I've seen a thermal imager also used to locate a parasitic draw. If you're lucky you can find the module that's emitting heat when it should be asleep. 👍

I worked in the Electric Power Industry (Electric Utility) and we used those alot. We were looking for loose/corroded connections on power lines and substations. We could detect them easily from ground level. They are very handy tools, they work on infrared light.

Sweet tool Kenny. Very nice of someone to give that to you. I've read but haven't tried it yet, checking for hard to find parasitic draws can be faster with thermal imagery in that the relay or fuse with continuous current on it is usually warmer than the others. Happy Birthday.

Thermal camera on wheel rotor you first need to hit it with a quick spray of paint, no real issue as to colour, as the shiny metal reflects back the temerature of the environment, not the metal temperature. Biggest use is to run through the fuse box, with all loads on, like lights, AC, fan on high, hazards on, brakes on, defroster on. That then will show up all the hot fuses, and if any have poor contact they will be a lot hotter, so simply remove them, clean the legs with 320 grit water paper, and check the socket, and put back, and it will run cooler again.

There is a UTube video somewhere a guy took his ice-pick test light and bridged it from Neg batt terminal to the engine block and the lamp energized while cranking the engine indicating a weak ground somewhere. He then took his thermal imager focusing on the engine and chassis grounds and sure enough the bad ground terminal lit right up. Have fun with your well deserved new toy.

@Wrenching With Kenny ohms law helps you out. If your connections are loose/corroded it increases the resistance thus increases the current flow thus causing a hot spot.

Thermal camera is also good for checking radiators for clogged cores indicated by cold spots. Sometimes useful hunting for parasitic battery drain with the thermal camera to look for hot modules that are suppose to be asleep during power off. Sometimes fuses will show some heat during parasitic drain during vehicle sleep. Once suspect fuse identified, pull fuse and check for reduction in drain current. Happy Birthday. Good health and best wishes for your future plans. :- )

I would love to have one of these things, but every time I sweep through options I choke at the price. I'd like to have one that has enough resolution and enough close focus capability to use it for board repair. Freestanding ones seem better than those that require an android phone. Versions that allow side by side view of light vs IR would help to identify which component is hot, although parallax can be an issue for close focus. I don't really understand why they are so expensive. SLR cameras that have the IR filter removed for astronomy photography are not much more than a regular SLR camera, and the resolution is far superior. I'd like to see you do another demo of a fuse box, or even better a module board to see how close it can focus.

They are a game changer for the professional mechanic... They still need to come down in price 50% or more for the home gamer to get any value out of them. But, they're really no different than a cheap camera -- just tuned for a different light frequency than visible light. So, eventually, the price will come down.

So I have a 04 avalanche changed rear calipers on it and now my abs kicks in when I press the brake paddle blead the wheels and the abs module with a scan tool what else is there to do plz help
@AT-wl9yq Жыл бұрын
If you just replaced the calipers, you shouldn't have to bleed the abs pump. There may be another issue somewhere else in the braking system. But for now, I'll assume there are no additional problems. To start with, I'm not sure what you did with the scan tool. When its not connected to the vehicle, are you saying that the abs pump turns on just from pushing the brake pedal? If so, something's wrong. The abs module will only activate the pump when the car is moving. It needs the data from the tone wheel sensors. If everything is good up to this point, you can bleed the abs pump with a scan tool. There's 2 ways to do it. The best way is if your scanner has a special service bleed function built in. Just follow the instructions, and run the procedure 3 or 4 times. If not, you can go to the PID section of your scan tool and open and close the valves inside the abs pump manually. But, for this, you have to know what you're doing. Unless you have the workshop manual for the vehicle, and it gives you step by step instructions, that's fine. If you have the exact procedure, then go ahead and do it manually. Everything I just went over assumes you have air trapped in the abs pump, All this is to just move the air past the pump so it can be bled at the calipers. But, like I said before, you shouldn't have to do any of this if you just replaced the calipers. You now need to to check your work for any mistakes. Make sure everything electrical is plugged in, and the connections are good. Follow all the lines to make sure there's no leaks. But the most important thing to check are the 2 calipers you just installed. On some vehicles, you can put the right caliper on the left wheel, and the left caliper on the right wheel, and it will still function. The only problem with that, is the bleeders on the calipers will be pointed down, and they need to be up in order to get all the air out. Aside from that, I can't really tell you anything more until you give me an update on some of the questions I have listed.
