I just realized that the problem is not the cyclist knowing the hand signals, it's the drivers and other people knowing what the signals mean 😅

I like the changing lanes strategy of just turning your bike around at the corner. I’m scared to go on the main roads on a bike. Very dangerous in a big city.

The problem with standard hand signals is car drivers don't understand them .. They should be rewritten. Point left to,turn left with left hand and point right to turn right with right hand is the simple and a better solution but as they are now is complicated. No one knows that raising the left hand means a right turn except cyclists and car drivers with broken turn signals .Drivers just think cyclists are waiving hello when raising there left hand . The hand signals in video are counterintuitive and confusing because the person who came up with them didn't think very much about it .

Stick out your arm to the right if you go that way and stick out your leftarm to the left if you go that way. All other signals are nonsence. The road design in the US sucks for bicyclists. Look how we Dutch do it. Way saver, more modern and better. But you have to start somewhere. Just watch some Dutch video's about it.

It's also because it's the same signs as motorcylist where you have one hand on throttle or the clutch. You can also have per say, left hand on the clutch and signalling left with your right arm if your turn signals aren't working. Same can be done in a car, pop your left arm out the window and signal that way.

EXACTLY hold your left hand out if you intend to go left and your right if you want to go right like we do in Germany. Rest is bs.
@factChecker01
@factChecker01 2 жыл бұрын
Only old people over 70 would know what the old right-turn signal meant, and they would immediately guess what you mean when you stick out your right hand. Use your right hand for a right turn.
@TimpBizkit
@TimpBizkit 3 жыл бұрын
I just stick my right arm out for a right turn and left arm out for a left turn. The left arm up is for in a car with a broken indicator, because you can't see the right arm properly as it's inside the car in cars where the driver sits on the left. Remember to go down the gears so motorists don't have to feather the clutch waiting for you to crawl off the line in a hard gear lmao.

@@Sivah_Akash I have never seen this befor in Germany. You always point to side you want to drive to. Its super confusing to signal the other side than where you will go. Never use this in Europe.

@@k1dicarus, agree. But if you grow up in a place using that sign, it isn't confusing. It's clear even from a distance if the hand is extended or at a right angle (agree not as clear as using extended arms for both directions). Also this is especially helpful since the back brakes are on the right side in US.

I just installed wireless LED turn signals on my Ebike on all four corners ! I made brackets for them out of metal. The fronts and mounted to my brake levers so they are night and high up and FAR APART so a vehicle at a distance can tell if it’s a left light it right light blinking. Same with rear signals though they’re mounted closer then the front. One on each side of my bike rack battery. Which is about 6.5 “ wide and each signal light is about 2.5” wide. I have a tail/brake light in between with high power LEDs for brake lights. You can’t miss me stopping!!! Lol

When you use these hand signals, people think that you’re waving to them. What you should do is point your whole arm out, and extend your index finger to point. Use your left hand for turning left, right arm for turning right, and don’t bother signalling slowing down because most people either assume you’ll stop (like you should), or they can see your hands on the brakes.

I suggest a mirror on your bike so they are aware of oncoming cars or trucks and not having to look over their shoulder at the time they need to change direction. Cars have them so the drivers have to look over their shoulder and are aware of the environment surrounding them.. Saves Lives

The person who invented these hand signals made a mistake because nobody knows that raising the left hands means a right turn except for cyclists and people driving cars with broken turn signals. I follow the hand signals for car driver in the handbook, but handsignals just not make other driver see us properly,they focus on your bumper most of the times, unless as a cyclist you take the middle lane when you wanted to turn left,,,all the way to the turn point...if not ,driver just wanted to pass you like nascar driver.

I get that this is the official way. But I don't agree that it's always the safest way. Drivers are extremely inattentive, and I try to give myself an "out". The left turn from the left lane works in perfect world. But I've had drivers pass me from behind as I began to turn.

Best advice ever: ride bikes in bike trails, no cars allowed areas. DO NOT RIDE ON STREETS/ROADS. Too many blind car drivers as evidenced by people not stopping at STOP signs, ref traffic lights, and running over “invisible” pedestrians. Add drunk, drugged up, texting, talking, lower IQ, impatience, ignorant, impertinent drivers as hazards. Then, the “stealth” drivers! No lights when dark, no turn signals EVER, the 10 mph over posted speed limit, etc. After several almost deadly encounters, I gave my bike away!! Pedestrians, be warned!!!
