Love songs or Glove songs?! 'The sun shines out of your arse' is a classic british saying meaning someone can do no wrong -- usually sarcastically 'look at 'er, she thinks the sun shines out of 'er arse!'

The Smiths are great, and Morrisey has a pretty great discography on his own, also. For me, this song is Morrisey snidely pouring scorn on some couple, whose self-obsessed worldview is what his lyrics express. They are always 'hand in glove' or inseparable, they are greatly impressed by their own qualities ('the sun shines out of our behinds'), and they think their love is unmatched by what others experience ('we have something they'll never have'). Morrisey is a good observer and has a very sharp tongue, and if you assume that his lyrics are intended to ridicule, belittle or castigate someone, then you won't often be wrong. Also, the band is consistently superb, and over a period of 4 or 5 years, they made a huge impact on pop music, albeit less so in the US. Regarding song selections - 'Panic' is probably their best known song, 'How Soon Is Now' is essential, 'This Charming Man' is the essence of the Smiths sound, and 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' might tickle your fancy...

As others have mentioned, Rourke passed away just a few short days ago. You asked for recommendations and there are too many to list here - The Smiths never recorded a poor track - but a few with fantastic basslines include "Barbarism Begins at Home," "The Headmaster Ritual," "Rubber Ring," and "Well I Wonder." Conversely, Hand in Glove can also be interpreted as conveying Morrissey's devotion to his newfound musical partnership with guitarist Johnny Marr. Together he felt they could accomplish anything, and yes, it was so perfect it surely would never last. Fitting as Marr would effectively dissolve the band just 5 years later.

I always thought the “we can go where ever we please” followed by “and everything depends upon how near you stand to me”. Might’ve been referring to being openly gay in the 80’s? Although I couldn’t tell ya if it was accepted in the UK at that time 🤷🏻 Also the part about “not like any other love… different because it’s us.” And then obviously the part about people staring. Just what came to mind when I first heard it.

Hand in glove means being in close association with another person, sun shines out of our behinds means means you think your very special. The song is about two people in a relationship and a lot of smiths and Morrisseys songs will usually talk of the other person been a male. If you listen again it will make a bit more sense 😊

I never considered any of Morrissey's lyrics as regular love song lyrics - most of them are much more "unrequieted love" songs. And many of them are rather depressing, which should be right up your alley. As a suggestion, though you might already know it, I want to mention 'How Soon Is Now?'.

@@MusicCatsandCoffee it's probably one of those "you know it, when you hear it" songs. If I remember it correctly, some alternative band covered it (late 90's, early 2000's?) and that version was used as a theme for some tv-series. I could be totally wrong though.

This is a guy who tried to kidnap his obsession, but ended sneezing into his chloroform rags and passed out. He awoke to find himself in a basement lol. The drug affected his brain to the point, he sees sunshine coming out from behinds. Now that he is in the basement, he knows he will never see her again. Good old March is here, the month of getting older and entering a new decade of life for me lol. At least the commercialization of bought love month is over! These videos made it all better, another great series!!!!

On their first album they did have a song on a grisly theme, 'Suffer Little Children', about serial killers Brady and Hindley, who terrorised his home city, Manchester, in the sixties, when he himself was a child.
