Excellent restoration as usual. Joe’s shop introduced everyone to the fiber wheel, Scoutcrafter started everyone on the angle grinder and now Magdad will be known for the red label belts. Great history lesson on the tool.👍
@tungsten_carbide3 жыл бұрын
I think you're right about the Red Label belts but Scoutcrafter was hardly the first YT tool restorer to make use of an angle grinder. I think he even says in one of his vids that he was late to the party. And fibre wheels have been in use in machine shops for many years for both deburring and surface dressing. The oldest vid I could find just now on KZbin showing one in use is from 3M themselves, from 11 years ago!
@frankg30723 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input but I don’t follow all the tool restorers on you tube just some so I guess there have been others using the grinder before Scoutcrafter. I may be mistaken but as far as the fiber wheel with Scoutcrafter and Magdad I’m pretty sure they referred to Joe’s shop for they’re starting to use the wheel.

Shellac, then paint? Please advise on this idea..
@issuma82233 жыл бұрын
If the shellac is thinned with alcohol so as to absorb into the wood, it could make a good primer layer, although as someone who has been painting wood for decades, I would venture to say that in this case no primer was needed. Although for the record I can positively state that if you paint wood with shellac, it will never rust, and I think we can all agree that this is a good thing.
@shannonelliott61163 жыл бұрын
@@issuma8223 rusty wood is certainly an issue..😁..thanks for the response!

The prices in those old catalogs always look great until I put it thru the inflation calculator......I've done the same with a vise, only I used little wood pieces instead of nails. A vise has a tremendous amount of force as do clamps that can be used to straighten things.

That was interesting. I can't help but think, though, that a wood handle covered in paint loses its wonderful grippyness. Last year I bought a set of Felo wooden-handle screwdrivers and the first thing I did was scrape off the varnish. Now they're super comfortable in the hand.
@357magdad3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I was trying to match the original satin black finish described in the old Stanley catalogs. I will say that the fluting on the handles does help with grip.
