Most of us might use pneumatic nailers, but every once in a while you’ve got to hand nail something. The danger with this is the possibility of hitting your project, instead of the nail. And hammer kisses aren’t all that attractive. Here’s a dirt simple, dirt cheap way to make certain that you won’t mar your woodworking projects when you’re hand driving a nail.

Didn't some ppl still use nails, why not use a screw?

Most nails are flexible and can bend with the wood movement. Screws are hardened steel and can either snap from the wood movement or restrain it and cause warping.

A screw is more obtrusive in my opinion JIM

Depends on what you want the fastener to do, and what properties you want. Just like you wouldn't use bolts and nuts for every project. Nails can be coated differently, can flex when the wood moves, have different size heads or shapes for different jobs, and also have a stopping point (depending on the head). Screws in softwood (like pine and cedar) are easy to drive deeper than you want, and now you've got an ugly divot in your wood surface, maybe even a split or a hole out the back of a thin piece.
