The hex screws will definitely makes the holder unstable and will ofcourse slip when you put some pressure on it, best method is to remove the hex screws and tighten it up while the holder is sitting on the bottom of the vise. Dont forget to use some leather or something in common when you are holding this inside ring holder between the jaws of the vise to prevent and slip that may occur. Metal on metal is just to slippery to practice for example pavé settings.

When putting the holder into the vise, you said to align the holes on the holder with holes on vise. This was a bit unclear. Should I assume that this is imprecise and simply a way to generally balance the holder in the vise? Or am I missing something?

Thanks for the question! It is imprecise. The video is intended to give you a starting point for using the ID Ring Holder (#004-735). He says it kind of quick, but he says to line up the hole on fixture with the center holes on the vise. This allows you to start out centered on the vise, although how you place the fixture in the vise will vary depending on the ring you are working on.
