel paint or ink to the background to give contrast. If the gun is a blued gun this isn't the case.

Thanks! I wondered how engraver got such dark backgrounds on some types of work. I am learning a lot from your videos! Thanks so much for posting them. Bob in Virginia.
