We live in a time where most of what we purchase has a short and disposable lifespan. Videos like this motivate people to reclaim used materials and gives them a skill at the same time. Love the low brow comedy as well.

Ye I agree. It's amazing as a beginner woodworker how much free GOOD wood I can find in the street thrown out than I can take home, clean, sand and use.

Also... When you're paying 8$ for a crooked 2x4 full of knots, that old nailed up straight 2x4 from '81 looks mighty fine!!

could the time spent weathering but not being able to move also contribute to its lasting straightness?

I didn't know that cut off trick. I like it. I'd describe the failure of the tall nails as buckling (as a structural engineer). The ease of buckling increases with the height^2, so cutting them short is brilliant. I always grab crooked nails with vise grips at about that height and push them through, but this seems easier and safer.

Yeah I'd always une channel locks for pesky nails like this, especially trim nails.

I like the side puller on your big hammer. A side note, if I'm trying to save trim boards, I use a channel locks and pull the nails out the back side. That way your not marring up the face of the trim. Works great.

The galvanized nails are soft as worms. The steel brights are more harder but the rusted steel bright scream like banshees as you pull them out.

You should definitely hold onto the end of the nail that is getting cut off, and be wearing safety glasses. You (and any bystanders) only get one pair of irreplaceable eyes! Otherwise, keep up the great work!

I’ve found the waffle faced hammer type are significantly better to drive nails out in the reverse direction. I have a 24oz estwing with a waffle pattern in the hammer face. It does not let the nail slide when hit. Mine has rarely let me down. I occasionally need to run a small square file across it to reprofile the face.
@chriswest19962 жыл бұрын
I've been a fan of slide hammer nail pullers for most of my life. Crescent makes one.
@bensonyoutuber79442 жыл бұрын
I will de nail a board more often than the average person. Slide hammer nail pullers can often grab a nail after the head is broken. Ring shank nails are generally left in the board.
@libertarian16372 жыл бұрын
If you have a lot to do Porter Cable actually make a de-nail gun; it looks kind of like a nail gun minus the magazine and is made to drive mails out. I’ve used one for a long time in cleaning up pallets. The gun makes fast work of re-using lumber; with lumber prices being what they are/were re-use makes sense as it does just in general as old lumber tends to be much better than new. Crescent also makes nail removal pliers that work great; they’re like 10-12” pliers with a 1/4-3/8 round on it that lets you grip a nail and roll it out head and all. I use it to pull nails from the inside (opposite the head side) and pull nails through the wood head and all; I use this principally on finish nails as it keeps the finish surface pristine, or as pristine as it can be given the nil holes. If you have a lot to do then get the de-nail tool you’ll be amazed at the difference; I bought mine for $100 on Craigslist and have never looked back.
@russell71402 жыл бұрын
We have a cottage in Ontario and there is no taking stuff to the landfill. We try to reuse lumber since it is a pain to travel to town from the remote location and back. We have driven many nails back through the board and I will try the cut off method since that looks like it will be a time saver.
@alanviner37112 жыл бұрын
Bettern yet pull them through, and you don't disturb paint if it was painted. All you need is a pair of rounded tile clippers

Zip disk in an angle grinder....I've done that. Especially if you're going to write off the extraction process and just leave the nail in the board. Using it for concrete forming lumber for example.

With the high price of lumber every board is worth saving.

Working labour in my teens, I used to put a block beside the nails to help pull them out. All other nails I couldn’t pull out, I’d bash them in so deep nobody would ever see them again.
@kingforaday87252 жыл бұрын
Nice tips! Another good reason (at least for me) is the price of new wood!!! Its still crazy expensive! If width and thickness were not real critical a few passes through a planer and joiner could make it almost new looking!!!

crazy how you pulled out the linesmens pliers, i thought myself how to use that exact method when i was cleaning a bunch of sheets of 4x8 plywood

Another reason to denail wood is the same reason to save money by reusing anything. When you buy a piece of wood...or anything...you have to spend money. And to have money in your bank account you have to make money. And this is the important part....It costs A LOT of money to make money. Taxes, eating at a diner, gas, rent, electrical and heating bills, living in a relatively expensive rental environment....etc. So when you save money by not buying something, there's a massive multiplier effect.

Those stiletto tools are pretty nice very good looking tools. When we have wall sheeting and roof sheeting on I have to take braces out and I always pull nails out of the boards. I’ve been rocking the Martinez m1 hammer it has a side nail puller like that stiletto. How I pull them out now is I tap the nail until the head barely sticks out then use the side nail puller pretty effortless.
@bantz0012 жыл бұрын

Now that lumber prices increased so much due to Covid, it's more important to recycle. You did that so quickly. I spent hours on mine and never got them out. The claw on my hammer broke off trying to pull those nails. I'll have to buy some new tools. What is that fancy hammer?

A 2x4x12 is $15 here, a 2x12x16 $70. You did two boards (while talking and explaining) in 9 mins. I don't know about you, but my time isn't worth *that* much, plus a run to the store takes some time too.
@dosadoodle2 жыл бұрын
> plus a run to the store takes some time too That's a good callout. It will take more time overall to get to the store, find decent lumber, and drive back home than to just de-nail the boards. But I guess many people are too lazy and would rather sit in their car for 20 minutes, walk around a store for 5 minutes, and pick out decent lumber for 10 minutes than to swing a hammer for 10-15 minutes.

Also pliers are terrible at cutting nails. They’re really only good for wire. After about 20 cuts they’re dull as crap and mostly useless. For cutting nails get a small bolt cutter. Snip and it’s done.

Or maybe the board is in your hardwood floor you just pulled carpet off. I’ve got a nail with no head that is just high enough to catch the bottom of your foot. (And it’s in a doorway so you can’t avoid it). I’ve tried hammering it through, pulling it up…it’s so close to the surface,and has no head, so nothing to grab onto. I had fingers crossed but haven’t seen anything here I haven’t tried. :’(
