someone asked about paper - I am using the thicker "Photo" paper - yields more detail and contrast (use semi-matte, not glossy) and that works fine - and won't wrinkle from humidity in the frame like regular inkjet paper.. I did two prints in case I messed one up, so practice first on one and then if you're pleased, do the final one. Great thing about oil that he brought out is that paper is more forgiving than textured canvas , so if you make a mistake, you can always j wipe it off before it dries, something you couldn't do when painting on canvas.

Beautiful tutorial, I would begin with Harman positive paper...but it is glossy. I thought to try with oil pencils, is it a good idea? Good day from Italy!

For old photo paper the window of correction is a lot longer than printing photo paper. So with oils and old photo paper you could change your mind and/or tone the print all day, but with printing paper you have to use another test piece of paper before and continually through the process. The new paper really absorbs the ink/oils very fast. What really works great is, have your image printed on canvas then paint and/or tone the image all you want. I love this process.Then make a video of that.

Hi Mr. Hager, your video is very informative, thanks. Couple of questions: 1) do you use oils straight from the tube or are they diluted with something? 2) In addition to the Ilford Photo Paper, have you tried Polar Pearl Metallic by Red River? I'm wondering which to purchase. Thanks!

I would love to try this. I have some amazing photos that I would love to hand tint. Would you mind telling what supplies I will need to start?

Make another video about tinting technique (on old photos), can you?

What do you think of using the Marshell's Photo Oils? I just got into hand tinting photos, and I've not used enough paints to form an opinion one way or another, so I'd like to pick the brain of someone who's done it tons.

hello nice work! that is photo paper or drawing? What colors do you use?

Do you use a specific brand of oil paints. I'm an artist and now that different brands are thicker and richer than others and need to be mixed with linseed oil to make them more transparent. Also, did you coat the photograph with anything prior to painting on it. Another artist friend of mine and I created a collaborative piece using one of my photographs. I had it printed on canvas and then she painted onto the canvas. She ended up having to put several coats of varnish on the canvas to avoid having the ink lift when she painted on the photo. The acrylics would just rub the ink off of the canvas. Any suggestions? Another photographer friend of mine want me to attempt oil painting over an image so I'm trying to figure out the best process.

Any recommendations as far as what paper it's printed on?

I'm a professional illustrator but i'm also a full time photoretoucher, My favorite medium is Oil and have worked with it since i was in art school. My question is this, you mentioned using oil for this technique, but oil rots paper after a while, depending on which brand of oil paint you are using, it can even crack and have a yellow tint. have you had any issues with paper rot or any chemical reaction to the photograph?
@jrhager12 жыл бұрын
Thanks for stopping by. Yes, photo paper, the old fashioned Ilford photo paper which is called pearl finish. It is very difficult and tricky to tint (printer photo paper) but it can be done. Hope I helped you out. Let me know.

What kind of and brand oil should I look for. I do n’see when you have talked about the oil paint s.

Marshells are very good, at times I will use the oil pencils. But be careful a big factor is the paper. Old photographic paper is the best, but who has a darkroom these days.
@MrirmaosLeal10 жыл бұрын
With the oil paints, Can I do it in a normal RC Paper's Darkroom Print? (or is just in FB paper?, because i made a little research, and most of people say to do it only in FB paper or to pre-treat RC Paper for the effect)
