I did my first wall a few weeks ago, built in situ. I tried to nail it toenail style but I was too clumsy and mistakes were hard to fix so I switched to screws, following your other tutorial. Much more control and I could undo the mistakes. But I like the idea of hand nailing. It is relaxing. I hand nailed the cement sheet on, so at least I got some experience.

Yup, I screwed up the 16" OC on my first shed (12'x12') by not subtracting 3/4". Ended up ripping 3/4" off of the first siding panel. I'm the only one that notices it, but it remains a good reminder.

When nailing at the end of a plate I always start it with the nail aligned with the inside face of the end stud and angle it out so it's not as close to the end of the plate and reduces the chance of the nail splitting the plate. I also rest the frame I'm making on offcuts, so the studs & plates don't rest directly on the ground, to ease the alignment of the joints..

I’ve watched this channel quite a bit. It’s nice to see Vancouver “Carpenter” doing carpentry; I thought, at least from all the videos, he only did drywall. Also as an American, USA, it’s nice to see a Canadian using inches/feet; the world may be metric but the trades are SAE. ;-)

I also love hand nailing nails. We used to nail cut nails into pressure treated lumber into concrete slab, my favorite part of framing. Then back in the day hardware nail guns were expensive for us so my pops made me hand nail them all off. Now we don’t really drive nails anymore besides cuts nails into piers in crawl space foundations.

Man I love framing! Either I use my pneumatic framing Collated nailer or my cordless DeWalt framing nailer or my old Vaughan 27oz California Framer Hammer. Or my old Vaughan 28oz Rig Builder's Axe aka Carpenter's Hatchet. It's all about Hammer Techniques! On my 27oz California Framer and my 28oz Rig Builder's Axe I can drive the 3-1/4" to 3-1/2" common nails in just 1 to 2 hits without bending it. I can also do it too on my other Vaughan 16oz California Framer that is much lighter than its siblings. And I love Vaughan tools The waffle face really helps a lot it grabs the nail pretty good. for the record as a certified Carpenter in the state of Texas. I love using Framing Hammers and rig builder's axe MORE THAN a framing nailer. I know framing nailer is fast but hammer 🔨 is lot more fun to use. Hammer 🔨 is a Sword of a Carpenter.

They have battery powered nail guns now. They work pretty okay but are pricey. Maybe double the cost of the air powered versions, but you don't need a compressor at least and they're very portable. The nails don't have 'full' circular heads on them, so an engineer might make a fuss if they see someone using those on a shearwall's sheathing. But they work great for concrete forming when you're running around all over the place. And who knows, they might make versions with full-headed nail clips. Since they're relatively new on the market I think either the cost will come down or they will get better: Bigger nails, longer battery life, etc...
@adammacer
@adammacer 3 жыл бұрын
21º nailers like Rigid's run collated full-head nails.. don't think 30º can.. I also heard that clipped nail heads don't meet Canadian code anymore..
@randomCADstuff
@randomCADstuff 3 жыл бұрын
@@adammacer Thanks for the info. I see the framing carpenters still using the pneumatic nail guns probably for that very reason. The last set of structural drawings I saw didn't allow the clipped heads (but did allow offset heads). I'm sure there's a battery operated full-head nail gun out there but it'll probably cost upwards of $600 cnd. They seem to break a lot too. I'm also from Vancouver and we don't have the friendliest conditions for tools however. At least not outside of the dryer months.
@randomCADstuff
@randomCADstuff 3 жыл бұрын
@DR PHIL Totally. When I first used the cordless I didn't like it but thought "okay I can work with this". Recently I used a hosed one... it's hard to used the battery powered right after using a pneumatic. But if I don't touch the pneumatic I can live with the battery ones. Edit: But I wouldn't use the battery ones for framing carpentry maybe just formwork and mostly for tacking stuff.
